Hey. All is well?

Me and my feral cat have established clearly defined goals and employ a wide variety of mechanisms to communicate and coordinate our retirement activities across a wide spectrum of hedonism mostly. We have formed a foundation of future success with our suburban neighbors by building a rapport founded on mutual suspicion.

I do wish I had someone from GSO to mow my lawn however. It's in my area for improvement.

In true FS fashion, I can't write my EER to save my life, but I'm pretty good at editing others. So, if anyone wants to pass me their statements for review, I'm happy to offer what little wisdom I have to offer.

Is it admissible to start your EER:

"I'm not eligible for promotion this year, so feel free to just stop here and mid-rank me. But, if you insist or are looking back from a future panel when I am eligible..."

I was just curious.

A panel will only see it when you are eligible for promotion, so write for the panel. Or not!

Don't they still have to review them all? If not, does being ineligible also mean you don't have to worry about being low-ranked?

If you’re not up for review, you can’t be low ranked. The panel has access to your whole packet (not sure if only back to your last promotion) but will only see your packet if you’re up for consideration that year.

I got pretty far in the process one time when I applied on the consular track as a foreign service officer. I've since transitioned to the IT field, but my interest in foreign service still remains. Just curious if there are sort of 'IT track' in the same way there is a consular track, and if so, does anyone have any experience with that?

Question about multiple applications/background check stuff:

So first off, I got pretty far into the application process for DSSA, passed my background check but didn't pass my suitability review. I used to smoke weed quite a bit in college, and a few times after, and the big thing they cited on my denial was that I was a Peace Corps Volunteer and I returned home to America during my service and smoked weed, which broke the "morality contract" or whatever I had signed to enter Peace Corps that said I wouldn't use drugs even out of country. I know that the DSSA background check is significantly more in-depth than other ones, and I do recall seeing several job descriptions that said something like "If you have failed a background check in the past X years you are not eligible to apply (this does not apply to those who did not pass a DSSA background check)". I got the notification I didn't make the cut about a year ago, and I was looking to take the FSOT in October. Will that cause some sort of problems should I make it to another suitability review for the foreign service? I know there is time limits on some stuff.

Second, I took the FSOT last June and passed, but with a really low score and I was still in grad school so I decided not to move forward. I just never turned in my Personal Narratives (or whatever stage two is), so I didn't know if I would be disqualified for some specific amount of time for that.

If you don't do the PN, there's no penalty, it's just the standard "one application per 12 months" waiting period.

If I'm trying to get into consular work, are there particular skill sets or certifications I should go for to help my application if I've only ever worked in the medical field? I'm a pharmD but the career field is imploding due to a variety of reasons and I'd rather get out sooner than later. I went digging around on the consular fellows program website after looking into a listing on USAjobs, but I'm not entirely sure what would help. I've been working on learning Japanese for fun for a while but it wasn't listed on the LTI information that I saw either.

Fred's and Rite Aid getting bought out with mass closures, Walmart had a mass firing in the pharmacy department and restructured to single pharmacist per business day wherever possible, starting salaries are down in retail from ~60/hr to 40 and dropping, further squeezes forecast because pharmacy schools can't slow down pumping people out or they collapse and PBM's aren't disappearing. It's miserable work and it's only going to get worse for the foreseeable future. Rumor mill has Walmart targeting $30-35/hr for new grads within a couple of years, which is unconscionably low for people getting out of 7-8 years of school with $200k in debt and will have to fight for 6 months or more for jobs. I've been stuck for nearly 2 years as a PRN only pharmacist because my big blue company would rather hire new grads they can skin alive than someone who graduated in 2015. So I average between 10-40 hours per month based on how many people need to take a vacation or have to retire because they had a stroke at work and scheduling wouldn't help them find coverage.

I went into it with the advice that it was steady, well paying work that would allow me to do all the things I really cared about that couldn't pay a living. Well, I gave up 10 years of my life for it and it's not even providing that. So while I have this time I want to pursue things that I care about and am interested in for a change.

Edit: An interesting data point is that, traditionally, Retail Rx jobs paid significantly more per hour, partly because of higher demand and partly because the work was considerably more stressful and antagonistic towards labor. When I graduated in 2015 the practice of sign on bonuses and contracts had ended but you could easily expect ~$63/hr or more for retail, and hospital would start ~$52-54/hr. In 2019, hospital pay is still hovering around $50/hr but retail is now at parity at best but the job responsibilities have ballooned and your staffing is going to be even worse.

I had what I thought was an excellent candidacy for courier the last time it was open (like 6-7 years ago?) except I put down that I had limited experience of traveling via cargo ship, as I had only worked on one in port for a month and not actually sailed on it. I was automatically rejected.

So I guess you should put down that you were born on a cargo ship or something, I don't know.
