He’s right on that specific point though; It does look like the original design was a massive loot box farmer for them, and the recent backlash against them has seen it culled from the game, but there was no time to redesign the ecosystem; So we have this weird setup where it creates grindy, Skinner Box-esque busywork, but no longer has the shortcut they were trying to entice you into.

Hotlanta Man's the guy who thought the towers were great at release and thought goons were being whiny babies over it because we don't like our games to be challenging.

Little late on this, but I just discovered that the Ruined Assassin tower is a Group Battle tower for those looking to get the achievement. Despite it saying the guy(s) I matched up with were green connection, this is running really awful. Wish me luck.  Edit: First group of people didn't work out. People just don't have great memories when it comes to MK. Back in the Deadly Alliance days the Krypt had needlessly complicated currencies divided by color and a weird half baked system for gambling them on versus matches and this was long before even horse armor. Long and short is this pointless currency poo poo has a history in the series. So it's not without precedence. Sometimes bad design is just bad design without a nefarious intent underneath.

With all the stories of Krunch Time it does seem likely that towers were rushed, and feels that way. Its a shame because there's some real cool ideas and potential in there, but the way its balanced right now its just a mess that isn't really super fun. Its either trivially easy or impossible, there's no challenge. And they're too annoying to just be funny. They did a decent job patching it to be more reasonable, but the fact they had to shows it was rushed, and most of it still isn't properly tuned and probably never will be, which is a shame. But yeah, its hard to say if any of this was due to some plan to make microtransactions or not. It really, really feels that way sometimes, but it could go either way knowing NRS.

That's so weird considering running like 30 matches would probably level most of your poo poo up halfway through level 2 from 0 anyway. I know like 10 matches is full 0 to 1 last time I swapped Shao Kahn's poo poo and did a klassic tower.

The augments only really seem to make a difference in AI Battle since at most you're getting maybe ~10% more damage with everything slotted, a far cry from Injustice 2's gear system where you could basically become a boss fight of your own. That's fine but it makes you wonder why gear has to be leveled up at all since the benefits are so minor.

The only augments I use for regular play (i.e.: not ai battles) are the ones that give extra souls for fatalities/brutalities. I probably should've gotten that chest that needs 3,000 souls first. I've already done the 10,000 one for the ingredient for Shinnok's amulet, and the 2,000 soul bridge repair that nets you Kabal's Shao Kahn chest, and then found out that the 3,000 chest apparently gives you an easy way to farm souls. Otherwise, I've unlocked everything else in the krypt apart from a couple of soul chests that are behind doors that need skeleton keys (I don't have any, I guess I need to reset chests and hope the RNG gives me some more?) In short, I'm an idiot and made the whole thing harder than it needed to be. Oh, and I also didn't realise you could run in the krypt, which made that corridor with the whirling blades incredibly frustrating - it's doable; there's a little spot about 1/3rd of the way in that you can reach where the blades don't hit you, then you can get to the end if you time it exactly right. But yes, I'm dumb.

Protip: When matching up on the character select screen, be sure to rapidly hit the confirm and cancel button in quick succession at least 5-6 times. Works especially well for J and K-named fighters.

My second grouping had the guy absolutely destroying Jade all by themselves. They even showed off and did it two more times with two other characters, so I got a few goodies from it. Oh, also, DON'T put it into fullscreen mode until it's your turn. Each player on the sideline has a trio of effects on cooldowns they use to boost the active player, which I didn't realize right away. I suspect that they intended to make pay-to-win microtransactions a big part of the game for a long span of MK11's development, then in the last few months before release someone from WB's Shadow of War team finally said "Listen assholes, this is such a terrible idea, we barely even had microtransactions and people are STILL loving mad at us." So what we see now is the skeletal remains of the cash shop they cut at the last minute.

Only in the last eight or nine years could you say something resembling competent design is even happening, Shaolin Monks being the exception and as good as it was, I think it succeeded in spite of itself. Remember special forces and Mythologies?I just think it's kinda miraculous this series returned, and is improving regularly. It's kinda crazy to watch. That upward trajectory in design quality earns some goodwill in my book.

I have a question about towers of time: I notice that the highest reward is a raiden skin if you get into the top 5%. I got into the top 3% (  ) in the towers of time, and am sitting there. At least right now. (I'm on the Switch version if that matters.)Do I need to MAINTAIN my 5% or greater percentile until the end of the week to claim the rewards? Or is the fact I've hit that percentile GOOD ENOUGH, and even if I drop down to 20% or so, I will still get the rewards? I hope it is the second option, because as fun as that was, I feel incredibly burned out. I did essentially learn how to play Scorpion doing it

Switching from pad to a hrap has upped my input game tremendously, I can finally link cassies b bk, f fp, kneecap from kick flip or Aug kneecap. Before I had to settle for uppercut or Aug f, b, fk. It is so much stupid damage if they don't drop themselves. I've also been having a lot of fun trying out a zoner Cassie with bitchin bubble and kneecap. Scorpion, noob and a couple others force me to drop the zoning act pretty quickly but it's been hilarious against erron black and shuts down Shao khan and aggressive barakas HARD.

Just did a ranked game as Jade against a Cetrion. Took the first two games by hurling ninja stars and sparks all the time every time. Guy switched to Shao Khan for the last game and did nothing but his "you suck" taunt over and over. I won the match, but he won my heart
