exmarx posted:i tried to watch this but couldn't make it through the intros 😔 Overall it was fun, and I think she did well (she even got a dice of inspiration from jeremy), but it was definitely an odd room for her, everyone else was approaching the game much more seriously than she was. She would have had much more fun in the second show of the night, which devolved into giving a demon a makeover to prepare him for a date. The saturday stream that was just the draggos was much more fun (when it wasn't having technical issues anyway), hopefully that gets posted as a video. There was an odd moment at the end, when Shak, who was running the "dragonfriends" twitch account in the chat, posted something at the end that was along the lines of "thanks to wizards of the coast for having us, and ..." that must have triggered the automod because it deleted all of her posts and banned her from the chat. I guess the auto mod must be very tightly tuned; I posted something early on, commenting on how proud i was of them for not laughing at the word "jerkin" and it got triggered for mod review and deleted. Also apparently they're going to start doing weekly streams, starting in June: https://twitter.com/drgnfrnds/status/1129884703920574465 e: also, I finally listened to the latest episode of the podcast and my god it is peak Hing. Accidentally killing two NPCs and going from "guys I swear, it was an accident, I'm trying to be good this time!" to "so it's only 18 more civilians I need to kill to level up?" at breakneck speed was fantastic. Horsey 2 Horse is just a wizard that's been haunting Freezo, who's kinda dead now, since his first murder. Sheesh, get over it. (I'm glad Dave never engaged that story in season 4, because I kinda expect it'll happen eventually, and it'll be real weird)

Hing looks so different without facial hair. Also, note that since they're not Twitch partners, the stream archive will only stick around for five days. Watch it while you can! (Or somebody do a thing where you rip the stream and chuck it on youtube)

This episode loving ruled. Who knew D&D actually had anti-matter rifles? Bushu-D2 is the best and I hope it sticks around for at least a season.

I assumed that was something Hing just hinged up but apparently not: https://www.dndbeyond.com/equipment/antimatter-rifle Also I've apparently been immersed in too much DF-related content this week because I dreamed I met them the other night. I was very weird and they eventually just started ignoring me and ditched when I was in the bathroom. I woke up before I could figure out if they stuck me with the bill. Never meet your heroes I guess

It's amazing how Hing is so hyper-focused on scraping every experience point he can, that he's completely ignorant of how obviously Dave is brushing the rules aside to get Banknote to level 7 ASAP

I sincerely doubt it. I imagine if he hadn't done that then one of the vials would have shattered, or one of the cultists would have thrown one or something like that. Or maybe they just would have spent the next several days guarding a forest!

Dave's proven again and again that he isn't the kind of DM to railroad the party. It really would go against the spirit of the show if he pulled a "You guys succeeded but actually some random thing happens so you have to continue down my plotted path", especially given how effortless the fights were. Bushu-D2 was definitely a convenient out, but if Hing hadn't brought it up, there probably would have been an extremely different outcome.

I do think it's interesting that he put a hard time limit on this one with the whole seven days thing; I wonder if he's going to gently nudge them in the right direction harder than usual this time. I also love that the only reason Hing isn't level 7 is because he forgot he was supposed to do that when he rolled the character so now he's stuck with it

The big giveaway was at the end of Season 3 with the prerecorded song for Johnny PlayStation’s ascendence; it shows they knew in advance what would happen to Johnny. The Season 5 theme seems to have the common problem with incremental evil plans which work in fiction but in RPGs can have the issue of “ok, you stopped the burning gate opening so you win I guess”. It’s good radio, so it’s not really a complaint, but it’s worth bearing in mind.

My point of reference is Put It All On Red, when Philge gambled the party into bankruptcy and Dave took them on a major detour before getting to Freeside. It was pretty obvious that wasn't intended at all, but Dave still sent them to jail and played through an entire jailbreak scenario before putting things back on track. I guess with the time limit and the discrete time markers, the structure of this season functions pretty differently, but I still think that if Dave wanted the forest to light on fire no matter what, he at least wouldn't have made the cultist fight such a pushover.
|
# ? Jun 8, 2019 17:39 |
|
I want to know what would have happened if Philge had bought the casino Edit: as for the cultist fight, that's the thing - it's not really railroading because Dave does a great job of fitting the story beats into what happens. In that case Freezo had already sent his "turret" out before the fight began, so the difficulty of the fight wasn't an issue (and that itself was good because if the DF had lost the fight they would have to explain why the mad cultists didn't kill them or leave them to burn) hyphz fucked around with this message at 18:17 on Jun 8, 2019 |
