Picked up the OG Gouf today. Think I’m gonna try and build something from each show I watch to celebrate it (if I can afford to keep that up). I’ll do the Gouf custom when I finish 08th MS Team. They also had these zaku head kits in a gatcha machine in GameStop. The machine was broken so I got to just pick which one I wanted and I got Char’s Unmature fucked around with this message at 23:24 on May 22, 2019 |

Dom/Rick Dom colors just make everything better, really. Never don't be making things purple as gently caress.

Or just make it purple after the fact

The GNX would look good in EVA colours, it's a very similar design.

Go for it! I've been meaning to get one as the design is cool as poo poo. Maybe I'll give it a go as well if I ever pick one up.

Actually if anyone wants to sell me parts from an MG GN-X, I'm in need of a leg. I primed one leg with the objective of painting it but didn't like how the knee was scraping paint off. I soaked it in brake fluid, which must have done bad poo poo to the knee joint and the clip for the ankle armor - both shattered. I've rescued the parts for the knee joint and am cementing in hopes of that doing the trick but I'm not sure if it'll work. $10 shipped for a leg, anyone?

I'm sure I have the leg somewhere in my parts pile. I can confirm later this evening for you.

You'd be an absolute saint. If there's a leg you can provide, you get to pick which GN-X number decal (1-30), faction (Zeon, AEU, HRL, or Union) , and whether it should be Gaia, Mash, or Ortega's name decal from the Dom waterslides.

Any advice for getting rid of the discolored splotches left by removing pegs?
|
# ? May 23, 2019 18:01 |

Use good nippers (not cheap/blunt ones or sprue cutters), cut close to the sprue (not to the piece), and then use an x-acto knife to gradually shave the remaining sprue bit off. If you still have a visible mark after that, buy sandpaper in a bunch of different grits (something like 1000/1500/2500), then cut it in strips and glue it to popsicle sticks to make home-made files and gently sand the area around the gate mark down to a uniform surface, starting from the 1000 grit sandpaper. There will still be a slightly discoloured area but it will be less noticeable than gate marks, and you can marker, varnish or paint over it. Been doing both of those based off a video I watched but I probably need higher quality equipment. I have good sanding sticks but think the lightest one is getting worn out. I should get a nice hobby knife that’ll slice through plastic. The xacto knife I have isn’t doing the job.

You might just need to change the blade, they get dull pretty fast when cutting through plastic.

Yeah, I normally change my blade every time I start a new kit.

Keep in mind that the best way to remove nipper marks and mold lines is to use the knife backwards; hold it with the sharp end pointed away from you, and drag the edge towards yourself along the part you're shaving down. It's better for the surface you're working on, and happily also means there's less chance you'll be making a field trip to the ER.

Or you can be like me and file every single nub with a metal file

The #24 is basically a surgical version of the Tamiya curved blade, but a better value. The blades are crazy sharp, so EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN YOU PUT THEM ON THE HANDLE. You'll probably use two per HG kit, but for around $6-$8 per 100 blades, it's still a better value. Shave the nub gently down. You might still need to sand a tiny bit but I've done some good stuff with #24 blades.

I thought the blade might be dull but none of the ones that came with my tool set are very sharp. I have to work seemingly too hard to get it through plastic and lose a lot of precision. I was watching a guy in a video just slice through his runners like butter. This is the kit I bought https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07LDVK1DM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_kAW5CbX4T080Q

That sanding pad on the far left (grey/white) is going to be your best friend. Go from coarsest to the finest grit and it should polish up real nice. Best way to attack nubs is not with one cut but many smaller cuts. Imagine that the nub is just a rectangular piece jutting out from the surface, cut from both sides to make it a trapezoid, moving to a triangle, decreasing the shape until you can nick off the final piece nice and flat. The more plastic you take off per cut increases the chance of stress marks. One other trick I found if the fingernail doesn't get rid of the mark is to use the handle of the knife and run that along it with some pressure. That sometimes works.

The flat handle takes a little getting accustomed to but it's fine after a bit. Go easy on your cuts with it - shave, don't slice, and let the movement of the blade do all the working. https://www.ebay.com/itm/100-Scalpel-Blades-24-Surgical-Dental-ENT-Instruments-with-Free-4-Handle/182424660348?hash=item2a795b697c MJP fucked around with this message at 03:38 on May 24, 2019 |

On a related note, what does everyone do with their dulled blades? I feel they're still way too sharp to put in the garbage. I usually bought Xacto packs that had that included dispenser/sharps container and just tossed it.

Whatever packet the blades come in, I mark the orientation then I put them back in the opposite way, then throw that in the trash once it's been fully used.

Unmature posted:Ordered! Thanks! These are the absolute poo poo. You're going to love having nice sharp curved blades. The Tamiya curved blade is still the best, but while those hold their edge way longer than a scalpel blade, there's no beating the price. A 5-pack of Olfa KB4-R blades (what Tamiya rebrands for their curved blade) is something like $5-$7ish. Just take great care with attaching the blades. You shouldn't be using your fingers - pliers will do the trick. Also you can just drop the used ones in a soda can for safe recycling.
