So in practice it’s just a generic slur for anyone who is too friendly to the Soviet system or people. it’s just a 21st century liberal way of saying “commie”, with fewer direct alt-right connotations

It's primarily a leftist thing since its inception in the Communist Party of Great Britain. It's a little weird you're ferreting out pockets of nuance between supporting Stalin and supporting the Soviet invasion of Hungary, or whatever the gently caress your point is supposed to be, but apparently the hard left's propensity to critique other factions of the hard left is totally alien to you. That said, nessin got called a tankie upthread for no real reason, so I can't claim it's never misappropriated, but you know actual bigtime cognitive dissonance fuelled Soviet apologism is thriving in the wild when you see takes like "the Soviet Union was mankind's last hope to save the planet" in the Chernobyl thread.

Alternate value systems that allow us to factor in externalities like the continued existence of a functioning biosphere simply cannot exist under Bourgeois rule. Even if you somehow regulated carbon emissions down to zero (not going well so far, huh?) porky's still going to chase the easy money eventually, most likely overseas. The falling rate of profit dictates it. for capitalism, in any case: if environmentalism is ever profitable (through long-term cost/benefit analysis, technological innovation, and/or government subsidies) then it has no compunction against being environmentally friendly. Thats a fantastic thread (and everytime someone moans about accents or language should be met with that part) but this bit got to me; https://twitter.com/SlavaMalamud/status/1132048262154850304 Because this show has rattled me enough to do the same, and more bizarrely managed to get my normally incurious parents to read around the event and share bits and pieces about how it was received in the UK at the time.

They had poo poo batteries on the show because in real life, the flashlights just died and they had to stumble around in the dark with the counter screaming at them... But that's not very filmable so they added the hand-crank for extra-80's vibe. Some of the nukegoons in the other thread talk about this, but water is a very good insulator. Apparently you can dive into the tank and as long as you don't go into/stick your hand in the wrong place, you can be fine.

During all of this your tongue and tissues in your mouth swell to a point you can't talk, eat, or drink, slowly going blind in both eyes, and numerous cancers going wild on what still remains. In fact, after the symptoms that pop up shortly after being hit (one to six hours after it began) on high radiation doses (above 2 Sv) you get hit by several brutal symptoms that annoy the poo poo out of you, but the symptoms resulting from anything above 3 Sv last only about one or two days. Then there is this super spooky phase of you feeling better which for a good reason is called Walking-Ghost-Phase in which almost all symptoms go away, as the cells died off and got replaced for the moment. However, those cells are no longer capable of cloning themselves as their DNA is completely torn apart, which means if they die, you will start to suffer. For specific symptoms this means after up to 14 days of feeling good and healthy everything starts to falling apart, you lose your hair, you feel tired and sick, massive risk of getting additional infections due to widespread death of leukocytes until you start bleeding everywhere as the cells die off without replacement and you brutally die by bleeding out of every organ and hole your body has. Radiation poisoning is estimated to be 100% deadly from an instant dose of 6 Sv on wards (which means you get hit by this radiation for a brief second and then the radiation drops to 0, which obviously is never the case, they spent hours or days nearby radiation hotspots). At doses this high, even most intensive medical care can only help you with some symptoms, but hardly do anything to save you. Those firemen that worked around the remains of the reactor got hit with immediate radiation of up to 5 Sv or even more and stayed nearby high radiation sources for many hours, causing widespread DNA damage across the body and almost certainly leading to their death. Usually gamma rays mainly target the DNA only and don't cause much damage to the rest of the cell, but the graphite rock that was picked up is estimated to be radiating of up to 20 Gy of instant radiation, which is so ridiculously high that even healthy cells immediately die off and you start bleeding immediately.

For radiation to be high enough to gently caress the batteries, these guys would have got a good toasting too. So it was likely just bad batteries, low charge, or water that did them in.

Then there is this super spooky phase of you feeling better which for a good reason is called Walking-Ghost-Phase in which almost all symptoms go away, as the cells died off and got replaced for the moment. I was reading about Louis Slotin last night, one of the first scientists to die in a radiation accident in 1946. He was demonstrating an experiment with a small amount of plutonium when it went prompt critical and gave him an instantly fatal dose. Because radiation injuries were such a new phenomena no-one really knew what his symptoms would be or if could even be treated. quote:Over the next four days, Slotin suffered an "agonizing sequence of radiation-induced traumas", including severe diarrhea, reduced urine output, swollen hands, erythema, "massive blisters on his hands and forearms", intestinal paralysis, and gangrene. He had internal radiation burns throughout his body, which one medical expert described as a "three-dimensional sunburn." By the seventh day, he was experiencing periods of "mental confusion." His lips turned blue and he was put in an oxygen tent. He ultimately experienced "a total disintegration of bodily functions" and slipped into a coma.[21][22] Slotin died at 11 a.m. on 30 May, in the presence of his parents. The details of the test are what's most terrifying though. It was literally just on a work bench in a lab with people crowding round to see, no kind of safety precautions and the two halves of plutonium that caused the accident were being held apart by a screwdriver. The others in the room only survived because Slotin's body took the full blast.

Realizing now that the KGB agents in the hotel were toasting Legasov because he lied to them. Someone on the last page was asking about the soldier that went with Sitnikov to the roof, I can't find any information as to who that was or if it happened. Mostly likely it is dramatic license and Sitnikov went there by himself. That soldier would have certainly received a fatal dose just being in the vicinity. The next scene of Sitnikov sitting there being yelled at, knowing he was going to die while his bosses call him a liar will haunt me for a long time. I also found it interesting that the coal foreman says "we don't dig up bodies". As far as I know, the only body at the site that had not been recovered (and has not been, nor will it ever be) is Kodemchuk. So I'm assuming that line means that rumors were circulating that there were dozens, or hundreds, or thousands of bodies at the site, which is what western media outlets were reporting. This wiki has some pretty good information on the people involved. This show is extremely accurate compared to many of the first hand accounts. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Individual_involvement_in_the_Chernobyl_disaster
