Speaking of feedback I got into the phase of the game where there's about a dozen dozen coalitions and loads of backstabbing and I honestly have no clue who's at war with who anymore.

I've seen no pop up at all other than the portraits, but if it's some subtle color variation then it may just be invisible to the colorblind. I can't tell apart faction territories at all either, I have no idea who owns what unless I go into the diplomacy screen and select a name to get the outlines.

As Lu Bei, I captured Cao Cao's capital and the child emperor. Cao Cao accepted becoming a vassal of Yuan Shao as a result. Shortly after, Yuan Shao declared war on me. Kong Rong (my good friend), out of nowhere, declared war on the Han Empire, forcing me into a war with him. wat.

I believe that there are colour blind options in the settings. Have you played around with those?

red dudes can drop an assignment to bolster it but a gently caress load and you can do it the moment you take a full commandery, which isn't to hard when you're conquesting forward.

Really keeps that train going.

Yeah that's the window I get. But I need something to tell me which ones are the positive and which are negative. Then again so far it doesn't seem like it actually matters.

In that screenshot, Wei Yan and Sun Ce are highlighted in red along the bottom quarter of their portrait while everyone else is in green. If you're red/green colourblind, then I guess you can't tell the difference.

I can't figure out how to use unit formations as yellow turbans. I have auxiliaries that claim to unlock circle, wedge, turtle, and shield wall but the option never comes up in battle.

I had no problem using them as other factions. Are yellow turbans locked out of good perfect ranged defense?

So when the 3 Kingdoms period actually starts, it looks like military allies don't automatically become one of your rival kingdoms because in my game, Liu Bei (3rd in power) got skipped over for Shi Xie (4th in power) who's stuck all the way down in the very south under Sun Jian (2nd in power).

I think it's based on prestige, rather than power, so if they're close in size, a "weaker" faction might be higher up the king chain because they've built more buildings that grant prestige for having them.

Unrelated: Are repeater crossbows bugged? I was trying to use them for a while and was wondering why they seemed to have so much ammo left over all the time and figured it was just because their short range meant that they didn't get a lot of shots off before the lines joined and they lost an angle of attack, but I tried repositioning them to flank and what seems to happen with them is that they'll fire off one volley, and then get stuck in an animation just clicking their crossbows as if they're shooting, but no projectiles come out.

Not that I can see, no. I've seen text to that effect with the non-yellow turban units of other factions.

Make sure you have your vassals join your wars otherwise there can be big consequences. I had Shu-han confederate 2 of my (large)vassals out of nowhere then all of a sudden shu is 1) completely surrounding me on all sides 2) half of all of china.

I ain't proud of it but I definitely reverted my save to the previous turn and make sure those vassals declared war on Shu to prevent that cause thats nuts.

Has anyone playing Liu Bei managed to get the event they were talking about pre-release where defending Tao Qian from Cao Cao lets you confederate him when he dies? I went and conquered Cao Cao but Tao Ying just took over as usual and sat on my doorstep being neutral and unhelpful. He even had the gall to join a coalition with Cao Cao just before I finally crushed the jerk, so I had to do a totally-not-in-character Liu Bei backstab and conquer him manually.

Also (playing on Hard) I cannot seem to get Gongsun Zan's campaign off the ground past like turn 25 without Yuan Shao flattening me with doomstacks I have no way of matching. This isn't even the vassalization bug, it's just him beelining for my capital with 2 full stacks no matter which of my neighbours I make friends with. Plus I can't even interact with him before he turns up and crushes me so I can't stave it off diplomatically.

I think if I could change one thing right now it would be giving you diplomatic access to other factions more quickly. It's not like Cao Cao doesn't know who Yuan Shao and Gongsun Zan are and where they live so why do I have to wait until I can see them before I can actually talk to them?

You'd think the 1100's was too early for the Aztecs to land in and conquer France, but Medieval 2 made it possible.

I mean, tibetian tribes were raiding chinese outposts like, a decade before the game's start date so including them is relatively reasonable by total war standards

In my Liu Bei game Tao Qian was attacking a han province and just died so the event triggered just 5 turns after the war with Cao Cao started. Reminds me of the Heir of Burgundy nonsense from EU4 where an entire campaign could be derailed from a dude not dropping dead like he is suppose to.

Is it me or Commanders are lame as hell compared to Vanguards? I feel like establishing ranged superiority is pretty easy with a Strategist, plus you also get crossbows and trebuchets; thus, more ranged block doesn't seem worth it compared to a character that can clean house against enemy swarms in chokepoints and boosts shock cavalry, which can usually win cavalry engagements thanks to their spears.

The colour blindness options are under "colour profile" in Interface options - switch to Deuteranopia, Protanopia, or Tritanopia depending on your specific type of colourblindness.

I'm hoping a DLC (one that you can switch on/off) or a mod does this as that was the most boring part of my first campaign. So much so that I managed to carve out a good % of the 'middle' kingdoms to stop myself from dying of boredom.

Kind of wish I'd just defended my starting provinces and worked my way through liu biao down and then back up towards the emperor, but eh, there's always a second campaign.

Did they dial back the tree fading they had in WH2? I know spacebar still does it but in comparison to WH I feel like I can't see poo poo in heavily forested maps. Most of the trunks still remain with the spacebar pressed and there are so many it makes it a pain to navigate.

Our war against free speech cannot end until we silence this bronze beast!

phew finally managed to declare myself emperor as Gongsun Zan so I can play Dong Zhuo

i vassalised a bunch of people then annexed Dong Min who owned basically as much territory as I did and released all my other vassals to prevent them declaring war on me, it actually worked really well and I re-vassalised Kong whatever a few turns later. I'm unstrustworthy but so powerful it doesnt matter much.
Cao Cao has been an oddly staunch ally for the whole game and got passed over for emperor by me and Liu Bei, who went to war with Sun Jian and was my best mate. So I betrayed Liu Bei and he got totally destroyed by Cao Cao and Kong attacking his eastern lands while Sun Jian owned him in the west.

the big challenge has been corruption, but you can get anti-corruption buildings through the yellow admin buildings (though far down the tree) and from the industry cash buildings

the only reason i got that far though was killing Yuan Shao early, i found it really easy to do just by having a single general as bait and a full stack ambushing in front. the AI falls for it literally every single time, whether you get an ambush or not they will attack the 1st stack and any somewhat equal field battle v the AI is a cake-walk
