is I Am a Child of This House any good? It's got pretty high ratings on mangadex but then again so do a lot of absolute garbage trash, so I don't really go by those anymore

You really think someone would do that? Just go on the internet and be a llama?

I like it, but I'm not sure I'd call it particularly good. Protag is theoretically an isekai but outside of it being mentioned in the first chapter doesn't really ever feel like one; she feels more like a kinda dopey young dumb kid instead. It's also what, 34 chapters in and I'm not sure anything has actually happened story-wise outside of protag meeting her family and a couple other people.

there's a lot of good lists of manga in this thread but anyone have any anime in the genre worth checking out in particular? namely stuff that may have flown under the radar, but then again maybe not. didnt really enjoy re:zero, the humor of kono subarashii goes from impeccable comedic timing to "here's the same joke the 100th time". that's really my only experience with the genre.

Those two are usually the two I'd recommend first, unfortunately.

They're less typical examples of the genre, but No Game No Life and Hataraku Maou-Sama/The Devil is a Part Timer both have anime good enough I'd recommend them to people. That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime isn't quite as good imo but is more representative of the genre as a whole if that's what you're looking for.

Log Horizon is pretty slow and has questionable visuals, but it remains the absolute last word in 'building a society on video game logic' isekai.

If you want the actual good poo poo from before the current wave of mediocre webnovel crap, there's always Twelve Kingdoms. Escaflowne may also float your boat, and has a spectacular soundtrack. Finally, if you're willing to brace yourself for the absolute grimmest isekai out there, there's always Now and Then, Here and There.

It's not really like working aside from dealing in food service and being comedic most of the time.

That said, most of the characters are really great and the humor is top notch. The way it lampshades magical bullshit tropes is pretty funny too, like magical power restoration potions in the form of energy drinks

The next chapter was delayed and won't be published until the 30th.

If you jump into the light novel, you'll actually need to go all the way back to the beginning. There is literally twice as much plot in the LN, half the chapters cover a bunch of other characters that also reincarnated in that world. You can skip over the spider chapters, the manga covers them pretty much line for line. The manga is just about to reach the end of volume 3 of the LN, there are two more volumes after that with a 6th being published at the end of July.

You can try going back to the web novel after volume 5, but it gets rough. The plot in the LN deviates from the WN, and those chapters were covered by Turb0 Translation, who didn't do a great job.

Someone mentioned Grimgar, and I might try it if I were you, since your opinions about Re:Zero/Konosuba mean you probably wouldn't like most "typical" isekai stories. Grimgar has a different sort of tone to it. You still might not like it, but there's probably a higher chance of you liking it than stuff like Overlord or the Slime isekai.

Log Horizon isn't really "shounen," but I didn't like it much so I wouldn't exactly recommend it either (though I know a bunch of other people liked it, so YMMV).

I wouldn't change your mind if you're sure, but I'd still recommend giving it a chance. There's almost 50 chapters out, which is halfway through the whole thing since there's 100 total. They've been steady with the updates since January, so I wouldn't be surprised if they finished it.

(Talking about Apotheosis of a Demon.)
So I just finished catching up on a few chapters I'd missed due to the next part of my post, only to find this waiting on the last update:

quote:

Second, I’ll be busy with a job the next few weeks. I might not have time to translate at all until I’m done with that one. It’s going to be a loooong while before the next chapter goes up.
Son of a bitch. I'll just post about it again when (if) they finish it.

The reason I missed seeing that for a couple weeks was because I decided to read two other series which each had a huge backlog. One has already been mentioned here, Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear (Manga). For anyone that likes fluffy stuff, it's fun if a bit loose (The author doesn't really plan ahead, just writing things as they go, sometimes forgetting things or contradicting themself. The manga will probably avoid most of this, so it'll likely be the better read.), give it a read if you haven't.

The other hasn't come up yet, as far as I can see. Reign of the Hunters is a Chinese semi-reincarnation VRMMO WN about Ye Ci. She's known as the #1 Sorceress player in Fate, winning runner up in a Solo PvP tournament but prevented from continuing to the true, prestigious competition due to nobody else wanting to be on a team with her thanks to her reputation as an incredibly callous and selfish player. Out of the game her family and friends have either been chased away, died or willingly cut off contact with her. In the middle of an anguish filled outburst an errant blast of wind blows Ye Ci off the building, with her barely saving herself with the trophy she just won. Deciding her life's meaningless, she lets go and wakes up to a morning sun 10 years earlier as her 18 year old self, just before Fate comes out.

She decides that she's going to keep playing Fate as a professional player, but this time she won't throw away the people that she didn't realize meant the world to her until they were gone. She'll also try and be less selfish and callous in-game, aiming to not repeat the lonely experience she had in her last life. She takes advantage of her nearly encyclopedic knowledge of Fate and starts over, this time as an Elven Hunter thanks to knowledge of a hidden quest that can only be completed by one, as well as the only other player to beat her in the tournament playing one and liking the way they did it. There's a little bit of bug/glitch exploitation, a lot of triggering game events early (sometimes unexpectedly or entirely new ones that didn't happen previously) and just general using ten years of experience playing the game to get a leg up on almost everyone else. She also makes new and old friends and enemies, while learning that some relationships just can't be salvaged.

It's in the more regular part of the fluffy-dark scale, with Ye Ci playing Fate with old friends and making new ones, but also making some powerful enemies that affect her real life with some real consequences, but it doesn't get super dark. I really like that while she's doing a good job of not being a jerk to random players and makes new friends because of that, she's still a solo player at heart and hasn't completely gotten rid of her callous and ruthless side when it comes to the people that wrong her or her friends. There's a couple instances of one of the big issues that plagues serial work, starting an overarching plot point (mainly the Elven Hunter quest here) only to put it on the back burner indefinitely, but it avoids a lot of the rest. Chapters generally flow pretty well with few jarring jumps, there's foreshadowing and events connect and lead together, there is the occasional encounter-of-the-week style arcs, but they usually use known or reoccurring characters and often lead to something else down the line. It also doesn't have any of the usual creepy poo poo, which is a really nice refresher.

It's overall one of the best serial style stories I've read, leading me to stay up way too many hours for a few days in a row. The translator has maintained constant updates since 2017, though they've slowed down from every 2-3 days at the start to roughly once week. The translation quality is passable, certainly readable if occasionally a bit rough. I really recommend it if you like VRMMO and/or fantasy game stuff, and I'd say give it a chance even if you don't.

Chinese players were veterans when it came to games that required much investment in terms of time and money but offered little content to the players.

You are not one of us.
They used to be less gacha, more grindy. It's kind of a thing in a lot of Asian MMOs, not just either China or Korea, though mostly the older ones. Western MMOs weren't immune, they just rarely got to the same level. There'd be one or two aspects that'd be really grindy for example, but Asian MMOs apply that to almost every aspect. Like farming mobs for hours to get one level because there's little or no other way to get experience, and grinding drops to get enough money to buy your next skill and (loosely gacha) game-changing mechanics or equipment being locked behind a ridiculously low droprate. Then there'd be a cash shop to relieve some or all of the grind.

The horrible, exploitative, grindy mobile games of today didn't come from nowhere. They're just the most recent, evolved and streamlined form of yesterday's grindy MMOs with a significantly larger user base now due to the much easier access to the internet and wider reach of advertising.

there's one wn where the mc's sole power is his mastery over a genre of incredibly bad chinese adventure games. apparently these games were notorious for being bullshit, with tons of grinding and hidden conditions that no sane person could ever figure out. for some inexplicable reason, some old lady in a wuxia world independently creates one such game using magic as a wuxia sect entrance test, despite having no knowledge of china or games. so naturally, the mc aces the exam despite not having any particular talents for martial arts or cultivation or whatever.

i don't know if there were more lovely adventure game magical constructs after the first one, because despite how strange the premise was the actual story was deathly dull. i couldn't even tell if it was supposed to be funny or not.

I also picked up Reign of the Hunters. Decided it was over average when the MC was exceedingly proud of using her amazing foreknowledge to gain a skill that allows her to skip NPC dialog.

The main suspension of disbelief is that such a bad and badly managed mmo wouldn't get laughed out of town in international competition.

I try to think about how the design ideas in the sections I've read could work and not completely kill the game on a long term game, such as a) the extra talent points she gets from everything eventually are available as max level rewards, b) the scaling of dungeons changes so that the raid-like design and difficulty of early ones becomes trivial if your 10 levels higher and the players described are trying to get clears at ultra low levels, ect. c) whenever the mc talks about grinding pretending that they are talking about in game days rather then real life days...

But yes, the game described would host some serious bad designs. Anything where it's like 'the drop chance is 1/100,000,000 for this once a day spawning boss' reflects some serious suspension of disbelief how rng works and raises the question of how anyone knows the item drops from the monster. The game also has 3 different death penalties - exp/level loss, gear degrading, and gear dropping. Given how hard the game is described to be no sane player would stick with it after the first time they got PKed by a high level player and lost their weapon or w/e. Also that's how pkers would make money - grouping up on people who are farming gear.

These are minor gripes, I like the core premise and it's stupid fun to think about going back in time and winning the hell out of a stacked game because you know what's going to happen next.

I think horrible VR Chinese WoW is what keeps me reading. The game is fascinating in a trainwreck way. When actual WoW got more casual and user friendly as time went on, in 2050 we will still be doing fetch quests while losing half your current level to ganking, potentially dropping items, and even down level. There is an epic quest only available to the first person who finished a certain quest and only of they have the right class/race combo.

Some ideas are pretty neat. What if all the races in WoW could play together and factions were instead divided by continent? Traveling and crafting for multiple days in game is pretty hilarious though.

I also love how no Devs seem to care that one player is vacuuming up the first blood rewards and finished a dungeon on the highest difficulty before anyone could clear normal.

Poorly designed MMOs are unfortunately the norm. Now and then someone at least captures the feeling of a decent game like Log Horizon, or The King's Avatar (though it's more the esports community scene aspect, as opposed to game design). The worst are always these hilariously unbalanced MMOs that are somehow the most popular in the world.

Log Horizon's game aspect feels very much like an old school MMO, more along the lines of pre-WoW/early-WoW than what it is today. It feels vaguely authentic despite its shortcomings as a game.

A lot of TKA's game Glory is poorly designed. It's supposed to be a first-person Dungeon Fighter Online, down to referencing various moves (renamed and sometimes not) but how people can actually control their characters in the way described with the limited awareness of first-person is hard to believe. But the way people exploit game mechanics to win an open world boss over their rivals, etc. is rather believable. Honestly, the only thing TKA is missing in terms of MMO shenanigans are some hilarious EVE Online things or Age of Wushu shenanigans.

i think my favorite aspect of deeply terrible chinese wn mmo's is how many people everything requires. oh, a simple 2000 man open world boss raid, nbd. no problems could possibly arise from needing to keep that many people online and focused for the same 18 hour period. it make it so obvious that an author has never played a single mmo in their entire life, and their knowledge of the medium is based entirely on other, equally lovely webnovels.
