I was wondering when the first nintendo defender would appear. This thread was surprisingly unified for most of the day! I guess it's that much of a gently caress up this time around Whatever Sony is doing is irrelevant, and who gives a poo poo whether it's "fair" to nintendo or not

I will defend Nintendo in that Super Mario Bros. 3 is worth $20 a year. The bad online is a bonus.

I mean, yes, it would be nice if Sony would be honest and just say that they're pushing back on cross-play because it would give their competitors a leg-up in a race they're winning, but we all know that wouldn't end well and that has nothing to do with Nintendo online services consistently being complete rear end anyway.

I could see an argument for Nintendo getting *more* blowback than the other 3 in certain regards, but that's because Nintendo makes good games people want to play. I'd rather they get yelled at so we get changes, like Mario tennis finally getting online doubles and full sets. Online and Nintendo is the neverending monkeys paw wish. Like, Arms has the best fighting game lobby system created, too bad it forces you to play minigames more than the actual game.

The thing that sucks about this specifically is that in the latest direct they showcased how playing online would look and it looked super fun and by design Mario Maker is one of those games that has a sense of community around it so people automatically started thinking of ways they could design fun levels to play with their (online) friends and then two weeks later Nintendo is like "oh, about that..." I feel like if there was no online multiplayer at all people would be more accepting than whatever this is.

I'm sorry if I come across as a fanboy. Maybe part of me is a fanboy, and I need to stop it. Nintendo's online is the crappiest out of all the companies, and it should be free. I still think MM2 is gonna be great, but the random online is a blemish, and one that needs to be patched. I just think it's dumb to let that be a deciding factor in whether or not to get the game.

Fwiw I'll probably still pick it up, but that's because nintendo hasn't made something I want to play in a good long while now. Good thing ports of old games in portable format make me horny

Based on the scientific process of a quick Google search and no fact-checking whatsoever, Super Mario Bros. 3 adjusted for inflation would cost like $100 today so buying five years of Nintendo Switch Online is equal to buying SMB3 in 1990. Now factor in all the other NES games on there, and you're saving thousands of dollars. Therefore, Nintendo Switch Online is clearly a better deal than Playstation Plus.

I think what is particularly grating about the MM2 online stuff is that there is no reason Nintendo can't let you play with friends. It's not like a technical limitation or a bunch of more work for them, it's ostensibly to protect leader boards which is about the lamest excuse you could come up with.

Pretty sure they actually generate revenue unlike SA They're still garbage but it's not that surprising imo, a lot of lovely blog companies are based out of major metro areas with slick prominent office locations

What even is the leaderboard going to track? Number of wins? That would just come down to whoever has the most time on their hands just like the 100 Mario leaderboards. Who cares?

Make Nintendo make Marios Mario together in Mario Maker.
|
# ? May 29, 2019 01:24 |
Seems like an easy solution for Nintendo would just be to have friends playing together not count for leaderboards, or have it be on a separate leaderboard.

"Nintendo fans, we heard your call and we're going to do our best to provide you with online multiplayer with friends. See you when Super Mario Maker launches June 28. 2021!" I wonder they announced the online thing to soften the blow when we find out the new Pokémon game can't be played docked.
