Oblivions is a new top-10 National track. Good album. I know it’s been influenced by the film (and vise-versa), but this really is if The National wrote a musical and brought in a rotating cast of women for Berninger to have conversations with.

Where is Her Head is the standout for me so far

e: the moment i first heard that stabbing violin in the opening thirty seconds i knew i was in for a fuckin ride

further thoughts: they sort of botched "rylan." changing the chorus' lyrics to eliminate the phrasal repetition and cutting the third chorus out entirely ruins the song's flow to a degree that not even the enhanced percussion can save. the title track is quite nice especially in the last minute, "dust swirls in strange light" is pleasantly strange though i'm not sure how well it'll hold up to repeat listens, "oblivions" is great as mentioned. the two long tracks i'm going to have to settle into and "hey rosey" and "roman holiday" just feel like generic mid-tempo dirges right now, though i like the keyboards on the latter

With a promise that when he comes back next, he will do all the verses.

I was pretty drunk at the time but I'm pretty sure there were three encores? I went outside to smoke after the second one because setlists were all showing two encores and I heard No Children start and bolted back inside

Hell, four even? May have my order of events mixed up, but I think he left the stage after No Children and seemed to surprise the rest of the band by popping back out after 15 seconds to do Heel Turn 2 and four minutes of, I don't know, improv? I've been to their last two shows here and the finale was definitely more energized—he definitely seemed to be enjoying himself.

Most likely not. I loved the last one but it is decidedly low key and this one even more so. It's not my favorite and it's taken longer to grow on me than previous albums but it's still good if you give it time!

So pitchfork compared the use of female vocalists to something Leonard Cohen would do, having them act as response to his lyrics-as-conversation. I nodded when I read it, but loving seriously? the gulf between Cohen as songwriter and Berninger is kind of wide.

Berninger's stuff worked for me because it's a very "self-absorbed dude talking to himself in the shower about what he should have said" style, with which i deeply identify. He's completely overshadowed by the guest vocals, which are across the board pretty good performances from excellent lady singers. But if I wanted to hear them I wouldn't put on a National album for it, sheesh.

My wife walked in midway through the album and straight up did not believe me when I said it was the new National album fwiw

Jenny Lewis was so much better live than I could have possibly imagined. Her albums are good for a Sunday nap, but holy poo poo she really knows how to channel Dolly Parton on stage.

She's a decent actress, although I've never cared for Rilo Kiley. I wish she'd stayed in movies, but I get why she didn't. I'm not surprised she's good on stage.

i've never liked jenny lewis's solo or rilo kiley stuff much at all, but i really liked the nice as gently caress band/album. it was like a lil 3 piece post punk (drums/bass/singing + I think keys on a couple songs?) thing that had extremely on the nose writing

ezra's on tour and they're basically the single best live performer in the whole world and their backing band is amazing, would highly recommend catching a show

It was my first time and I loved it. I am super bummed it was the last one, I want to keep going back to it. :(

So one band caused a fire in the middle of the day. Nothing serious, but totally smoked up a classroom and caused the entire fire alarm system to go off. Most bands played like 2-3 songs through blaring alarms before they made everyone leave the building.

RIP

Last week, a bio page for the band was prematurely posted to the Mom + Pop website and mentioned that the name of the album was The Center Won't Hold.

I'm assuming the unfuckable, unlistenable, unlovable stuff relates to lyrics for the first single "Hurry on Home"

Join my Hold Steady meme group. Anyone want to work on a podcast about them? I know one existed, These Miracles Work, but it was only 5 episodes.

Craig Finn our Ezra Furman on a playlist and I can’t stop listening to Transangelic Exodus. It’s probably one of my favourite albums in years!

Saw The Screaming Females for free, rad show, they were super nice, covered The Angels twice, did tell me Brian Fallon and Patrick Stickles were hard to deal with, gave me a free record.

Anyone know small Melbourne bands, I just moved here because of the indie scene. Every gig I go to we have an earnest conversation about Wil Wagner, him being evil still hurts. Looking for bands like him/Courtney Barnett/general indie punk vibes. Twee pop like early Architecture in Helsinki too. Small local bands I can afford. Already saw Hanny J, Mesa Cosa (who I know pretty well).
