They got hosed due to trying to switch from anti-ship to bombs for a second strike on Midway and then back when the US Navy presence was reported, bombs were not returned to the magazine and left in the hanger, without any protection. Then the carriers were forced to take evasive actions due to the first few strikes that missed that shifted everything around. When the carrier got hit, open fuel and unracked bombs got detonated. Japanese fire and damage control also had issues. A later carrier sinking involved leaking fuel fumes being ignited by a generator on deck when the fumes got spread further by attempts to vent the hanger.

I've seen oscillations like that put fully grown operators in the hospital due to the blood rush to their head. If you're a hoist operator: 1.
