Day two of this:

When I say that there are constant lightning strikes I mean that there is literally a bolt of lightning flashing across the sky every second, for hours on end. It's like a God drat strobe light, and the thunder keeps setting off car alarms. I love it

I know this isn't so impressive by American standards, but this rarely happens here, and the only reason it is happening is because the storm flew over from America with such lingering intensity that it's still remarkable. I can't imagine what it was like at full strength

I’ve never seen that continuously for multiple days, but “hours on end” isn’t that uncommon in the US east of the Rockies.

yeah, it's like an american thunderstorm in august, which is normal there, and not at all here, but it looks like there were some tornadoes here last night too, and more are expected tonight

On average, there is a tornado in this country once every twenty years to fifty years or so

1967:

and of course the tornado of 1674, which hosed up the cathedral

used to look like this:

looks like this now:

since my last post the lighting has turned from blue to purple and the thunder sounds like low-flying airplanes now, p. cool

in dutch it's called a windhoos (which means windhose)

Right before you die to a tornado, the sky will be green and it will sound like you are underneath a freight train.

Keep in mind that you usually need to get to category 3 before you get damage beyond missing shingles and busted windows in even lovely woodframe houses so your not at much risk so long as you don't get lacerated by broken glass

lol yup that's one of the reasons why brickwork is everywhere here; even non-structural brick provides a defensive layer, a house armor

That’s happening here already, there are little frackquakes in the north nearly every day. There was a relatively bad one last week that caused a lot of damage.

This has been going on for years and is caused by fracking. The people there got really sick of it last year and decided to a have good old fashioned torch march to intimidate the government into doing something about it:

https://twitter.com/WelkomGasberaad/status/954433236251369474?s=20

Keep in mind this city/region is the strongest socialist stronghold in the country, and this was organized mostly by environmentalist groups. There have been having increasing number of protests over the last few years and when the quake last week happened the pressure overflowed and now parliament has been forced to finally confront the issue.

This has led to much debate. Yesterday the PM got up to the podium and apologized three times to the people of the region for allowing this to happen, admitting that the situation is a “nightmare” and “a crisis in slow motion.” There are calls for the environmental minister to resign. Not sure what will happen with that

That area (Groningen) is pretty far left and the roots of this can be traced back to the ninth century. The people from there helped out Charlemagne in some important battle, and to reward them he didn’t intact feudalism there, unlike everywhere else in Western Europe, so they lived throughout the Middle Ages as an autonomous collective of peasants with little influence from nobility. At some point they had to build a wall and a moat around the city for defence, but it was difficult because they didn’t have a tradition of forced labor there, so they enticed the townsfolk by offering them free beer and letting them drink as much as they wanted if they would dig the moat. It was finished very quickly.

AFAIK there haven't been any big earthquakes around here for a couple years because the oklahoma legislature decided to pass some bare minimum regulations for wastewater disposal

I love that we were already well on our way destroying the earth with carbon and poo poo but we just also decided to literally cause earthquakes and turn the ground water into methane with something called "fracking."

Humans are such chads owning the virgin earth.

sounds like infrastructure week went well

It was Trump having two meetings: one where he said "let's spend trillions rebuilding our infrastructure" and Pelosi was all "totally agree, gotta work out the deets but basic is good" and then Pelosi said literally something about trump in a press conference and the next meeting trump shows up, screams "YOU HURT MY FEELINGS" and then walked out to the rose garden where the press was already waiting and gave an unhinged press conference screaming "THEY BAD, NOT ME. ME GOOD"

Ironically this was a win for the dems

If the infrastructure rebuilding had gotten passed this would have been something TUMP could have bragged about when campaigning for re-election. Trump just blowing the whole thing with a temper tantrum means the dems don't have to back something that might help the GOP
