The Black Pits - is there any reason to do this content other than shits and giggles? It doesn't have any bearing on the main storyline, does it?

Completely separate and independent from the main game, yes, except for one character in the first Black Pits who appears as a hidden recruitable character in BG1.

Do I need to finish the Black Pits for him to show up in the main campaign or can I safely ignore it? The briefing makes it sound like... Not hugely my cup of tea.

If you have that weird brain thing where you won't use a character editor or cheat codes, but will abuse character import options it means you can start the actual game at whatever level you want to play to.

No, he's just in the game. He's also in The Black Pits.

You don't need to play Black Pits for him to appear, the only requisite is that your character needs to have at least 10k XP. Location Larswood, southern part, near the tower surrounded with gibberlings.

Wait, he's in SOD and they didn't bother to get the actor to record some lines BG2 when they brought him back for that. loving bullshit.

Playing Enhanced Editions on iPad, where I didn’t have access to the console or editors, I speedran a character through BG1 three times to triple up on the stat books. So much Wisdom.

Fuck you say?
Sorcerers are the superior choice, not just canonically (Bhaal's blood is a helluva source to pull power from), not just mechanically (utter devastation will be left in your wake), but because they're far superior than those crusty old wizards who have to practice and learn their spells like a bunch of morons

Personally, I use it as an interactive leveling system. I play through the Black Pits when I want to play BG2 without going through BG1, I play Black Pits 2 when I want to do ToB but don't want to go through BG2. This also lets me try out six different characters and pick which one was the hidden Bhaalspawn at the end of the Pits.

I had a PC that I ran down to the CON tome with until I got 25 before playing through the game once. It seemed like a reasonable idea when I was 12.

The reasonable thing is to run through BG1 enough times to level all stats to 24 in order to take full advantage of Lum the Mad's Machine in BG2.

The unreasonable thing is to preplan for the stats you lose in the dream sequence or by using the Tears in hell and adjust for that. Now THAT'S too much work.

White Line Fever

As a young teen I’d open my 2nd edition hard back books and just read and read. I played a lot less than I wanted to, but inside those books was usually amazing art and creature/place descriptions and I just got lost in it. I had the monstrous compendium, this huge binder filled with card files on every monster. I’d go through them all the time as well. I’d roll character after character just to play with the systems. I had tons of dice in a little suade bag and would often play solo adventures. No one my age really did pen and paper, but I loved it. The point of all that is, when I was 18 Baldurs Gaye came out, and now I could appreciate every nuance of how the game worked. It felt amazing to step out of candlekeep for the first time and see the dice rolls in the dialogue window. All those times spent reading those DnD books and now I was finally able to see on my screen the world in my head. That’s a large part of why I’m very partial to not only the BG games, but 2nd edition.

And while I’m old enough to have played the goldbox games, I had no awareness of them. I was a Nintendo kid so I missed the boat on that as well.

They must have guessed, once or twice - guessed and refused to believe - that everything, always, collectively, had been moving toward that purified shape latent in the sky, that shape of no surprise, no second chance, no return.
Don't get me wrong, I really like 2e as well, partly due to playing the Baldur's Gate games incessantly for the last 20ish years and partly due to recently running OSR stuff that converts 2e/AD&D content over. The systems aren't perfectly designed and contain a lot of janky poo poo, but the presentation and style of 2e captures my imagination in a way later editions and adaptations just can't.

There's a lot of argument over correct game design, and there should always be the drive to building something coherent and mechanically sound, but sometimes a game just manages to foster a positive experience despite 'bad' design, by accident or otherwise.

Decent items is a stretch. It gives you a fair amount of stuff but not if you plan to outfit and equip 5 other party members.

Watchers Keep is a big help but you miss almost all the major items from BG2. Its kind of the point that Cespanar can make epic versions of most weapon types including spears, katanas, and staffs.

Locking you out from Amn when starting ToB was a mistake but I guess back in the 4 CD/Switch your CD Now game days it was an unfortunate necessity.

I remember having to turn an actual key to start my family's computer. I also remember when we upgraded to a computer with 2 separate floppy drives (the 5" 1/4 variety, mind you) because you could copy and write AT THE SAME TIME.

I could tell you all about the awesome DOS games, but more specifically I remember writing a letter to SSI Games about how sad I was that my favorite game came originally in 5" 1/4 floppies and all I had was was 3" 1/2 drives and they sent me the game burned on 3" 1/2 disks and I was the happiest ever.

RPG-related, the first system I played was AD&D and much like the previous grognard(s) above me I spent hours reading the books and making stupid edgy characters (my drow Cavalier fought with 2 bastard swords instead of scimitars, and he frankly wasn't angsty so I'm still ok with that).

First RPG I ever completed was Pool of Radiance on the Commodore 64, I would've been 9-10 at the time :unsmith:

In other news I beat Korgan's quest (holy gently caress, gently caress the undead) with a bit of a shortcut as I went back to the slums to res Minsc and Aerie and stumbled across the final battle of the quest (I hadn't found the next quest trigger yet, which was weird).

Then Anomen's judgement popped up and :laffo: I mistakenly encouraged him to take revenge earlier, and his little tantrum was hilarious. I told him to suck it up and he tried to kill me, so I had to reload!

And strip him of his gear first and then kill him again :hmmyes:

Well, Jaheira kinda covers the same role. Not a lot of Clerical options in BG2.

All you absolutely need divine casters for is Chaotic Commands and the occasional Cure Disease or Free Action.

Which means you can use anyone and having only a lone multiclass Cleric in the party is fine although it will limit that character a bit.

From most to least powerful imo:
Anomen kills poo poo while still fully leveling as a Cleric. Terrible proficiencies but otherwise very strong. Too bad he's dead I guess.
Jaheira is a great tank and wrecks Mages but really suffers from the Druid leveling table. Also from the best Druid spells all being level 5.
Aerie is a decent spell battery. Once you get to the higher levels she has a lot of great tricks but in a full party of 6 she takes too long to get there to be really top tier. Amazing in smaller parties, though.
Viconia is a good safety net due to her magic resistance.
Cernd's kit is laughable. Don't use Cernd unless you really like him as a character. He can still do the support stuff just fine and throw bees at Mages but everything else, ehhh.
