Citations Needed is an absolute 100% required listen IMO, I have been disgustingly online for years and they have still blown my mind about very obvious manipulation that happens right in front of our faces every day. I think we all know that the media is bad and reflects the interests of the right but to have it spelled out in these hour-long blocks is really helpful (and will make you very angry). If you've heard of it but haven't got around to it yet just do it. Also the topic is how the media covers current events, it is not just a current events podcast. I would also throw in Struggle Session because Leslie Lee is an A+ leftist and Jack Allison has a good BS detector but they talk about pop culture mostly so it's fun.

Pretty good tbh because they tend to just let them do their thing. https://thehistoryofbyzantium.com/ Picks up directly from the history of rome podcast, pretty calming narration though a bit dry.

I picked up Citations Needed and Economic Update by Dick Wolves from some recs in TRUMP when i asked a few weeks back and they're good. trillbilly, age of napolean, and war nerd and stuff sounds good so ive added that to Pocketcasts speaking of pocketcasts, what was with that awful update which hosed up the UI. does anyone know a good alternative

Revolutions has been good this series. Ep 2 was a great recap of what a disgusting loser Marx was most of his life, and ep 3 is probably the best short introduction to Marxism I've ever heard. I'm impressed so far.

I thought it was pretty sympathetic to him for having to pack up and move so many times and having his career derailed because of the reactionary rule in Europe post 1848

BENGHAZI 2 posted:the dave anthony version is better West Wing Thing has lovely audio. And while I like both hosts, I think it would be better if one of them was replaced with a Matt or Virgil type. The hosts they've got are both media people with an interest in politics. So when they're criticizing the show as show it's really good, but when they go to politics they can stumble and it turns into the two of them trying to vaguely remember the 90s. If they got a politics wonk with an interest in media, bring that perspective in, it could be really good

I ended up listening to "It Could Happen Here" this week, which is a former Cracked writer trying to predict what a new US civil war would look like. It was fine, but I mostly finished it to figure out what goes on in the mind of a self-described leftist who views the Ukrainian Maidan protesters and Syrian FSA militias as examples to emulate.

Atrocious Joe posted:I ended up listening to "It Could Happen Here" this week, which is a former Cracked writer trying to predict what a new US civil war would look like. he does this other pod called behind the bastards and they just did a 2 parter on assad. his co host is a lib feminist who wants america to get deeper into syria. she supported the US bombing last year and altho she's supposed to be a syria expert she didn't know what the mukhabarat was until midway through part 1 lol they both downplay the genocidal ideology of the "rebels", promote the MS paint journalism of bellingcat, and say obama "overthought" the situation whereas bush would have "at least gone in swinging" in 2011. they also say it's a shame iraq went badly because it scared obama away from invading syria. evans also claims the US provided minimal support to the "good" rebels, completely ignoring that altho it is true the US outsourced much of the arms and jihadi smuggling to regional allies, it's still one of the most expensive regime change efforts in CIA history by now. i have no idea how this man can describe himself as an "anarcho leftist". also i can't stand his smug voice and vocal fry.

Cocaine and Rhinestones Good country music history podcast, currently in development on season 2. Guy is kind of smugly annoying sometimes but still very interesting material Hit Parade Pop music history, really incredible. Guy is not smugly annoying. Recommended first eps: Stevie Wonder (Everybody Say Yeah!), Britney Spears (Give Me a Sign [this one contains my favorite music factoid of all time]), Donna Summer (Queen of Disco) The Siecle History of 19th century France. It just started so hasn't gotten to the parts I'm most interested to hear about (Charles X being a total moron, Dreyfus) but still good so far Unfortunately none of these people are mad on twitter, so y'all might not like them

Atrocious Joe posted:I ended up listening to "It Could Happen Here" this week, which is a former Cracked writer trying to predict what a new US civil war would look like. Cracked for a while was a more "respectable" version of Vice, to the point they would happily have listicle interviews having a Pakistani doc happily talking about the CIA Polio vaccine ordeal or have a Guantanamo worker talk on how well they treat their prisoners, so it's somewhat understandable that the people that came from there would go on to produce docs like that. The best boon the former writers for Cracked ever had was the website deciding to remove a part of their writing to be more advertisement friendly, so they could happily rebrand themselves as DSA-types without having to worry about their name being googled and let's say, finding a piece on how modern LGBTQ people are too mean about Reagan letting the AIDS crisis explode or a piece on how lawmakers who make life worse for rape victims isn't a big deal.

Atomic Hobo covers the UK and nuclear war, both in the popular imagination and in horrible British government planning. The host is a Scottish journalist who is very open about her grappling with the topic while growing up during the 80s and how it's affected her mental health. There are also occasional episodes on non-UK nuclear war topics, ranging from The Day After to Czech nuclear shelters with suicide-proof toilets.

I'm on episode 19 of 60 or so of "revolutions" podcast about the French revolution. I find it really interesting and the host is pretty ok too. I'll probably jump around in order of interest/lack of knowledge. Shoutout to whoever the goon was that recommended it in some cspam thread a couple weeks ago. street fight i enjoy like I would a call in radio show (I used to love them and would gently caress around with Boston's FM talk station back when I worked third shift weekends). They call in shows are long and cover my entire commute round trip, so that's nice too. hell of a way to die is on regular rotation for me, and citations needed is great so far though I've only started listening to it recently
