Just finished a war against France as Italy, and took Tunisia. Note that GB is my ally. I took Gibraltar from them in an early war, Malta in a second war and for some reason, they decided to ally with me. Air power is so insanely good, I love it. Last battle was a lot of my ships, including 2 BC and 4 CV against their 3 BB and 1 CV. Scouts found them, and I sent a strike into the unknown. Turned out that I hit their carrier and set it on fire. Their BBs found my carrier force and put 3 shots into one of my carriers, disabling it for some time. But the return strike... Turns out that 1000 lbs bombs tear old 15k ton battleships apart. First hit, knocked out two turrets on one of them. Up until now, I have disbanded all non-carrier air wings to save money. I know that I lose experience on them, but I can't really say that my land based air is doing much compared to my carrier planes. What do you guys do? And what kind of setup do you have for your land air?

I do feel like a way to put land air in reserve and mobilize easily is badly missing.. otherwise late-game land air upkeep is just ridiculous.

If you haven’t bought the game yet, by the way, the $5 discount/refund for owners of the first game is only available for purchases made before June 30th.

I don't think you save any money on putting land air in reserve. You have to go through every airbase and disband every airwing. Mobilize is easy enough, I just right click every land base and auto-fill. I then tweak whatever airbases I want to, but I mostly leave it as default. I have also expanded them so I get a lot of all types of planes though. For the small bases, I might swap out the medium bombers with dive bombers or torpedo bombers. And I always tell my land air to target ships, never suppress enemy air.

I resumed my game and had another convoy raid where the same battleship came over. She blew up on of my older cruisers, but DDs and air strikes finished her off. So that's cool. Then I finally got an offensive raid battle with actual capital ships on my side. Long story short, one Italian BB exploded, three Austrian BBs battered into hulks and sunk by the surviving Italian BBs, with an assist from the Princess Royal, plus air strikes. Revenge is sweeter in this game than in many others.

Anyone tried making custom nations in this? Myself and a mate want to try running Australia into the ground, but I've no idea where to start. Most I've tried modding is the ship name lists

I'm doing a game as Germany. I won a bunch of wars against Italy and Russia and was finally about equal to the RN. We started our war in 1923. My fleet was 6 BBs, 6 BCs, 6 CAs, 13 CLs, ~30 odd DDs, and maybe 20 subs (subs had recently been outlawed). Oh, and a cute little carrier. The RN was 15 BBs, 15 BCs, 1 CL, and ~15 DDs. "Fleet composition" indeed. I had a couple of excellent super heavy capital ships, but otherwise everything is about equal. War goes as expected...we're blockaded, raiders and subs are doing their thing against British shipping. There's a couple of actions, I sink a couple of BCs, the British invade all of my overseas holdings. Then...all of a sudden, someone decides we need to invade...Wales? So I have to take my relatively tiny battle line out to duke it out with the entire Home Fleet. We actually did ok...we sank 4 BCs for the loss of one of ours. A couple of my BBs got all shot to hell, but we didn't lose any, and the invasion fleet made it to Wales. So, major victory and all that. Then...nothing happened. What the hell was that?

Depending on your invasion range tech you may have actually invaded Ireland as I don't think you can invade the main homeland for any country. Check if there are a pair of crossed swords over the possession flag on the map. It's also very likely that the invasion failed immediately as you don't control the seas around the invasion target. Invasions can be very random even in the planning stages. Twice I've been in a war with Russia playing as Germany for about 20 months each trying to launch an invasion of the Baltic states the entire war but the invasion never launches. I figured you can take the possession for 10 points on victory so it must be invadeable but twice so far it has done nothing but drain my budget for close to 40 months total.

I'm no naval genius but I don't think it is the greatest idea to take your 12 capital ships next to the enemy's coastline at night with only 1 escort. They ate 52 torpedoes altogether.

This game can be quite satisfying. Its interface and theme are not for everyone but I can think of few games that give you a similar feeling of satisfaction when seeing your enemy's whole battlefleet explode and slip beneath the waves. Air strikes can be particularly satisfying. Talking about carriers, do the deck park and deck-edge lift options for carriers actually do anything? I'm in 1935 and unlocked both techs so I'm rebuilding old carriers but nothing changes when I check the boxes. They don't even increase the cost or change the displacement of the ship. Same when designing a CV from scratch, not even a change to the spot value.

WTF France ? 18 knots for an 80-plane CV ? Oh, and they're out of BBs because I sank their only one last turn. Pay attention to the almanac ! I missed the switch to CV heavy fleets and kept building BBs out of habit. I may be screwed.

I've found the almanac (and particularly the summary list there) to be very suspect on details. If you open up the ship details for one of those CVs it'll probably list a different top speed. I've also seen the after battle report ship details give entirely different stats that appear to capture refit info. It makes sense that the in-game intel includes some of of war but it's hard to determine how accurate any given info is.

Dunno-Lars posted:So it makes the planes get ready for strikes faster. That's what the manual says but I see no effect on the ship designer window when clicking on the deck-edge lift or deck park boxes. No changes to the displayed spot value, ship cost or displacement. In fact, when I try to rebuild a carrier that has been specifically rebuilt to add those options they come up unchecked. Maybe something is bugged on my game or there's a hidden constraint on the design like the max 12" of belt armor for BCs designed after 1915.

Now that I actually have the game, I have to note how abysmally its interface is designed, to the point that it actively resists efforts to play it by making important buttons like "end turn" appear off screen.
