It’s so crazy, like we’ve been on dual core/quad core since 2006. And all of a sudden we’re at quad core 13” pros and 6- and then 8(!)- core 15” models and iMacs. I think if it weren’t for all of the bad blood regarding the keyboard and thermals the 2018 and especially 2019 models would feel like real quantum leaps. There are models like the 2011 Air and 2013 rMBP that everybody cites as their favorites because the chipsets inside really let the hardware shine for the first time. Whereas the 2010 Air and first gen rMBP suffered slightly for pioneering cutting edge tech and design with somewhat under-equipped silicon, both revisions saw major performance gains that made the Air’s new form factor or the rMBP’s Retina display the new standard. And it’s a shame that these new MBP’s won’t get nearly the same love because their design still has too many caveats.

Thanks Bob Morales, really appreciate the explanation. I didn't realize they were selling last year's MBP! I ordered a specced one from the Store because I need it and the Adoramo was backordered. Now to figure out how to destroy the data on my '13 MBA SSD and scrap it

I saw something that warned hyperthreading might have to be nerfed or ditched altogether because of these Intel CPU exploits. Which means we really need those extra cores. Or a new chip manufacturer.

Otherwise in the future there should be more implementations cause TB3 is part of USB 4...although I think optional. And knowing USB, god knows what the hell the actual name for the different variants will be.

My kid got a MBA as an early graduation gift and she was talking about her friend's MBP the other day, marveling at the touchbar. Then she said her friend had something she could plug into her ports so she could use them and could I get her one of those. Apparently I never sat her down to have the Birds and the Dongles talk. Kid's been using this for 4 months and hasn't been able to use her USB ports.

Ives was responsible for the hockey puck mouse. I bet he had a hand in that thing you squeezed instead of clicked too. My confidence in his ability to design input devices is suspect. The keyboard would have probably been worse had he helped.

Just imagine what could be done if they ever agreed that, okay, these things are thin enough now, and we'll deign to make them a millimeter or two thicker in order to accommodate a keyboard with individually replacable caps and a less delicate mechanism or a slightly bigger heatsink. Or a camera array that doesn't jut out from the back of your phone, even.

MBPs just received a speed bump. I'm guessing it has to do with Ice Lake/Sunny Cove, these are officially confirmed for the 9-28W range which would cover the the 12" Macbook and 13" MBA/MBP range. They could also be non-touchbar versions of the current MBPs. eames fucked around with this message at 10:50 on Jun 14, 2019 |
