so uh in danger of breaking the mood i've started watching Designated Survivor and for the first five episodes it's a pretty good drama with some reasonably compelling political maneuverings going on, a governor basically seceding etc then in episode six they decide that for some reason the governors(???) are going to make the constitutional president illegitimate(???) unless they first get to bully him a bit and then make him stop all immigration because xenophobia (?????) i've seen shows jump the shark, but this takes the fukken cake

I like the cuckoos that lays eggs in other birds nests and lets the other birds sit on it. Then when the egg hatches, the little bastard rolls all the other eggs out of nest so that he gets all the food. But momma bird is still like

i read a study on australian birds and nestlings that share their nest with a cuckoo actually have a higher survival rate than non-parasitised broods. (leaving aside any chicks/eggs that get actively usurped by the cuckoo of course - it's thought they instinctively target chicks that are weak and unlikely to survive anyway). for little birds especially, apparently the extra warmth from having a plus-size cuckoo chick in the nest makes up for the extra work required to feed it, and the parents don't have to spend as much time in the nest keeping the nestlings warm so they have more time to forage anyway

i've seen a mostly-grown brown cuckoo chick just hanging out and playing with young magpies about the same age that were almost certainly its nest-mates so they don't seem to bear grudges, which is nice
