i just finished it then and i am seriously in shock and awe at how majestically terrible it was. i'd heard it fell apart at the end but didn't expect it to just... be like that

ideological trainwreck aside, narratively speaking i just don't understand how this happened. i do not understand how those writers more-or-less held it together for eight seasons and then ended it with that. how does that even happen

they were hired to do an adaptation and ended up having to take the broken pieces of the narrative and tie them together, somehow, when the original author couldn't even do that. it's like trying to put together a jigsaw puzzle live on stage as people keep throwing pieces from different puzzles on your table. eventually you just hammer together something that is good enough to air and be done with it i pretty much checked out of the show after stannis burned shireen

They also just wanted to get done with it. HBO offered them like four more seasons with many episodes each and millions to earn, they pressed to do it all in one season that additionally only has six episodes, even though the seasons before that were already way shorter than what HBO wanted. They rushed towards an end for three seasons without knowing what that end was, because even GRRM wasn't really that amazingly certain on how it will go. He had some general ideas which were shown, too, but no details. That goes to a point that he even pointed out that the show is now this and he will do something else.

As a counterpoint to the "rushed" thing, almost nothing happened in the last few episodes. They had long cuts of people's faces, Tryion shifting chairs around etc. to stretch time. They capped the show that everyone loved for scenes like the red wedding as if it were the final episode of Full House or something.

I'd assume that's because I imagine those famous notes grrm gave them to make sure they can finish the show in case of him dying were not super detailed. He hinted already towards him having practically no real idea how it shall end, only the general framework being a thing. So maybe it was like "Dany goes mad because heritage as built up in the past 8 seasons but then Jon makes poopoo, then Bran does some magic and becomes rolling king, also white walker are dead because Arya was trained and hinted all the time to do so" and similar stuff, only that the details behind those rather big steps were obscure and unclear, especially since the show has already gone away from the books in the earlier seasons in some points. D&D being like they are instead decided to write their own ending with only the final points being in order, so they shoved every character together, turned it into medieval star wars and then quickly ended the entire arc behind ice and fire in three episodes plus a final tying up loose ends episode. Also, subverted expectations of course. Famous quote.
