If only there was a known way to tension a belt or chain. Maybe they could call it a belt tensioner or something.

Well don't you know I'm caught in a trap?

I kinda respect what he's going for, but that is a lot of time and effort to make a lathe that makes those el cheapo Chinese minis look like precision machines.

The angle he tapped that loving screw hole at bugs the poo poo out of me on a deep psychological level.

The serpentine belt and self-tensioners are honestly one of the best things that have been cranked out. Granted some fail, some leak, a bearing goes bad but the last thing I worry is tossing a belt and trying to use some panty hose to solve it.

The 1ZZ-FE has a serpentine belt tensioner that likes to go bad and rattle. This isn't the pulley, it's the tensioning mechanism making all that racket.

Replacing this tensioner is fuuuun because you have to unbolt an engine mount and jack the engine up so you can remove the long bolt that holds it in place.

Yeppers, we talked about this with the 3800.

Interesting that that the supercharger belt is free and clear.

It is sort of a bitch changing the water pump due to the motor mount fiasco.

You have to do this on a lot of Hondas for one of the V belts too.

... which Honda stuck with pretty solidly into the 00s, at least on their 4 cylinders.

Ugh, the VTEC-4. Theoretically, the timing belt & water pump can be changed with the motor in the car.

This theory does not allow for large fat people with giant sausage hands to work in a space 1" wide, and it's still a bitch even with the driver's side wheel & inner fender well removed.

Fortunately, the engine had decided it's time to run as a pre-mix (especially through #1) so we'll be replacing the motor later this summer with one of those used JDM (allegedly) long blocks (along with every conceiveable peripheral & clutch pack). Until then, I'm tempted to test Marvel Mystery Oil or something that's supposed to seize up the engine seal up the oil rings. I doubt anything will work enough to keep from triggering the P1301 EGR code, at least long enough to get it through Jersey state inspection. It burns a quart of oil every 200-miles.

Man oh man, I think the 355 ranks up at the top of timing belt arguments.

I always like the guys that remove the gas tank and replace the timing belt in the car and the resulting shitstorm conversation.
