A golden helix streaked skyward from the Helvault. A thunderous explosion shattered the silver monolith and Avacyn emerged, free from her prison at last.

Those ghosts also had wings.

Certainly. I think most people here will be trying to make levels that are actually enjoyable to play even if they are less traditional than a normal Mario game. I'll be ready to hit that boo button if they don't.

Goon levels were mostly fine in the first game, and even the ones that weren't were from people deliberately trying to make hard stuff.

That will be my goal at first. I’ll try to make more gimmicky stages later but I won’t go overboard. I want to make stuff that’s enjoyable to play.

My levels are probably going to be bizarre, gimmicky and absolutely unsuitable for a real Mario game, but not in a dickish way. If anything they'll be low to medium difficulty, just strange.

Yeah a lot of the appeal I assume is getting to play levels that could never be in a real Mario game. So stick to good design rules but don't feel bound by the way Nintendo makes Mario levels.

Definitely and I respect the good levels that can do both. I don’t like the NSMBU goomba spam levels that 8 year olds obviously made.

Those are the levels I usually like to make, but sometimes I do more gimmicky stuff.

One thing I liked in Mario Maker 1 was making levels inspired by one of my favorite games... but now I kind of hate that game so I'm not sure I wanna do it again. Lots of people make levels based on other games but I liked doing ones that were more abstract and just stood on their own two feet.

Pretty excited for this game to release next week, enjoyed playing the levels ya'll made in MM1 and loved spending the time crafting my own. I do hope more updates/dlc will roll out after release though.

GameXplain has a new video out detailing the object limits for SMM2:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnvXVe0hNXo

A lot of this is the same as the first game with the notable exception of ground tiles and blocks. You can now have up to 4,000 ground tiles per area plus 2,000 other block types. In the first game you were limited to 2,000 combined.

Also of note is you can only place 5 snake blocks, 10 ! blocks, and 10 track blocks per area. This feels like a pretty harsh limit and will kill some ideas for levels that could have been built based around these.

"Ms. Toadette's Wild Slide"
"Finally a good Luigi game"
"Live in your world, Play in Mario's"

or just

"The Super Mario Maker 2 Super Show"?

Yosuke will now die for you.
Here's a little preview,

Jams and Blitzs:
Something Awful threads as a service
Every week the thread will be hosting a level creation jam from Monday to Friday. We'll create levels around a specific theme. For instance, one of the themes in the previous thread was "arcade".
Every (American time) Friday evening there will be a 24 hour level creation blitz to make a level based on a paticular block type or two or three. Test yourself to see how fast you can make a good level. Or just spend your entire Saturday on it.
If you post a level for either a thread jam or blitz, I will tweet it for you from the thread twitter account.
I will also be tweeting a bunch of the levels I play and like out on the account. But maybe not all of them because we're going to get over 500 levels in the first week, and I need some me time (to create Mario levels).

You will need some sort of capture card, Elgato is usually the one to go with. Then just google "how do I stream with an elgato" and there will be several youtube videos showing you how to do it.
