For two weeks you might want to do daytrips like Kutna Hora or spend 2-3 days in the Alps, like go to Fieberbrunn, hike around, but depends where you’re from and if you’ve spent much time in like, Colorado. Don’t bother with Bratislava. Don’t try to do too much, and never spend less than 3 days in a major city.

I will be in Gengenbach Germany for three days in July but haven't really planned much out. I was planning on just winging it and asking for recommendations on nice towns to do day trips from. That being said, does anyone have any suggestions?

so i just kinda assumed i could get from transylvania to ukraine, but I underestimated the lengths it seems. Has anyone made the trip from Cluj to Lviv? What little info I can get online seems to indicate roughly 20 hours of trains  I might just pussy out and take a train to budapest, its only 8 hrs. Are there any other towns in Hungary worth visiting?

Szimpla Kert is one of the best ones, and if you go late afternoon or early evening it will be pretty relaxed. We even took our dog inside. You can get decent food in there too so go and grab a burger, drink a Hungarian beer or two while enjoying the atmosphere then head home. There's two main bathhouses as well: Gellert and Szechenyi. Both are good in their own way; I personally preferred Szechenyi since when we went to Gellert it was packed with obnoxious American college students but we might've just been unlucky. If you're into photography or old Socialist artwork, there's a place out in the western suburbs called Memento Park. It's where they stuck all the old Communist statues after 1989 so there's some fantastic Soviet realist stuff there. Obviously check out the castle, the parliament and Fisherman's Bastion since that's right near your hotel. Make sure you catch the metro line A (or 1, I forget which). It's the one running directly under Andrassy Avenue from Deak Ferenc to Heroes Square. The stations all have this fantastic faded art deco feel to them and the accordion chime on the train when the doors close is just fantastic. It's also worth wandering a few blocks of Andrassy as imo it's one of the grandest boulevards in Europe and it's where the nicest old-school cafes are.

The Tokaj wine region in the far east of Hungary is also quite good, though I don't know how accessible it would be without a car. I haven't done Romania to Ukraine but from memory a lot of the rail networks in the former Eastern Bloc were designed around getting troops to and from Moscow, rather than anywhere else. So rail travel outside of that can be a bit difficult, though I think Romanian trains are notoriously slow anyway.

Decided to postpone Munich and go to Rome instead. I think I'll be there late September or October, for 4 or 5 nights. Good hotels seem to be expensive so it will probably be an inn or similar. I'll be there with a coworker and I intend to spend most of that time looking at anything that was built 2000 years ago. Yep, there's the Leonardo Express that costs 15 euros direct between the airport and Termini station. If there's more than two of you a taxi will be cheaper since it's a fixed price into the city. If you're into old Roman stuff, spend a day heading out to Ostia Antica, the port of ancient Rome. It's easy to access on the train, there's quite a bit to see, and it's way less crowded than the ancient areas of Rome proper. Harder to access but also worth seeing if you have time is Hadrian's Villa (Villa Adriana) at Tivoli on the outskirts of Rome. The term "villa" is misnomer as it's really more of an imperial city - Hadrian retired here and ran the empire from the palace here for the last 15 or so years of his life. Again - huge, interesting, and uncrowded.

Looking to escape to Europe over Thanksgiving with my wife. We were thinking Germany/Austria if any Christmas markets have opened by then. We're not sold on anything though. Any ideas about Europe on mid-late November? And we live in Vegas so we don't need to chase the sun or anything.

Not to be a downer but kind of a depressing time to go to that part of Europe, possibly the worst time. All the fall colors are gone, but there’s no snow, and no Christmas decorations yet. IMO go to Spain or Italy or Greece or Morocco. Anything north of the Alps pretty much sucks in November. As a kid we exclusively went to Europe in November and while I remember being excited as a kid, I had an impression until I moved here as an adult that everything is always sad and grey and raining.

Seconding Ostia - the day I spent there was the highlight of the week. I'm a classics grad who loves late republic/early empire Roman history so there were 1001 place and things I needed to see in the week I was in Rome, but Ostia was so big, and quiet and immersive, it managed to be the most evocative place of all. Since you're going offseason, it probably won't be crowded at all, but the weather will probably be still nice. I was there in January and got really lucky - weather was cool but very sunny. Getting there is very easy - Piramide metro stop is right beside the local train station that takes you there in about half an hour.

Hope you got a hotel with AC. Otherwise the dire lack of fans in Europe, 30°+ heat, and if you're within 1000 meters of a bar district, the nighttime noise, can make for a pretty rough visit. That said, at least you're not in Basra. https://www.bbc.com/weather/99532 I keep Basra and Omsk (winter) on my weather app to remind myself that things could always be worse.

I'm traveling counter-clockwise through Germany starting on July 9th, and navigating the country counterclockwise via Bacharach/Baden-Baden/Munich/Nurnberg/Dresden/Berlin. Munich and Berlin are the only cities on the itinerary for which I'll be staying multiple days. What should I check out, especially seeing as I'm a left-wing history/culture nerd?

No idea about left wing stuff, but you can't throw a stone without hitting something historically interesting in any large German city besides Frankfurt.

Me and three of my friends are going to Vienna and Budapest in a month. We live in Spain, so the tickets to Vienna aren't very expensive. We have about 6-7 days, so we are planning on doing day trips when we're there. What are some good places to see near those two cities that we can see in a day? My friends are not very keen on history, so I'd appreciate some suggestions about nightlife, bars, resorts and things like that.

No plans for specific cities at all, and still two weeks? Time for a big tour around Scotland. Hotels in Edinburgh are probably really expensive already but don't miss it. I quite liked Inverness when I was there and it's a great hub for seeing the highlands, Loch Ness, some castle ruins, the battlefield of Culloden, even the Isle of Skye on a day trip. Hiking around Scotland is popular. Have immense breakfasts, drink plenty of whisky, and eat a haggis, it sounds intimidating and gross but it's just a particularly delicious sausage thing. Deep fried Mars bar is for tourists although you can get away with it by being one.

Definitely go to Isle of Skye, it's the best part of the Highlands though in July it will be pretty packed. Will probably need a car as well since I don't think there's much PT in that part of the world.

There's a few posts about Budapest in the last page or two, so maybe check those out. It's a pretty good city for partying, though I dunno so much about Vienna. Typical day trips from Vienna will include Schonbrunn Palace, Bratislava, and maybe parts of the Danube.

So you’re out of the frying pan, but into the clouds of midges. Bring insect repellent and if you see clouds of tiny black insects, run like hell. The bites don’t usually do much for a day or so but then they itch for weeks afterwards for many people. Other people have almost no reaction, but if you don’t know for yourselves then make sure to take precautions.

Google Trips is shutting down, that's too bad. It wasn't super useful but the "things to do" and suggested itineraries part was nice. I hate how google just abandons stuff as soon as I get used to using it.
