To be fair, there's been some really bad dubs out there.
Like, for example, any dub where the characters insist on using japanese honorifics, despite not speaking japanese. It's like I'm back in middle school, surrounded by people who think "the bishies are so kawaii desu," :negative:

Philistine.
To contribute to the worst conversation about anime I started the netflix english dub and think the performances are extremely solid so far, whereas my take on the ADV dub was: spirited, but bad. The new Shinji is closer to the GOAT Ogata so that's cool, and Misato's VA balances her wildly different modes well.

The most important takeaways in revisiting this series so far imo: 1) holy poo poo this show looks good 2) the second half of ep 1 is wildly funny 3) wow I forgot about the Human Instrumentality Committee aka Death Cult Illuminati Skype Calls and also two of these members have hook noses. Hm. Huh. Anyway, SEELE Monoliths are cool.

I don't remember them doing this in the MHA dub, but it also didn't really bother me with the Ouran dub.

I kinda liked how the RuroKen dub handled it by having Kenshin refer to everyone kinda formally while Sano just calls everyone "pal." Stuff like that gets the same kinda point across

Yet where is that woman now? Tell me, in what heave does she reside? None of them. Because no God bothered to listen or care. If that is what you think it means to be a God, then you and all your teachings are welcome to do as that poor women did. And vanish from these realms forever.

I don't know if the hook nose holds that kind of significance in Japan. It's always one thing to consider that what is a racist image in one country is not a racist image in another country. So it's possible that they aren't trying to imply something with that. It could even be the case that it's a second degree of racism. In other words, some racist Works give them that feature to imply that they're Jewish. Japan, not having a significant Jewish population and therefore not much of a history with the Jewish population, is not necessarily aware of this at the civilian level so they use this simply because they see it in western fiction and do not know its implication.

This was also made in 1993. So I don't know if that was even like a conspiracy theory at the time. The modern-day argument is on a work that's almost 30 years old.

If I recall correctly, I think this happens in Japan with African American depictions.

It could also simply be a case of the Japanese tendency to depict all Westerners with big noses.

Possible, but in my experience unlikely. As a lot of the time subs defenders are just doing it because of their tribalistic feelings. Though you can argue that’s just what it all is, so it’s not terribly productive

I feel that's just a shortcut for localizing pragmatics, since the Japanese make it super clear when you're talking to someone in a higher or lower social standing than yourself. I'unno, it feels like keeping honorifics because "we want people to know it's set in Japan" is kinda like making your foreign character speak random foreign words to establish they're foreign.

Regarding the ADV dub, admittedly it was pretty rough for the first six or so eps, but then it really improved from there. I haven’t seen the new dub, but I’ve seen a lot of stuff about it that doesn’t really inspire confidence!

Not on about the Kaworu/Shinji stuff specifically, more several lines I liked in the original dub that have been changed to something far more bland. One or two examples wouldn’t be a big deal, but I’m seeing loads, and it seems like a bit of a shame. Not to mention “Children” instead of “Child” would annoy the crap out of me and is patently silly.

I’m just wondering if several of the new viewers are comparing the old and new dub by looking at early episodes. If so, I’ve got no doubt the newer dub would appear better, since the older one took a while to hit its stride.

This is why the new dub is better for new viewers. I tried to watch the old dub and got up to episode 9 before I just had to give it up in disgust with what cheesy, campy trash it was.

The animosity toward the new dub is, as far as I can see, largely due to a (growing?) nostalgic affinity among a new generation of "dweebs" for certain localization liberties, and has little to do with its actual accuracy, which corrects major tone problems and sloppy sound mixing with the original.

In other words, it's new dweebs complaining about changing the same poo poo that the old dweebs complained about 20 years ago, because complaining is what dweebs do. It's dweebs all the way down.

But this is just the opinion of an outsider who doesn't follow y'all's weird anime con drama

I don’t like the new dub because it sounds bad and makes the story harder to follow. As it sounds like it’s written with flowery dialogue without actually being flowery dialogue. Which happens a lot in clunky translations.

If this dub was my first exposure to Evangelion I would have given up three episodes in
