Please Learn How to Play Mario!

Level ID: 1TF-C8F-YWG
Difficulty: Easy
Multiplayer friendly?: Yes

I wanted to challenge myself to make a stage that would fit in the easy classification that actually engages the player in some way. What I came up with is a tutorial stage for new players and children. It teaches all the basic SMB1 moves and power ups in a mostly risk-free setting. This is a remake of a MM1 level, but if you played it back then this one is refined with some stuff added to replace a mystery mushroom section. I'd love to hear impressions, especially if you've got any really young kids.

I just played this in multiplayer with my five-year-old daughter and it was perfect. We only died once via timeout when she had trouble ducking under the wall after CP2, but that's because she still hasn't gotten comfortable with jumps that aren't straight up and down. We'll work on it.

Only weird thing I noticed was that at the Super Ball part she got the power up but I still had the Giant Luigi power up so I couldn't do much in that room without destroying the floor. But other than that it was perfect; I'm proud of her and thankful for you.

EDIT: She's trying the first level in Story Mode and she keeps shaking the controller like a Wiimote whenever she jumps.

It's probably longer and shittier than it needs to be, but I can't help but overcomplicate everything I get my filthy hands on.

Overall I liked this but I feel like you need to come up with a better way to highlight where the red coins are because as it is the player is literally fumbling in the dark and it's hard to know what's going to be a pit vs a place to be explored.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you both enjoyed it. I figured that multiplayer could end up with people keeping the big mushroom but I didn't want to put in a damage filter in case someone actually didn't actually get the big shroom. With nothing to damage you in the superball room I figured I'd just let the player who gets the flower solve the room.

Good use of the escort mission concept and being forced to put the POW in peril was cool. There were two minor hang ups: in the last segment I thought I had to do something with the on/off switch at the thwomp and kept hitting myself with the shell bouncing off of it or accidentally despawning my pow brick. The other thing is watch out for the ends of pipes; leaving them floating looks pretty bad so make sure that they either extend off screen or end in some block.

The new Builder Power seems a bit odd to use- but I still tried to make a level where you can play with it in various THRILLING ways. It was going to serve as a tutorial for some of it's abilities but quickly turned into a actual full blown stage :v:

Made a troll level paying homage to my favorite troll level. It's medium difficulty, I'm aiming for something between three and five deaths per check point if you've never touched a troll level, its possible to one shot if you've played a few of these kinds of levels before. Would like feed back on this if you play it.

I felt like this could have been two levels because this sort of thing can wear thin if you drag it out too long. After the vertical section I felt like I'd played a complete experience and then the second half feels like something else. The timing on the on/off switches in the second half is really awkward so I think that could be slowed down or spaced out more, and it would be better if you kept the fire flower for the 3-way split.

Thoughts on June Hills" HG6-X4J-7RF:

* Overall I like it!
* The autoscrolling in the vertical section is pretty aggressive, especially with the Thwomps
* I got a little annoyed that I had to do the easy opening again every time I died in the more challenging middle section
* lol at the checkpoint
* The free 1up mushroom at the end feels out of place
* The ending is a little cruel--- there's an arrow implying the player should do a blind jump, but if they try, they'll wind up landing on some tiny platforms

Thanks for the feedback! This can only make me better.

I had a choice of either before or after the sub world to drop the checkpoint and I settled on after given that it's the hard part of the stage. The 1up is for the three one ups to get in a stage for endless players that catch it. 1up from coins are 100+ in the stage using the three 30 coins, The 1up block in the end platforms, 1up from catching the top of the goal.

Is there any way to throttle the autoscroller somewhere between slow and normal? Also I was trying to get boss music to play during the sub world but it only dings it shortly for the pipe.

I've been looking forward to playing troll levels for probably over a year of watching CarlSagan42 stream while not owning a Wii U. Feels good to finally play one. Maybe half of the trolls made me laugh when I died to them. Dying to the classic kaizo block jump trap just isn't fun or funny even if you're looking to be trolled. I'm a bit torn on the bowser fire spam in the first half--on the one hand bowser fire is usually garbage, but on the other hand you gave infinite mushrooms so it wasn't really threatening and evoking the atmosphere of jank without actually being jank is a powerful aesthetic for troll levels to have

Bowser Fire - So when I first found the Bowser fire thing it was kinda by accident, because I put the boss arena and first area too close together, and then I remember the level I'm pretty much am ripping off did the exact same thing except on purpose, and I felt like it wasn't too egregious, especially since you could technically avoid two trolls by damage boosting instead of going the intended way. Weirdly enough if you go the intended way and just butt slide quickly you tend to avoid the fireballs completely.

Kaizo Block Jumps - Yea I feel the same way but couldn't help myself, which is why I only set up two and both are telegraphed with coins far in advance. I try to keep them in areas where a cheap death isn't gonna set you back more than a movement.

Thanks for playing!
