The breakdowns are at least different and result in different types of character growth, and in the fourth arc there's a ton of neat plot stuff interspersed throughout. In arc 4 I think the frequency of deaths is a lot lower than the earlier arcs; I remember multiple times when I expected him to die and restart, but it kept going for much longer. Though there is one seriously uncomfortable to read death (anyone who has read it will probably know what I'm talking about - the rabbits). I'm looking forward to the anime adaptation, because arc 4 is some seriously top tier stuff IMO.

I haven't read arc 5 yet, aside from the first handful of chapters, so I don't know how it compares.

he also tends to ally with just the most horrible shitters

I liked that one what-if story where he just ran off with rem and everything was fine forever

I'm curious what the next bonus chapter for the Royal Road FoD rewrite is going to be about. It's looking like the "Rumors" subject is going to win, which is vague enough that I'm curious. Other options were also interesting. One was focused on Kang Zihao (who we don't know a lot about, despite him being one of the top people from Linq Qi's year), and another was called "Death of the Sage," which is also pretty vague.

vvv Oh, I totally forgot that the Sage was referring to the Sage Emperor, haha. Is it kind of vaguely implied that the Sage Emperor was kinda like a typical Xianxia protagonist or something?

You and I both know this is silly, but this is the biggest women's sporting event in the world. Let's try to make the most of it, shall we?
That's not vague. We know Sage died in his bed because harem and yandere wife doesnt really mix.well. We even know who killed him! So does everyone else because the dragon mama was very obvious in blowing holes in the jungle.

CODS BINCH
In Forge if Destiny sequel news, after getting over her speciest murder angst with the help of Best Snek and Moon Ninja Senpai (who barely restrained from giving Ling Qi headpats much to certain readers annoyance) Ling Qi is participating in a Sect wide military exercise. Said exercise is to stomp around th mountains some and make sure all the babby officers who just joined the Inner Sect aren’t going to do something dumb like lead their squad into some easily avoided Cloud Tribe ambush, or challenged some 4th realm mountain ogre to a duel while its trying to flex its way into getting a faerie bride. As part of the scout force, along Qi is assigned her very own goon squad! Angry trout, spooked mountains, cryptic and maybe flirty superior officers, and the Color Out Of Space are just some of the things she has to deal with, but hardest of all is getting revenge on admittedly cut binch who dunked on us with our precious baby boy as the basketball.

You made a terrible enemy that day, Guan Zhi! Nobody chaos dunks Precious! Nobody! :doom:

I really like how the author has just been doing neat scenarios back to back in Threads of Destiny, since he could have taken the easier route of having a bunch of training and random character interaction (which happened during parts of FoD).

Well, I read Savage Divinity.

...I'd say the guy needs an editor, but honestly if you took the knife to this I'm not sure what would be left. There is just so much wallpaper in there, so many words spent signalling that yes, you are reading a Savage Divinity chapter. It's gonna hit all the same beats as the last twenty chapters, and the next twenty. You could probably read it off the inside of your eyelids.

That said, I made it through nearly five hundred chapters, so I guess I can't poo poo on it that hard.

That's higher praise for Savage Divinity than I could give it. There were entire arcs I disliked, but it somehow always managed to just barely avoid being too stupid or too poorly written for me to slog through it.

The arc I stopped on had the MC's alter ego in charge of the body while the original personality was busy healing them or something. It went on way too long. I probably won't pick it up again.

Oh yeah, that arc telescoped out to infinity, apparently because the author was trying to avoid killing off the love interest. I'll say that it does recover once it gets out of that rut (around chapter 120~140 or so), and it never gets that bad again and the alternate personality eventually gets the axe, but peak was probably before that. Before Rain starts collecting pets.

Case in point: in my mind that lake arc takes place about halfway through the story... it's closer to a quarter of the way in. :geno:

Well, I checked. That arc is chapters 137 ~ 158 (a little later than I thought). Latest is numbered 480. So closer to a third than a quarter.

But 158 has a publication date in 2016, so uhh maybe we're thinking of different arcs or you were not as caught up as you thought?

So's his Traveler's Gate Trilogy. Haven't read that one yet but Cradle was so good I'll give it a try. In fact, all of his stuff on Amazon is $0 today except for some of the box sets but you can still get the books individually. Great find!

Traveller’s Gate is a distinct step down, I think. Elder Empire is better, but still not as good as Cradle.

Traveler's Gate is meh. It's kind of...YAish, and it's a rare case of a fantasy story suffering from lack of exposition. Still better than most of the stuff discussed in this thread, of course.

Yeah. There's something very thin and insubstantial about it, and no real sense of place.

On the plus side, though, it's paced like a regular-rear end novel and has an actual ending.

if you ever look at the patreons of some of the independent China novel translators the prices are pretty similar. There is apparently a market of people willing to pay 150$ a month for a handful of advance chapters or to get past QI's ridiculous paywall. Lord only knows who it is though lol. Any time I feel even mildly tempted to spend money on this hobby I just remember that there are literal libraries worth of free stuff online, more than I could read if I had all the free time in the world

Just learn another language, jeez. More seriously though, translation can be a lucrative skill, especially when it's a language in high demand (like Arabic following 9/11). Chinese will continue to be in demand since China's population is huge, and that's just a huge business opportunity right there, whether it's Chinese to another language or vise versa.

I think of all the genres of isekai “I was reincarnated as a dungeon a la Dungeon Keeper” is probably the one I least understand the appeal of.

It’s like someone looked at all the other “isekai’d into a game” stories and decided that what they needed was more stat pages and less of anything resembling a human interaction.

Evil God Average had something else going on at least.

Think of it as 'reborn as a dictator of your own impregnable, inescapable country' and you'll see how it fits into the isekai power fantasy spectrum.

If baseline isekais are just pretending to be in Dragon Quest, dungeon ones are just mixing in a little bit of building games like Minecraft.

It's a subgenre that literally started as Dungeon Keeper fanfic, I don't know what you expect. It's marginally better than the Commander stuff, where you isekai into one of the commander units from Total Annihilation/Supreme Commander/Planetary Annihilation, probably in some unrelated world whose technology you can steal and combine with your own. Spreadsheets may be involved.

If it didn't start as Dungeon Keeper fanfic, then I'm confused, frightened, and would like to know more.

Alright okay enough of that

Anyway, I've been burning through Royal Road's "Best Rated" stories and they're, well, most of them are competent, I guess. The Last Science is probably the good one, though I find myself not really liking any of the characters apart from Natalie. The Simulacrum is alright too, if you have time for a harem-comedy isekai. Post-Human starts well but goes nowhere, and The Last Angel is a much, much better riff on the exact same premise. Brimstone Fantasy is a power fantasy with videogame numbers. I didn't hate it.

Let's put a simile on that face
A dazzling simile
Twinkling like the night sky
The Scourged Earth on RRL isn't horrible, for post-apoc LitRPG. The Law of Averages is an interesting twist on the isekai formula. The New World is straight up number porn for videogame number likers while still having passable action scenes, even as it approaches DBZ levels of power escalation. Super Minion is a fun read about an inhuman shapeshifter in a post-apocalyptic Silver Age'ish setting and his escapades in finding his place.

Post-Human is just a retread of We Are Legion (We Are Bob), with some small changes to the background. It also has a wet fart of an ending, so you didn't miss much if you didn't finish it. I tried starting The Simulacrum, but I just couldn't get into it. Something about it just turned me off.

I thought The Simulacrum was at its best when it was making fun of the harem genre. Segueing into a harem itself was a poor choice.
