What's crazy is that California has been overbuilding for earthquakes for so long that short of a 8.5+ right on the coast it's not gonna do any more damage than some of the thunderstorms we've been getting here in the east.

Overbuilding isn't really the right term. There's been a lot of research done in seismic analysis in the last 30 years leading to improved design codes allowing for more efficient structures that perform better when subjected to cyclical and blast loads. The cost has been in retrofitting existing critical facilities to meet those standards. Also your estimate of 8.5 being the threshold is a bit much. Maybe for things like hospitals, but anything over 7.5 with a well placed epicenter is gonna gently caress all kinds of poo poo up.

My very limited understanding is you can do OK at reinforcing critical buildings to resist stuff but long, thin ribbons of concrete suspended in the air that people want to drive on is a big "lol gently caress you".

An existing headache in LA right now is the Dingbat style apartments which popped up like weeds in the 1960's. The 1-3 story apartments with the garage [on stilts] on the ground floor. 13,000 or so got flagged as needing retrofit asap so they can be brought up to code for earthquake standards. I lived in one for a bit in Playa Del Rey about 10 years ago, wouldn't be a fun situation to deal with 1000's of apartments with the first floor pancaked. I'm guessing the retrofit solution is to place large forms around existing metal poles/structural and pour thicker/stronger reinforcements. Or just raze the suckers and put needed higher density housing in with modern building standards :v:

That would probably make it worse, the keys to seismic resistance are flexibility along the vertical axis and rigidity in the horizontal plane, plus giving the foundation a way to slide around relative to the ground if at all possible.

In the Bay Area they are pretty dang rare. I recall it being an oddity and something to gawk and admire for extra space while growing up.

In the greater zone of the New Madrid fault line. But hardly anybody near New Madrid has a basement since it’s literal swamp land that they dredged. Gotta drive into IL or more northern or Ozark MO before you really see basements.

Of course that fault cuts through tornado country. So you kinda gamble on how nature is most likely to take a stab at you.

I will say I was on the 10th floor of the math/science building of SIUC when aftershocks hit after the earthquake a decade ago and it was unsettling to say the least.

I don’t think people down there even realize they live near a fault line.

I don’t know about Illinois but in Southeast Missouri the fault line is a big part of the science and history educations. In English class we read a book about the big one happening, in history we learned about the last big quakes, and in science class we learned all about the science of earthquakes and the fault line.

It was definitely something we learned.

Ehh, you can move to a relatively stable area. Faults are literally everywhere. I'd bet you could live several lives in a place like Nebraska and never feel an earthquake. Wouldn't experience much fun either, but whatever keeps your plates from shaking.

It's more like, if nature wants you dead, it finds a way. If not earthquakes and wildfires, then tornadoes and boredom. Otherwise, right there with ya on how much I forgot about geology classes.
