To be frank I find it kinda silly to go "Why would someone with a history of left-wing history entertain right wing ordeals be dismissed". Perhaps I'm saying this from somewhere that has seen former Carnation Revolution participants and Left Wing party founders go on Centre-Right orgs to argue for Right causes under the guise of "As someone who has faught actual fascism, IIII", which included arguing against nearly every strike, strangling Venezuela even more and supporting the Libyan War (Even as European MEPs and on Portuguese government places), all done under the banner of "I'm being open minded and pragmatic, why is the left being a baby about this". You could make a similar case for Eldridge Cleaver or Patrick Moore.

chapo certainly going for an interesting take cleanly combining: 1) even if elected a leftist president would be unlikely to be able to pass their economics policies, but it would be important in building a societal shift, with 2) we should jettison all concern for other social issues to elect the candidate with the purest economics policies, passing those will do far more for vulnerable groups.

i presume there is an actual agreement to never have arguments about actual fundamental politics on the podcast (or they are amazingly in sync), because i can't say the stances that come up mesh all that well always.

bernie still the best option ofc.

that is ambers take, i don't think it is even that unfairly represented.

e: and it is not even wrong in a reality where it is more doable to actually reform the economic system.

#2 isn't really a discussion though? If Bernie were somehow worse on any of these issues than any other candidate then we'd be talking about it. When did Chapo explicitly say say these issues should be ignored?

Chapo has never said that social issues don't matter compared to economic ones to my knowledge. They talk about how universal programs/redistributive policies are the best way to turn out large numbers of nonvoters because they're easy to understand and they would vastly improve most people's material conditions. And given how Clinton fared with student loan deferments for entrepreneurs or whatever it's the most salient lesson of 2016 probably. I mean they're critical of idpol but that seems to be more from a standpoint that it makes organizing around a left agenda way harder than it has to be. And obviously with universal programs there's lots of overlap for what is an economic or a social issue.

When idpol is weaponized by disingenuous people it's transparent as hell. Being skeptical of lovely people who intentionally use it as a wedge (see the Ilhan Omar thing) is not the same thing as being skeptical of idpol as a concept.

i liked the parts where they interviewed the millennial teen that's radicalizing him, and when they accidentally offended him. i have no recollection of what he actually said so it probably wanr that ridiculous. he was brimming with energy tho

hot take: if you stop viewing economics/race/gender etc. as being interlocking autonmous systems, and instead see them as aspects of one integrated, self-reproducing yet contestable system, none of these questions like "is it class OR social issues?" even arise. you just start focusing on the concrete phenomena, and forming abstractions on ur own that detail how these concrete phenomena persist over time
