Apparently it was actually a stretch goal for the Star Power Patreon.

... Which never got reached. So, literally no one wanted it, but he decided to do it anyway.

Well, poo poo, Cucumber Quest is getting hit by the Hiatus/Format Change stick.

It's the usual. Things in her life are changing, doesn't have the time/energy to keep up (updates have been very sporadic for quite a while now), etc. She doesn't seem to mention having another gig anywhere, so illustration may not be her Real Job.

Gigi posted:

I’ll get right to the point: I can’t continue working on CQ as is. I don’t want to ramble about the details, but things are changing in my life, and I just don’t have the time or energy to keep this webcomic as my number-one priority going forward.

I know this will be disappointing to a lot of you, and I’m sorry. Please believe me when I say this wasn’t an easy decision to make. I’ve been trying to avoid writing this post for a long while, but it’s time for me to be honest with myself about what I’m capable of. So, page 931 will be the last page of this story in its current form.

Here’s the plan: Cucumber Quest is going on a lengthy hiatus. At the end of that hiatus, the story will be concluded in one big update–not as a comic, but in illustrated script format. If you’re wondering what that will look like, stay tuned! I’ve completed the remainder of Chapter 5 as an illustrated script, which you can read after this post.

This is exactly what happened to Poppy Opossum, and we've seen how that turned out. I'm going to guess Gigi isn't going to spend her art time drawing for a quasi-secret porn Patreon/Twitter, though.

According to IMDB she is a prop designer, so it's not like she's in control of an entire show's production or anything. She works on Star vs. the Forces of Evil, and a quick look shows it has a pretty light, Dexter's Lab style (there is probably a real name for this I don't know) so her work is not out of whack for it. My kids liked her Witch Boy books, which ultimately is what I guess matters.

and right now she's a writer, not an artist, for the upcoming disney show Owl House

It's like if she wasn't sure if she wanted to draw a hand or a foot and drew both.

And if this scene is supposed to be set in a Alice in Wonderland type fantasy world where things randomly change size, then it's good art, but otherwise it's really not.

And this face looks like a lovecraftian Deep One.

It's almost as if she had an iron rod flung through her brain like Phineas P. Gage and suddenly was unable to draw well. Cf. her earlier stuff:

The fact that you're having to cherry-pick some of the very first stuff she did years ago, or stuff from the era when the comic had obviously ceased to be a top priority, is pretty telling. Ostertag is pretty obviously capable of creating good art. I tried to hire her myself once for some RPG work, but she was well out of my price range.

Rob Leifeld has been a professionally employed comic book artist for 30 years and still doesn’t know how to draw feet. That’s not really anything to go on, just saying.

I didn't cherry-pick anything, just used the start of the last chapter I had posted earlier and the first page of the comic. What did you try to pay her? Experience points or bottle caps? And would you mind posting some of the good art you were talking about?

I don't know if the artist has a twitter account of not, but since your first thought on encountering bad webcomic art is to start stalking the artist, it tells quite a lot of you. Be honest with us. How many people do you stalk?

Endtown has played around with alternate realities and in the latest arc the story has hinted at metatextual stuff and now it's coming to a head with a possible multiversal metatextual apocalypse.

Also I don't remember if I posted this or not but I checked out A Ghost Story and it is good. The characterization is strong and the designs of each supernatural creature is inspired by usually very cute too.

I think that thread got closed when the indeterminate hiatus of comic-death descended on SFP.

Actually, that's an interesting question (to me): What are some comics that went onto indefinite hiatus and then actually came back and finished?

The real reason for SFP's decline in quality was its writing, which Ostertag wasn't responsible for.

In Ian's recent show that he made for Cartoon Network, OK KO, he did an episode that featured Hero and basically served as an ending to the comic. It even ends in literally a panel by panel comic with his signature at the bottom and everything. It's called "A Hero's Fate" if you feel like looking it up.
