hallebarrysoetoro posted:wasn't the polling some silicon valley esque algorithm that was completely botched Second, all polls have to apply a "likely voter model", whether they're public polls or internal polls. Essentially, they guess at what the eventual demographic representation of the voters will be, then use that on the polling sample they took to extrapolate the results. Most pollsters in 2016 were wrong about that likely voter model, and the problem was compounded by most of them being wrong in the same way, which is a known phenomenon called herding. So most of the public polling was not only wrong, it was wrong in a way that reinforced their misconception that Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania were safe. Third, and this is the really funny poo poo, when they did find out that they were wrong, they decided not to do anything about it, because they were afraid it might set off a panic that Dread Abuela was in trouble and might lose. Let that one sink in for a moment.

If they react this way to actual reality, how well do you think they'd have accepted a prediction like that? I know what I'd have done in their shoes.

Their reaction was understandable in the moment, I'll grant, but given how close the margins ended up being, it's indefensible in hindsight. The entire operation couldn't conceive of losing and everything they did was predicated on that. It's why they threw money into running up vote totals in solid blue areas that wouldn't affect the electoral college results.

I'd agree with you if there was any chance they'd have been listened to, but we both know (and you stated) that "the entire operation couldn't conceive of losing" and they would've been personally harmed for no benefit. Better to take the money and the L and just move on as some battles just aren't winnable.

All the blame lies with the top campaign staff and Hillary herself who got so high on their own supply that they ran one of the most incompetent political campaigns in living memory.

I volunteered for Hillary in my home county in PA, one of the biggest swings from Obama to Trump (and a large enough one to almost completely make up the deficit she lost by in the state) and there was absolutely no panic there, just a push for me to really get people into gear for the downticket and I ran into a person who threatened me with a gun who was listed as a likely Hill voter lol
