Fireworks are produced in terrible and dangerous conditions. No one is thinking, “let’s show up the Americans.” Also China produces almost all the fireworks so making duds would probably be just as likely to interfere with Canada day or Bastille day or Rooty Tooty UK day.

I was riding a bike in rural Belize at dusk when I heard a bunch of crashing and branches breaking in the forest beside me for a t least a minute. It stopped when I passed a pond. It may have been a cougar or jaguar. Or a deer or tapir. But running along with me for that long makes me think predator. We were not allowed to be alone outside after dark for a reason. One woman walked the 3km road from town back to our huts alone after dark and as dumb and reckless as I tend to be, even I wouldn't do that.
