This is actually weirdly important to ShB's narrative structure. (Big spoilers to follow, obviously.)

Someone on Reddit pointed out that the major plot beats are all structured around ancient Greek ideals of 'love'.

It's a surprisingly coherent narrative thread that works well to give both character development and an overarching theme that ties every beat together.
I thought something like this was going on because I half-recognized the names in there but I didn't make the connection with the non-obviously named ones :v:

But that thread is certainly there, especially in the sidequests. Heck that Miner Interlude that people complain about ties in perfectly with that theme!

Eimi posted:

Yeah like that's amazing lore analysis itt and I didn't think I could love the story more, but I was wrong.

Though, this came up with some friends and I just want to add my own analysis onto our favorite Ascian's character. Namely that saying that Emet views himself as a hero...

Don't forget that both him plucking Y'shtola from the lifestream all casual 'oh what's the color of her soul again?' like and the recreation of Amaurot are both displays of his power. Like, the first we had to get some specialists to help with so we knew it was possible, but the latter is just a big ol' 'wait THIS is what he calls his abode!?' surprise.

This post owns and makes a ton of sense.

What I think makes it the most interesting is that you don't even really need to know what the Greek names mean to sort of feel the thematic coherence because each time, they approach the theme from multiple angles. Each theme is reflected in both a character's growth and in the plot, so when the boss is (sometimes) named after the type of love being explored, it's more of a confirmation of what you've already felt was going on than anything.

Shadowbringers is the best-written and best-constructed Final Fantasy story in well over a decade.

Regarding Ascians: Another thread is the issues of immortality. It's not a coincidence, I think, that Il Mheg's story is before Emet-Selch presents himself to the party. The fae are immortal, but as Feo Ul puts it, they live in the moment, and that is a reason they remain fascinated with mortals; they appreciate the ephemeral, the now, the efforts for something that may not ever see fruition in their own lifetimes. The Ascians are also immortal, but Emet-Selch definitely lives in the past. From his telling of it, it sounds like he'd attempted to find some measure of life amongst the newer mortality, but had been left unfulfilled every time; no one was HIS peer, because he could only view them as pale reflections of Amaurot. He's a person displaced, a man out of time. And the millennia wore him down. Not for nothing was "everyone, no matter how powerful, can feel doubt and despair" a theme.

The irony of the Rejoining bringing together a hero capable of opposing the Zodiark plot surely wasn't lost on Emet-Selch.

I've been playing with the number keys since WoW days so I'm pretty used to this hotkey set up, though WHM has a lot more skills than a WoW Priest. I'm usually more focused on my party health bars which are close to the center, to the right of my character, and I have my focus target above that. Usually the focus is for keeping track of the tank, it doesn't seem that useful for keeping track of a boss since you can't see the focus' cast bar. The few times I wiped on the 80 dungeon was because I wasn't looking at the boss casting, at least until I figured out the fight pattern.

Nearly everything is part of a roulette with daily bonuses. Barring that, you can run them unsynced at higher levels if needed. It's no problem to find or start up a group to farm poo poo as old as the ARR primals, and everything in between.

I love the potoo,
and the potoo loves you.
Another theory about the Greek loves and the bosses is that they're also emblematic of the Warrior of Varying Illumination's relationship with the central character(s) of each zone.

Philia, the love of friends, is the Warden of Lakeland and the Crystarium - who else but the Crystal Exarch demonstrates the depth of friendship with the Warrior, and by the same token the Warrior's burgeoning friendship with the whole Crystarium - even the whole of the First, given that Philia is the first Warden you fight.

Xenia, if you roll with the idea that that's what Titania represents, strikes a chord with both Feo Ul and Urianger. Il Mheg is literally Feo Ul's home, but the Warrior's association with being a guest in Urianger's home goes all the way back to when the Warrior was first invited to join the Scions in ARR. Urianger is the one who lives full-time in the Waking Sands, and he's the one who takes care of it even after the Scions mostly move on to Mor Dhona.

Eros is something more passionate and fiery than the other kinds of love, and even if you don't ship Y'shtola and the Warrior (it was a friend saying that Eros representing this zone and Y'shtola was indicative that they're the OTP that got me thinking about this more broadly) her relationship with the Warrior certainly has been more lively than the Warrior's relationship with pretty much everyone else. There's sass going back and forth between them, Y'shtola is one of the few Scions who routinely says what she means to the Warrior's face. Also don't forget that Y'shtola is blind, and sees the Warrior by their aether - and Eros is the love of beauty.

Storge is the zone of Thancred and Mini-filia, and there's a strong theme of the Scions being a family throughout Shadowbringers. The Warrior is less consistently and overtly a potentially rival parental figure to Mini-filia, but of her three main potential parental figures, the Warrior is the one who doesn't try to shape her, and just listens to her and tells her that they'll support her no matter what.

Agape, the love of charity, is the zone of Eulmore and Alphinaud. I think it's fair to say that whatever your feelings about Alph, he's hosed up a lot over the years - and the Warrior's forgiven him and helped him grow. The Warrior is the hero fighting for everyone, even those who have made mistakes like Alph and the people of Eulmore.

The 24 man raids are done in roulettes, so they shouldn't be a problem. As are the 8 man raids (except for ARR coil), which you could also unsync easily. Savage 8 man often have unynced groups running them for easy farm as well.

Mine is pretty basic. If you're wondering about the odd layout of the hotbars its because I use a G13 to play.

I do have a fancy macro that switches most of my hud on/off when I draw/sheath my weapon (it actually loads a second HUD setup that moves certain things as well).

I ended up caring more about Zenos and taking him out than pope man, so that worked out in its favor too. I think HW had the better final fight though.
