i like how it's pretty well accepted that Phoenix, AZ shouldn't loving exist whatsoever but it's Right-Wing Thought to point out that a city that's about to be washed into the Gulf also probably shouldn't exist

for the record I'd sacrifice a thousand Phoenixes for a single New Orleans

The American desert should be totally uninhabited and it's insane we have multiple actual cities there

it should be inhabited by solar panels and nuclear plants yes I am aware of transmission problems

and agree, New Orleans and most of the "older" cities threatened by climate change are worth the resources to protect in a way that Omaha and Phoenix just fuckin do not measure

at some point we're going to be talking like this about denver though

you can read about how people would sleep out on their porches in the cool summer nighttime air, and that all went to poo poo when the people from chicago and minnesota moved in.

My dude I've been talking up the Great Lakes for ages now

Move here, instead of moving away from here

We only suffer from extreme heat exhaustion for only 3 months a year, which is going to seem like paradise 15 years from now

Just watching the news, apparently they are worried that real flooding will happen on Monday or Tuesday, but it remains unclear, and probably won't be that bad

it sounds like those 20-foot levees the river forecast center talks about arent supposed to get overtopped by this event. hope so. i'm guessing the overtopped levee is some lovely local one, as opposed to the lovely federal ones

the article posted:

These are not Mississippi River levees.

doesn't help the people getting flooded by non-mississippi river water of course, but there it is

edit: here's an article about the federal levees in the area
https://www.mvn.usace.army.mil/Portals/56/docs/PAO/FactSheets/PlaqueminesParish.pdf
it says they're protecting the 'belle chase polder' at a 100 yr return period level. they even use the dutch word

meanwhile, here's an article about levees in the netherlands
http://www.climatechangesspatialpla...+management.pdf
there's a map in there that shows there are no levees designed at below a 1,250 yr return period

that kind of sums up the difference between how we do flood protection and how the netherlands does flood protection. we plan for a 1% chance of failure every year :911:

oh, and i suppose the dutch numbers behind the return period estimate are more likely to be backed by realistic climate change assumptions too
