I got this title for the dumbest fucking possible take on sea shanties. Specifically, I derailed the meme thread because sailors in the 18th century weren't woke enough for me, and you shouldn't sing sea shanties. In fact, don't have any fun ever.

I guess this means memes started about 2001?

Okay... Keep your head, Steve boy...

I think the dancing baby/hampster dance/Mahir Cagri stuff from the late 90s were more viral than memes. They were popular things lots of people linked to, but no one really did anything with them.

All Your Base and Ate My Balls were closer to the current idea of memes being templates or themes to iterate on.

I mean, that was no different than dooty mr. skeltal tbh or Mr. Paper "Get hosed no I don't need your help" Clip from Office 98.

If we are calling memes image with text in a satirical/humorous context (intended) then...well, ORLY owl/All your base is it it seems.

By any reasonable definition of meme, categorically: yes.

At a certain point you come up against the fact that culture spreads organically, which is why trying to define memes is pointless.

I think a good definition of a meme is a cultural in-joke; they usually start with a seed joke and then spread outward with new derived jokes. I'm not sure things that are obviously funny to everyone and/or don't require derivatives like fart jokes would count. There's certainly a difference between a widespread joke and a meme. A meme has viral properties, in that you need to be exposed to it and then when your resistance is low you start to enjoy it and find it funny, and then you become a carrier who spreads said meme to others.

The question was internet memes though. When did internet memes, particularly image+text, really kick off where a large consensus of people can say “aha! Yes! This is certainly one of the first internet memes!”
