I've got a pocket full of cheese🧀, and a garden full of trees🌴.

A spin that can be put on it, (not a good spin, nor one that I believe) is:

"Look at our tough WWE athletes! Still hungry, still relatable, the way they drive themselves everywhere and stay in normal people hotels/motels. Unlike those spoiled rich crybaby athletes from other major sports."

Vince, and the WWE marketing machine could try to do that. Dunno how well it would work, since the counter argument is "Why are sportspeople at the top of their game being forced to drive a rental car for several hours, and pay for that rental car out of their own pocket?"

Yeah, and like that's thing. If Bayley is sitting down in the same seat that NBA, MLB, NHL, NFL, UFC, boxing, Olympic, whatever athletes are then the expectation will be that yeah, there's a lot of "the tough road to get here and all the sacrifices it took" to her story but now that she's at the top she's got SOME comfort like they all do. The reality that she's driving her own rental car and worried about running out of gas to get to the show? That probably genuinely blew Leahy's mind as a sports reporter/interviewer.

I don't know if it will be a thing with WWE now that they're on Fox, though. They've had their deal with ESPN for years now and it seems to have barely affected them negatively. ESPN seems fine ignoring this stuff and they have the same perspective. This case is probably just one person being genuinely shocked and no higher ups picking through her random FS1 show because they weren't looking for it.

Well to be fair ESPN has never once attempted to make WWE look like a legitimate sport. They have given them and the talent some screen time but at no point had they ever treated them like it was real. I believe that WWE has paid for that placement on ESPN as well over the years.

No Fox is going to be treating them like real sport and having their real reporters dealing with talent and talking about it. There is no way they can shy around things. I am pretty sure Vince can huff and puff but daddy Fox isn't going to back down to him. Hell, UFC was on Fox getting a hell of a lot less money and their programs criticized UFC constantly. Honestly for the first time maybe ever Vince is not in a position of power with his tv partners and it is showing.

This without doubt would work on certain people. I'm a big fan of motorsports, and for example in motorcycle racing, many fans (usually boomers) see MotoGP and WSBK guys as coddled pansies, and the dudes who do public road racing events like the Isle of Man for considerably less money and far more danger are true heroes.

Nobody has ever actually reported this. It's a misunderstanding from when Meltzer said something to the effect of "it's basically a time buy" or "it's almost like a time buy" on audio. I don't think he ever clarified it when asked, but that he didn't outright say it was a time buy implied that he was referring to how random and incongruous the SportsCenter segments were. (They were almost always in-character sit-down interviews that were completely unlike anything else on SportsCenter.)

ESPN has always been insistent that there was no formal, much less financial deal with WWE and...I kind of believe them? The SportsCenter thing seemed like a bone thrown to Coach and it was by FAR the most egregious part of ESPN's dealings with WWE.

There is something up with them. There is some sort of deal being worked out between the two at times. Money seems like the most likely reason. Like the WWE Espy thing reeks of being paid for. It looks obvious when they have an MMA award not named for and only including UFC.

Believing ESPN about nearly anything about their business is a bad idea. I can see them denying it since it makes them look incredibly bad. Effectively making paid programming without disclosing it is very, very bad. It would also ruin a lot of journalistic integrity.

WWE desperately craves to seem legit and big time. Slipping Disney some cash for coverage seems exactly something they would do. I would think the Good Morning America stuff is probably a part of the same deal.

But again, nobody has reported it. Bryan Alvarez randomly blurted out with no real context on a WOL that WWE paid for the ESPY category, but dude is not exactly a reporter anymore and, for whatever it is or isn't worth, ESPN vociferously denied that ANYONE can buy an ESPY. (And honestly, if they were paying for it, an award that's given out quickly on the red carpet seems like a waste of money.) Regardless, it's entirely justifiable to think that WWE has some kind of financial arrangement with ESPN, but there's been zero actual reporting to that effect. Plus the egregious stuff pretty much died with the SportsCenter segment ending and Coach being laid off over two years ago.

Like I said I don’t think it was with ESPN directly. I think they made an agreement with Disney. Which if they had I am not surprised no one has reported on it since unless you had access to a signed contract it is very hard to prove. Dave is very, very careful to not report on things he doesn’t have proof or sources on. This would be something that both sides involved would be tight lipped about.

It is very interesting how they always have WWE champions after Mania and the like on GMA instead of the Today Show which is owned by NBC. Same as the interview with Roman after he came back from Leukemia. Like the Espy and weird ESPN coverage it is all very odd and strange since they have no business relationship. ESPN is very famous for ignoring sports that they have no relationship with the NHL is the most obvious example of this.

Where there is smoke there is fire.
