oh. again that really depends on the professional courtesy you think you owe. you're the only one that can answer that question. the current company i'm talking to has been asking how soon can i start and i told them they have to wait until i finish my current contract which will be 2.5 months from now. this is because i've enjoyed working for this company and have built a good network here as well as a reputation for "getting the job done". i told them that i'd tell my managers of my intention to resign once the contract was finished so the client wouldn't have to be any wiser. this is mostly because i'm unsure of the new company and want to be able to run back to my current company and manager should things go belly up. my first company i told my boss to go gently caress himself and was escorted out of the building by security. so you really just have to judge each scenario as they come.

pointsofdata posted:Do you actually need a data scientist or do you really need a data engineer who can put together some analytics? You'll get fairly different candidates despite how close the roles seem. Well, there is some element of research in that we are experimenting with our methods, implementing algorithms from papers, etc. But I would say data science is a skill we need (among others skills) more than Data Scientist is a role we need. If we hire someone who can develop new analyses but their code sucks and they need to hand it off to someone else to make it testable, etc. for production, then that would be a Not Good outcome.

I've had interviewers ask "why ?" after I've given my expected salary and I wonder if it's a dumbass trick to throw you off ? It came up for my current job and i politely brushed it off. I don't believe you're actually supposed to make a good case for yourself arguing experience and degrees ?

This isn't so much hiring or recruiting, but I have a friend who works at a little "build websites for local businesses" shop around Columbus Ohio that is about 20 years out of date, i.e. backend entirely written in perl. He recently asked them for a raise and they asked him to bring in his monthly budget.

i'm in the uk and just got an offer which includes a bonus, like 10%. why is this a thing instead of 10% extra salary?
|
# ? Jul 16, 2019 17:16 |
|
like a signing bonus? they do that because it happens only once instead of every year. if it's an annual bonus, check to see if it's tied to any specific performance goals that would let them take it away. if it's a guaranteed 10% bonus on top of your salary every year then idk maybe some sort of tax fraud.

Sagebrush posted:if it's a guaranteed 10% bonus on top of your salary every year then idk maybe some sort of tax fraud. this can be some way around a "level" system in your company as well. so two developers may be on the same salary band and step but differ in bonuses. big companies do this with RSU and bonus packages together. alternatively if its one time and up front its just to cover your transition costs. are you local? that might be money set aside for relocation

sorry yeah annual bonus- sounds like it is tied to performance as well. they also keep on counting pension contributions to total comp, is that normal? can't remember it being a thing
|
# ? Jul 16, 2019 17:32 |

total comp is a metric to make things look better from the company side so i'd be surprised if they didn't put that in there but i'm a millenial american so i have no idea what a pension even is. a 401k match is part of "total comp" though

yeah i am effectively a child so find it hard to get excited about pension. for reference the role is a functional scala role in london, 57k base + 10% bonus + whatever pension contributions. hmmmmm

lots of tech jobs have a "target" bonus where theyre like "we'll try to give you a 10% bonus every year" it means literally nothing except sometimes you actually get a bonus, but other times theyre like "yeah no bonuses this year", sometimes it's tied to company performance, or personal performance, or some combination thereof it's not like a red flag or anything, you will likely get some 'free' money every year, but don't budget around it or something in some industries it is drat near guaranteed comp, in others its guaranteed youll get 0 bucks every year
