I don't think I've got excited about new rap in nearly a decade. Not particularly looking for backpacker stuff unless there's someone doing something real important. Otherwise, I've been there and walked away. Not into the Migos-type flow or like 90% of stuff that goes crazy on the hi-hat. I've found Future listenable but I rarely seek him out. Someone told me to listen to G-Eazy and it was brilliantly produced but lifeless imo. Because someone will recommend Immortal Technique, please don't. As far as stuff I've liked, New York golden age stuff is always good. I like fight music with hard steady beats. I like Killer Mike a lot more than I like RTJ. Cam'ron is good. I liked NOE from Byrd Gang; basically just Jay-Z doing stuff that wasn't as Jay-Z about it. I care a lot more about emotion and texture than actual lyrical content, so things with unusual or heavily distorted beats are cool imo. I'm open to things outside this vibe if it's innovative or important or whatever. Stuff I've liked: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg3ZAcAQ7H4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_AQFnqMY3E https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Z5HXC58oR8 I never liked Lil B's gimmick stuff, but always liked this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5I-hDgEKSW8

I would like recommendations for electronic stuff similar to Griz, Gramatik, and Pretty Lights. I especially like stuff with soul samples and horns. Old soul samples or stuff created specifically for the artist's work, like what Pretty Lights does. Not so much into dubsteppy stuff. I've looked into Bassnectar a little (too harsh, too clubby) and Big Gigantic, and they don't excite me much. There was this one artist, Arch Nemesis, but it seems like he hasn't done anything new in years.

I like midwest emo, Joy Division inspired post-punk, pop-punk with good vocals, and folk punk. Make some recommendations that are on bandcamp, preferably not well-known people (so no Modern Basbeall, Prawn, Rosenstock, or IDLES, or AJJ, I love them all but know about 'em already).

If you like the weirder, trippier side of Ween, maybe give the band mentioned just above your post a shot (Sleepytime Gorilla Museum). Or Butthole Surfers, some Flaming Lips, some Negativland, Mr. Bungle, Nurse With Wound, Coil, The Residents.

I feel there must be a 1:1 inspiration to Holly Herndon's new album from the Sacred Harp sound. https://youtu.be/rT7GkureYiE I just love how they're untrained and just loving going for it. More Lomax recordings from back in the day: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lL7VE85sHjxpM8Hdd4z2kQp1IGKRkaePs Sacred Harp is a living tradition, you can find recordings from the last few years. It was created so that anyone could sing, and they use shapes to signify what to sing, rather than notes. The written score is more of a suggestion than to be followed strictly note for note. The first bit of each song, they just sing the notes they're gonna use, so anyone unfamiliar will be able to learn. You'll notice there's no stage, they sit in a square and sing to each other rather than some separate audience. All in all, a unique American vocal song form that is very cool and unique. Specifically stuff similar to Asheru, Pyinfamous, or Sound Providers. I don't know if that qualifies as backpacker rap, but they don't show up on Youtube searches for that term. It's not so much the wokeness element that I like as the general sound - more piano and jazz samples, complex lyrics, calmer voices, lazier rhythms, etc. I also like Aesop Rock, MF DOOM, Mos Def/Yasiin Bey, Talib Kweli, Tribe, all Madlib's stuff, Dilated Peoples, Del/Deltron/Hieroglyphics, Busdriver, Blackalicious. I don't have much interest in Atmosphere, Immortal Technique, Brother Ali etc right now. I know that's really picky and specific, but Asheru only has like three albums and they came out 10 years ago. Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli were supposed to do another Black Star album last year but that didn't happen. HenryJLittlefinger fucked around with this message at 18:20 on Jul 16, 2019 |
