I was going to edit, but that doesn't show new posts, so instead double posting. Hadn't seen a magpie with this coloring before. Females typically have at least some black around the heads. Oddly Colored Magpie by B. B., on Flickr

I'm no nature photographer but I was sitting on the beach taking pics of dogs in the ocean when my wife pointed out a bird that had just snagged a fish. I was somehow able to turn the camera on, zoom to the telephoto end, autofocus, and get a few shots off. Can anybody identify the bird for me? Heron? Osprey? This was in the Florida panhandle.

Osprey, by the talons mostly.

/\/\/\ Birds like that in flight are super hard for me to shoot. Osprey, yeah I agree, based on the talons and the feathers. The out-of-focus cooler in the foreground makes it look like the bird snagged the fish from somebody's catch.

Thanks, swallows are really hard to get for me too. I usually just cheat and just use my oly red dot sight and burst forever.

I have one little friend who sits as look out for the ruby throated or rufous hummingbirds. It doesn't matter where I am, he goes to his post on the pole above "their" feeders and will chase off any of the broad-tails who come by. The broad-tails have their own feeder. The raptor, on the other hand, is an unwelcome guest since my chickens free range. He's a handsome devil. Digging That Hairstyle by B. B., on Flickr My Buddy in Profile by B. Recent trip to Chester, UK lead me to the fantastic falconry centre there. Some beautiful birds, although they have a tendency to fly off and chase the local pigeons. I brought an Aplomado Falcon into my studio this weekend! I'm not sure if studio stuff belongs in this thread, but, well, it's a bird! His name is Nopalito. We were able to elicit a brief hover before alighting on his handler's glove.

This little guy was I think sitting in this box I had used to paint some color samples yesterday. We walked right by him and startled him up onto the top of the box where he promptly took a poo poo. He's just chilling out there now, he looks like a young mourning dove, maybe just fledged. There are two adults who pick around the ground of our goldfinch feeder at the niger scraps so I assume he's waiting on one of them to come back. I went in the back door to not scare him further.
