I like the look of that. Unfortunately we can't have nice things with open reservoirs because some furry rear end in a top hat likes to drown things in them.

Yeah, exactly! And thank you.

He's perked up a bit. He is eating a lot more and also I took him to a different yard for him to explore and he got excited and stalked around. Still, I do hate when he delicately loafs and settles down because it's such a sign that something is wrong. In any event he's currently infuriating me by wanting inside and outside, so at least that's normal <3

:same: My old girl (20 yo) stopped eating yesterday, I got some squishy stuff into her this morning but she clearly needs a vet visit and it's probably teeth again (not that she has all that many left at this stage). But it's always late Friday or the weekend when she pulls this poo poo. I can't take her Monday either because I have to escort my mother to an oncologist visit.

Listen, I've been around a bit, you know, and I thought I'd seen some creepy things go on in the movie business, but I really have to say this is the most disgusting thing that's ever happened to me.
We have a 7 year old cat that only goes outside with direct supervision, and a 4 year old cat that as of this year goes out more or less as it pleases. I realize this is an obnoxiously controversial subject here; I'm just going to say the cats have bells, we live way up in the country, if it were up to me neither of them would go outside ever, and I'm profoundly disinterested in discussing that angle of things. Both 100% up to date on all shots, flea and tick treatments.

As of like a week ago, the younger cat seems to be displaying non-recognition aggression towards the older cat, seemingly out of the blue. They have always tussled a bit, but spent lots of time chilling out together happily. The younger cat has a few time made these really alarming sounds that sound like human screaming, basically. Other than that he's acting normal, he's friendly to us, he's eating and sleeping etc.

We've seperated their food for now and are getting a separate litterbox, but does anyone else have any ideas? Totally strange; I'm open to the idea that the behavioral change of getting outside time is causing behavioral changes inside, but, again, that ship has sailed and is not up for discussion / debate / reply.

hmm, that's possible; we have seen 1-2 other cats, sporadically, over the past couple years.

the weird thing is, watching their behavior real closely today -- it almost seems like the older cat is being antagonistic, keeps wanting to try to get close to the younger cat, or sit someplace where he has eyes on him from above. Earlier I witnessed the younger cat chasing the older cat, after hearing a yowl. But, it also seems possible to us that the younger cat is just trying to play with the older cat in the way he's gotten used to over the last couple years, and now the older cat isn't seeing it as "play" and wires are getting crossed. Durr. I grew up with entirely indoor/outdoor cats (no litterboxes period), and then have had nothing but indoor cats for the past ~15 years. I've noticed obvious behavioral differences between the two, but did not consider behavioral changes from environmental changes. It makes a lot of sense, though.

Jackie hasn't really been the perfect kitty ever since we stopped living alone and got roommates :( I'm sure (I sincerely hope) that things are okay, but one of the things that worry me is her displaying some of the irrationally aggressive behaviors she used to show when she felt her space was being crowded. I've brought her to the vet more than once because of these behavioral changes in the past 6 months, but she's still healthy (albeit she could lose 2 more pounds still) so her being pissy is just... cat being a cat, which I should have known but like... When your cat starts meowing at you angrily out of the blue while cuddling and then start trying to *backpaw* me in the face, which is really silly even for my cat.

I just *really* hope nobody who lives here or comes here is being... mean, or abusive towards her. I'm not in the greatest situation ever with all of my roommates right now, and I barely know two of them at all. I'm (hopefully) moving to a more stable home situation in a couple months on the other side of the country, and I know that Jackie will be like... WORLDS safer there than she is here, probably. Jackie's gone to being pretty goddamn hostile to people she doesn't like, is the thing. I'm fairly sure right now I'm the only one she allows to even touch her without her growling or meowing angrily. It upsets me because I don't know what's got her so annoyed - she's healthy and fine otherwise.

If I were to try and guess, I'd say it's that it's a fairly chaotic and crowded apartment right now. There's about one person too many living here, and in a small place that makes a BIG difference. Jackie seems to be in a much better mood lately when she's with me and cuddling and getting attention.. I think the 'angry meows' and half-hearted swipes are her way of telling me that she is just NOT truly digging this. Because this behavior reminds me a little bit of when we had to stay at a Robert Johnson/Days Inn for a couple weeks between apartments, and she was just not happy *at all* being in those places and made that known to me in a similar manner.

Just to be clear, here is the specific behavior I'm encountering - please tell me if any of you encountered this before, and what it ended up meaning in your case, because she was healthy and fine the last time I took her but I'm still concerned, a *little* bit. So what happens is, Jackie will be cuddled up with me on my bed like usual before a nap or bedtime, She usually has her back to me so she can lean back against me.

Now, what's been happening is after 20-40 minutes of her purring/sleeping/being petted softly and so on, and Jackie seems happy but she stops purring at a certain point and kinda rolls over to her other side so she is facing me VERY directly and staring straight at me. This is when she starts with the angry meowing, again and again, and the half-hearted little swipes she takes with the soft part of her paw to my FACE. And even though I know she won't hurt me it scares the poo poo out me every single time she does it. After a couple minutes of the mad meowing and her seeming tenseness, I usually have to like... make her leave - because even with the angry meowing and pawing, her ears are not down like a scared/mad cat, and fur is not bushy. She also never hisses or growls at me during these episodes, never. Nor does she ever draw any blood or leave marks with her untrimmed claws.

So, I dunno, I'd like to hear your thoughts. I truly hope she is OK and gets through this phase, I really really want my eternally kind and good-humored Jack back.

Anyone have any experience with unneutered boy kitties? My sister is wanting me to babysit her 5 month old kitten this weekend but I have a (spayed) 5 yr old indoor girl and I’m renting so if there’s a high chance he’ll spray the place or get aggressive with her I’d rather not. That said I don’t know if that’s over-reacting?

As far as I know, male kittens don't tend to start spraying until 6 months usually. That said, five is almost six, and some do earlier.

Both my boys are very sweet and were neutered at five months. I'd be more worried about the girl getting aggressive than the boy; most female cats tend to be a little more protective of their space on average.

I have good luck with Da Bird and Da Bee and random dingly balls and fake mice made from rabbit fur. Another thing that works great is basically anything that can go on the end of Da Bird wand. The rainbow felt strip toys are also a favorite. Cat dancer is just stiff wire and some rolled up paper on the end but the way it moves drives my cats insane its wonderfully simple and dumb and cheap. If you find your idiot ignoring a toy and it not getting moved for a while, put it away for a couple of weeks, then bring it back out, it'll get play like it was new again. I have several different kinds of toys that I cycle in and out and when the change happens I'll hear the cats upstairs randomly pouncing on the "new" toys.

cheap mice: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LYD7ZWJ
Da Bee: https://www.amazon.com/Go-Cat-Teaser-Attachments-Catcher/dp/B00V6HU44S

Cat Dancer: https://www.amazon.com/Dancer-Original-Interactive-Kitten-Action/dp/B00Y7ZLE0Y

Go-Cat stuff on amazon seems to run a bit pricey so it could be worth looking around local for it. So far I only find it at the independent pet shops, not the chains.

That is true she’d definitely eat him, he’s still very tiny. She has gotten on ok with boy cats before but they were neutered and older and a lil kitten might be too much for her. I’ll just keep them separated and worry about spraying if it happens I guess??

we're pretending the cats have never met each other and doing the thing of keeping one in a room for a day, then switching them to get used to each other's scent, plus feliway.

super weird. radical behavioral changes. at this point we're sort of wondering if the older cat who had become beta, is seeing a change in life circumstances as an opportunity to try to become alpha.

it’s a good name but sadly I was prohibited from naming him anything overtly related to his horniness. we settled on Francisco, although mostly we’re calling him Pancho (or Ponch)

kinda worried right now - he was very sneezy almost immediately after arrival at home, the congestion has gotten bad, & he’s pretty sleepy. he has FIV so this isn’t exactly great, & we had been encouraging the other cat who is also FIV+ to get used to Pancho’s scent/presence so now I’m anxious about transmission as well. he’s got a vet appointment tomorrow but in the meantime I know I’m gonna be overreacting to everything because I don’t know this guy’s “normal” yet. bleh

e: ok, took him into a steamy bathroom & he perked right the gently caress up as soon as he could breathe again. much less anxious now. poor guy is clearly miserable tho, I’m really hoping this is just the tail end of a one-off cold instead of something chronic that the shelter missed

I think you might be misinterpreting Jackie's signals here! Soft paws with relaxed ears and tail means she isn't angry, or even upset. I'd need to hear the vocalizations to like actually be sure but my Max will soft-paw my face when she wants more attention. She likes to sit on my lap, then if I'm not petting her enough she'll crawl up my chest and paw at my lip like "hey, hey human, hey, where's the pets human???" She does this if I'm in bed too sometimes.

Sam on the other hand will stand behind my computer chair and continuously howl like he's being mauled by a bear until I turn around and pet him. People would honestly be concerned by that noise if they heard it... So sometimes vocalizations are just whatever they've noticed will get your attention the most.

As long as Jackie has both a high place to sit to get above all the chaos in the house and a low place to hide if she's feeling overwhelmed she should be okay. Your pets can sense your stress level though, so if you've been very stressed out (which it kinda sounds like) some of that may be transferring to her.

Honestly it sounds like she's just being a cat.

Bring one to another room, shut the door, work 1:1, at least to start. You want strong contingencies of behavior -> click -> treat, and if the other cat is hearing the click without the other two, it weakens the conditioning.

A little late to the discussion on cat toys, but I thought I'd share a Jet Mousie:

It isn't much to look at, but it is nearly indestructible, big enough for a big cat to hold and bunny-kick, and every cat I've had has loved it. The coin is a US quarter for scale.

Jet Mousie is homemade out of a scrap of thick denim from a pair of blue jeans. There is one slightly curved seam along the top, and a flat seam on the back end. It is stuffed with catnip; whenever the catnip stops being fragrant, I open the back end seam, wash and dry the denim shell, restuff it with fresh 'nip and sew it shut again. I got the cord from a fabric store, and it is about 40 inches long.

My cats love to jump for it when it is pulled or whirled around on the cord (hence the name). When I am not there to supervise, I take the cord off and just let them have the mouse.

I started making these for my first Maine Coon, because the store-bought mice were too small and too quickly destroyed. This particular Jet Mousie is almost 40 years old and still in service. It had ears, eyes and a tail when it started. Those are long gone, but the mouse goes on.
