Mine eventually get Nimble so I throw basic chain shirts on them, which you'll get alot of off raiders, and they'll be good for a while until I can transition to noble mail.

Light armour plus nimble. A big reason to have archers is for overwhelm, and that will work better if they aren't in heavy armour.

Archers should be built for nimble builds which means head+chest armor totals between 15-20 fatigue. This works well because nimble reduces all HP based damage taken, which is the majority of dangerous ranged fire, or what your archers get shot at with the most. Nimble is more valuable here than battle forged for one big reason: crossbow fire from arbalesters does ~70% through-armor damage.

I always build for the 150 mail armor with the 90 closed mail coif, the highest common armor helmet without a vision penalty. This puts the nimble reduction at ~51%, but gives them a decent armor layer to work with too. That combo will keep them alive vs several arbalester/barbarian thrown weapon shots, which is the biggest threat to them by far on average. I'll upgrade with light armor named pieces as I get them, and I'll go over 20 fatigue if I got a named piece that was a little heavier but had like 200 armor attached, because it still acts as a larger barrier to incoming damage.

EDIT: VVVV Interesting, never noticed it didn't block vision

Once archers have Anticipation and Footwork I find that outside of extreme situations like 30 Orc camps or the 47 Goblin city they don't get hit anyway. With Nimble as well you can kinda give them whatever. I never buy them any armor; they just get leftover mail coifs and basic mail shirts.

Just published two additional mods.

The first one is just another requested company origin that took 10 minutes to code/copy-paste together:

https://www.nexusmods.com/battlebrothers/mods/141
As much as this is just a copy-paste job, I kinda like it.

The much bigger mod I just uploaded, however, is a background rebalancing mod Gridlocked and I started working on about one and half months ago or something like that:
https://www.nexusmods.com/battlebrothers/mods/142

This mod...
...rebalances character backgrounds.
...increases gear variety and, for some backgrounds, level ranges.
...adds special traits to some backgrounds.
...reduces reliance on dedicated ranged backgrounds.

Took two or three long Discord calls and a month of playtesting and tweaking to get where it is. I could probably continue tweaking it for another month at least but interest in the game seems to wane and I'm definitely starting to burn out on it myself so I'm putting it out there now. Overall, I've definitely been using more backgrounds than before, and entering the crisis with three archers, none of which is a Hunter, was a nice change when it happened (although Hunters are still the best).

It's possible to increase the number of concurrent contracts very easily but I don't know how much that breaks. Never tried modding that so far.

My big wish for this game is they do something with map variety; something like castle sieges with some kind of vertical design or something. It's very addicting but I am also getting pretty burnt out mainly because it's always the same few maps and the bigger battles just feel like they take too long with all the individual movements.

I'm not sure how much verticality the game could handle considering the, let's say, rudimentary line of sight mechanics.

But yeah, more tile sets and things like buildings you can enter, maybe even terrain features you can actually interact with, would do a lot for the game.
And it's something mods are very unlikely to tackle.

At some point this game decided that I really like 2H axes with nearly full bonus rolls on their damage. The game is correct.

EDIT: Also I can definitely sing the praises of a duelist throwing specialist now. They loving manhandle poo poo at 2-3 spaces away. It's the damage of a crossbow but the RoF of a warbow. Extremely good against dudes like named knights or swordmasters too, since they tend to have way less ranged resistance than melee.

My brave militia boys almost cleared the monolith with no deaths, except for the nimble cleaver bro who got hit three times in a row in the head. Twice by warscythes and once by a necrosavant. RIP he and his zweihander's helmet. Turns out pure style won't turn aside every blow.

In related news, it's a peculiar feeling when your band of talented scrubs turned into hardened killers is on a late game noble war raiding mission and 30 militia in their best gambesons turn up to shield the backwoods hog farm that you're getting paid to burn down. Thank god like half of them had the sense to run away.

Mostly yes. Positioning matters as there are times where you can get clear shots on distant dudes because they are directly in line with the archer, but most of the time in crowds you just aim for second line guys so the little red markers for LoS blocks is on enemies. You want to avoid shield guys if at all possible as well, i.e. aiming at an archer with two polearms in front of him is an excellent area target. Also you can shoot over one tile gaps with no penalty so sometimes it’s worth moving up to get clearer shots as the battle progresses. That and hopping on hills gives a slight hit bonus along with the vision/range increase.

This required editing more scripts than I thought it would but :toot:

Intended to replace a low level variant of Brigand Raiders that is different from regular Raiders in a few ways. For instance, the low level variant has no Masteries, the regular does. Which isn't great because sometimes you don't know if a Raider with a pike can move one or two hexes before attacking or something like that.

Started a Lone Wolf playthrough having gone to day 360 and the three crises with my previous band of northern raiders. I think the game clicked for me somewhere around day 300 and after that I really just wanted restart with better boys.

Lone Wolf is extremely good fun, hacking dozens of thugs to pieces is never getting old. the loop of adrenaline, indomitable, chop off a head, recover is extremely strong and ultimately necessary when facing anything more than thugs.

Has anyone used mods for continuing character progress? My lone wolf is lvl 12 now, I'd be fine with a perk every three levels or five levels or something? Opinions appreciated.

The starting gear of sellswords armour and longsword isn't quite cutting it anymore, need to be able to access more stamina up around 104 in combat but you burn through it rapidly, especially when facing anyone with maces, which are becoming my highest priority target. Day 36 and I'm considering investing in building a company after the noble crisis, depending on how my finances are looking around then.

Can't get enough of this game.

I use the veteran levels mod on the nexus that gives a perk every 3 levels past 11 and >1 stat rolls in a couple random categories past 11. I couldn’t really live without either anymore, they both make keeping guys alive for hundreds of days feel more rewarding and they let you do things like get pathfinder on everyone without feeling like you’re missing something crucial along the way. The random stat rolls is especially neat to me, you don’t get to just boost Melee skills forever but you’ll get opportunities to shore up resolve and what not over time. Getting a (normal) guy to 17 takes ~300 days so it’s not like either of these things happens fast.

You’re going to want to build a party for the first crisis IMO, if you’re playing on vet/expert you will simply just run into too many enemies that can hurt you to not have a party after a while. Barbarian reavers/chosen, ancient polearms/cleavers, and noble war parties are all capable of landing enough hits to burn you down. Most of the noble town missions in general will require help.

My usual route is checking towns for 2-3 star in good stat guys and building the party slowly. Lone Wolf lets you pace yourself in that way, which is really nice. The tryout stars mod is super nice here, and frankly you’ll very likely want to consider the mod that gives Lone Wolf 4 reserve slots, as not having room to grab extra archers or what not can get really tedious late game.

EDIT: Here's my full mod list from a previous post (with the duds removed):

Mazz posted:

You're in luck! They are all using mod hooks now.

Script Hooks

I went mod hunting today and found some good ones. I'm going to link a lot of the ones I'm probably gonna use. Sticking to mainly UI stuff if I can, at least for now, but there are some decent item changing ones on there too if you look around.

Tryout Talents
The original guy updated his with mod hooks so it works with other stuff now, also has a 2x cost version. The Alternative version doesn't use mod hooks!

Better Obituary
Shows a lot more detail in the obit page, including bros lost to events and stuff.

Veteran level perks
Adds some randomized stat rolls for levels above 11 and also gives a perk point every 3 levels after 11, more important it's two seperate files!

Auto End Turn Toggle
Adds a toggle to the top bar for the automatically ending turn at >2 AP, so you can use adrenaline and such on those characters.

Better Combat Log
Expands size + shows rolls for morale checks and such if you care to know

Settlement Tooltips
Tooltips shows what things like "Well Supplied" is actually doing to a settlement.

Settlement proximity prices
Shows the sell and buy modifiers in the tooltips of towns as you get close, also a full map version if you want

Easier Lone Wolf
This one is more of a personal for this 500+ day game, I'm not abandoning my archers because the legendary locations penalize them :v: , YMMV

Be careful about the age of mods if you grab other ones, some of the interesting ones like longer crisis or the event frequency mods are pretty outdated and don't seem to work 100% right.

I killed the Hexe first but there was no reward except what I took from their corpses.

So my noble war finally ended after like 280 days, removed the mod at ~160. I switched sides to one of the weaker houses because I wanted that famed weapon, but that house still lost to the major one on the map, the one I usually play for and had taken a couple forts for before the switch.

Anyway, war ends and Armsberg has like 60-70% of the towns on the map. We’re finally back to peace so I can interact with them again, thank god.

Less than 50-60 days later one of their noble missions sends me into the northern woods to kill an orc camp, only for a 24 man noble party to ambush me immediately after. Killing them was trivial at this point, but now I have all the joys of a noble war ongoing without any of the rewards and no way to recover the rep with all those towns

Dogs are super important yes, because the nightmares die to any hit. You should have dogs on everyone who doesn't have a necklace on as a general thing. They are force multipliers, even if its just hit sponges.

Frankly you should mostly just avoid alps till you have a solid company because low MAtk means getting overwhelmed by nightmares and low resolve means they die extra fast to the nightmare attack. Use swords and spears if you can, they have a flat hit % bonus, 10/20% respectively. Try to open paths for bros to make big jumps towards the alps, you need to move ASAP to the alps themselves. Again, much easier with bros who can handle 1-2 nightmares each round consistently.

FWIW Theres very little reason to ever actually fight alps though, just do the retreat thing and move on unless you can't.

On the golden goose, depends if you need the money and how long you plan to play. Works either way.

Hunt11 posted:

Against alps this is really only true for something like greatswords on guys with 2+ nightmares, you're better off giving everyone 1h for the most part here because its number of individual attacks, not the damage done. Like geists, the nightmares die to any damage taken, and the alps themselves go down fast once in range.

Both the barb heavy axes and spears are great, the axes do a bit more armor damage but with duelist the barb spears do something like 22-40 HP damage per throw, before the 20-40% increases. It’s like a dude with crossbow mastery who can shoot 3 times a round with berserking.

You can’t wear the shield once you utilize duelist btw, only throwing nets. And bags/belts + quick hands is huge, don’t overlook those. Bags especially, makes the bagged gear fatigue free.

This game I’m running 3 warbows, 2 xbows and 1 thrown, they’re all kicking rear end. Warbows still probably come off as the most consistently useful because of the reach + RoF (esp a good named one), but the others certainly have their place. I’d probably swap out 1 xbow in hindsight for another thrower but I’m happy for now.

Gotta see how the thrown do against the ancient dead still, it’s my last crisis.

Seriously though, the way to do this is to get a high resolve, I'd say above 70. Took fortified mind for this, and I haven't regretted it. If you get wavering you're in trouble. Also, kill the guys with maces and clubs first. They steal fatigue and have at least a 5% chance of stunning you. I'd also recommend buying training as often as possible, as when you get underdog and berserk, you'll be going through 10-12 bandits with few issues. Maybe avoid marksmen until you get battleforged :v:
