KyoAni has done some incredible trolls on the anime community before, but I doubt that influenced the killer.

Examples of their trolling:

First, an unintended one was their adaptation of the series Free, which is about hot dudes swimming, and their fanbase, who normally expected sexy and/or cute girls were enraged that they were not being pandered to. The rage rekindles slightly with each new season.

Second, and way funnier: their extremely in-demand second season of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya had one normal episode then spent literally 8 weeks of their 14-week season airing the same episode 8 times. All that varied were camera angles, clothing and the way some of the lines were said, as if the same episode was improvised 8 times on a stage. Otherwise it was the exact same episode. Fans got angrier and angrier until by the seventh week their rage could overpower the sun. They only didn't get angrier by the eighth because the series was called Endless Eight and they resigned themselves to it being the final episode. ...they were certainly nervous when the next week rolled around, though.

haha, that's funny. Partly related to the discussion... When I went through Akihabara it became quite apparent how important the fetishization of young girls is there. There are some animes that I like and I'm certainly no prude but some of the stores where they had the more extreme stuff actually made me a bit uncomfortable. There's a real industry for youthful innocence there. I saw the lineup for a idol group (no idea who they were) but the guys there were some of the creepiest looking dudes. The leers and stares my girlfriend got from those kind of people made her uncomfortable as well, not to mention the convenience store clerk who asked to grab her tits. No, she was not dressed provocatively.

Japan looks like a tough place for women.

I caught an old Japanese guy going through a girl's bag in a hostel after she went for a shower. I held him up until she came back.
He claimed he dropped some money. She even was missing a pair of underwear. The night clerks didn't want to involve the police and were more suspicious of her friend who was really pissed off.
The panty snatcher disappeared for a few days. It turned out he was a long term guest.
He was still staying when I left.

The only thing I can confidently conclude from my stay there is that they're all horribly stiff and robotic when it comes to customer service. I was given 3 different SIM cards when I arrived at Narita and none of them worked. The lady working there told me to turn my phone on and off like 10 times, which I did. Then she brought her boss, who also made me do the same thing. Then they put me on the phone with their main company or something, who also promptly told me to turn my phone on and off.

My phone was zapped by a lightning strike as it was charging through a power bank. Took it to a shop and they immediately diagnosed it with a bill of 20,000 yen to have it shipped to China and back for some reason? Fixed it back home for like $30. None of the poo poo I wrote is relevant to anything at all but I like remembering all of this.

I should clarify, I didn't 'Just go to Japan once'. I have ties via family with Japan (and China to a small extent) and haven't been there since the late 90's. I'm just ruminating about my observations about my last trip there based on my interest in transformative changes going on in the world, and my experiences of it as an adult. This reminds me of discussing Japanese porn with a Japanese poster elsewhere. His response to stuff like lolicom was "pretty much nobody here actually likes that stuff." It's the same for Yakuza, you hear about how Yakuza - organized criminals - are treated like they're no big deal. It was a few years ago now but there was supposed to be some big Yakuza gang war happening or something and the news articles on it and forum posts were like "yep, there goes those wacky gangsters murdering each other again and the cops don't care." Then I do some research and learn that most Japanese people hate criminal thugs just like anybody else and it's more that the L DP and those in power are or were horribly corrupt and always cut the Yakuza slack.

We get various "interesting facts" leaked out to us here in the West and conclude that those facts represent Japan, even though they represent .1% of Japan at best. It's always infuriated me how quickly people onlin take to stereotyping Japan. And that's to say nothing of how people act like the Empire of Japan is coming back any time some random Japanese reactionary does something. Again, something like .1% of the population does not equal Japan. The end of Yukio Maishima seems as relevant now as it was when it happened. Nobody wants the Empire back.

In other news, the elections for the House of Councillors have ended just now and we already have the results. The JDP still keeps its majority but lost 10 seats, making it even harder for them to pass constitutional reforms. The democratic-constitutionalists were the ones who made the most gains, going from 24 to 32 members.

Other than that, turnout was below 50%, giving us situations like this.

Honestly, 10 seats is pretty small considering their refusal to consider delaying the increase in the consumption tax to 10% in October. Since most people don't trust the opposition parties to run the country, the LDP can pretty much do whatever the gently caress it wants.

The laws around "anti-social groups" in Japan are broad and vague enough that even something as seemingly (and actually) innocent as this example, could land the comedians and the company in trouble. Particularly, for example, if the comedians found out later on that they had accepted money from them, but kept quiet about it. Even if they kept quiet about it because it was a few months or years later that they found out, and they figured it didn't matter. This is probably the company covering their own rear end as much as it is anybody clutching pearls (although it is definitely that, as well).
