It's an arcade port by infamously bad developer Micronics, so right out of the gate you know it's going to look bad, control poorly, and flicker like crazy. The difficulty is super high, even for a game of its era. It tries to do something a little different and potentially interesting with its source material, but botches the attempt so badly that it turned out to be a baffling and opaque mishmash of gameplay elements and ideas. There's a power-up / power-down system for weapons and armor that makes no sense to anyone, even with the benefit of a manual you know Arino will absolutely not read. I don't know anyone that likes this game, or has even beaten it out of sheer bloody-mindedness. I have a sweet spot for ambitious failures, and I've bounced off this game often enough to just write it off completely.

It is the most incomprehensible game that was officially released for the NES. It's like a fever dream. You take a ton of damage, fight horribly ugly enemies, and just start spinning around when you die. Aside from the graphics, it actually was a pretty accurate arcade port. They both suck and are both beyond human understanding.

they should have released an arcade version of takeshi's challenge where you have to like leave a polite note on the machine asking no one to touch it for an hour while the map gets exposed to light and anyone can just come by and gently caress it up

Isn't Athena mostly noteworthy as she's one of the first video game waifus or something? You see her a lot on art. She's even front and center on the snk 40th anniversary collection. The Japanese instruction manual is even almost like a small manga.

Yeah, RPGs don't always translate to great episodes, but Earthbound is pretty odd so I see this being fun. That said, I definitely wouldn't plan on SA-GCCX tackling that any time soon as it will likely be a 3 parter with a poo poo-ton of text.

Earthbound is my favorite game of all time. It's pretty easy, though; I don't see him really having trouble with it, but it being an RPG means it will still take a while. Checking speedruns.com shows me that even the fastest runs of the game take at least 3.5 hours. Anyway, Earthbound!
