Then after being tired from doing that I decided to go the opposite route. And made a level that you played through pretty much in a single screen. Very short, almost impossible to die, use this as a pallet cleanser. :v:

I want to talk about this level and the extreme importance of testing this level showed me.

I had made this level to basically be as death free as possible. There aren't any enemies and the little platforming challenges you have just drop you below a one-way wall and to a door back at the start.

Yet it has a 50% clear rate.

So I check it, and it turns out people are dying to the spiny-shell. They jump up and run into the shell, despite it being pushed away from them on a conveyor belt. I had assumed people would, even if they did jump up on it, not run into the one object in the entire level that can hurt Mario. But nope. They do. I realize now in hindsight what I should have done is put the shell behind a one way wall so that the player can't run to it and it can still be moved into position when the proper switch is hit.

Of course, if that had been done the only way to die would have been to wait out the 500 second timer.

Somebody would have done that, I bet.

The story mode does a pretty good job of teaching you how things interact with each other and the stages are pretty good too, so it's not a bad idea to jump in.

Decent little level, but not a whole lot to it other than having to do the stage forward and then backward.

No Enemies

This is a weird level. There's huge scattering of things, but no real unified concept and the intention seems to be just figure out which of the branching paths actually goes to the goal. It makes the level feel kind of flat.

Nifty autoscrolling with a good mix up for the challenges going down. It had a good rhythm for the platforming so it felt challenging but at the same time not out of control.

The campaign is great for seeing some good levels that demonstrate the game mechanics. You're not going to stumble into any duds there or grotesquely unfair levels.

But feel free to check out https://randomactsofmario.com/ for goon stages or just start designing. The Dojo (accessed by the pidgeon icon at the bottom of the menu) has a ton of great lessons to help people understand how to make a good level.

Making stuff that looks good mainly boils down to using parts in creative ways. Functionally speaking, almost all decoration are usually either functionally identical to more basic stuff or do literally nothing. In some cases you get levels where the parts are used in a unique decorative and mechanical fashion, like in my beehive level (forgive the self-indulgence). The falling donut platforms create the visual style of the stage while also serving as a big gameplay mechanic as most of the terrain is unstable. That's the ideal, but its not always possible. As long as your decorative touches don't interfere with gameplay, go crazy with em.

But I think the best way to start using parts decoratively is actually to try and create a course around a theme and do your best to sell that theme. I assume most people build levels around gameplay first, which is obviously the normal way, but approaching from the theme perspective can work really well.

The faster we're falling,
We're stopping and stalling
We're running in circles again
Just as things were looking up
You said it wasn't good enough
But still we're trying one more time

Maybe we're just trying too hard
When really it's closer than it is too far

Cause I'm in too deep, and I'm trying to keep
Up above in my head, instead of going under
Cause I'm in too deep, and I'm trying to keep
Up above in my head, instead of going under
Instead of going under

Seems like each time
I'm with you I loose my mind
Because I'm bending over backwards to relate
It's one thing to complain
But when you're driving me insane
Well then I think it's time that we took a break

Maybe we're just trying to hard
When really it's closer than it is too far

Thanks for playing my level. I'm glad the idea caught on easily enough. To answer your question at the end, I added a hidden key in one of the rooms as a reward for going out of their way. It can skip the pink coins, the boss, or allow access to that bonus door. But of course it was initally put there for symmetry.

Normally I use coin trails to indicate where the player should go, but one section is directly after a P-switch hit so that's not possible. I'll probably use tracks for an indicator there, should I use tracks for the whole level for consistency even though I don't think they look as nice as coins?
