Emus look like they’re missing half of their body when they run or roll around or do anything that involves moving

I'm kinda surprised nobody has done that to the kiwi with the surprise food delivery video. I'm currently on the bus and it is taking too long to load animated gifs, or I'd post some for you.

Apparently, the story behind this one was that the Shepard owners were fostering a few kittens and the kitten instantly became friends with the doggo and so they had to keep it.

That's actually kinda elementary as far as bird intelligence goes. I guess the next step up would be a latch of some kind, and those little fucks would probably figure that out too, given some time. It's still awesome though

Let me tell you a story. Over in the Boston thread, poster street doc said "started feeding a skinny 1yo street cat, friendly, tame, but drat skinny" This was the point where I fell in love, and I was like "give me a few days to get things ready". Talked to my roommate, who is moving out at the end of August, and we agreed to keep the new cat quarantined in my room until she got a clean bill of health from the vet. Things moved quickly and it was getting hot and I didn't want anything to happen to this poor sweet baby so I swung by a pet store and grabbed some supplies, food, treats, a cheapo cardboard carrier, collar, litterbox, etc. Basically everything I would need to have a cat. Texted my roommate like "uh, bringing her home today, plan is still to keep her in my room for the time being, getting her vet appointment scheduled". First introductions: She likes the chicken! Many headbutts were had. Meet a homeless guy nearby who tells me she's been on the street a while. I get her into the carrier without much trouble: I've already decided on a name. Aphra, after Aphra Marsh from the book Winter Tide by Ruthanna Emrys, which I've been reading. Good fuckin' book. Check it out. Drive to the MSPCA to see if a) she had a microchip (nope!) and b) when I could get her spayed. Meet an older lady with a cat named Grace O'Malley. MSPCA says 8/1 was the earliest, but it's their low-cost spay/neuter program. Texting roommate the whole time, she's like "have you tried the place near us? that's where I take my cat". Call them up, they can get me in the next day but it'll cost almost $300, so no thanks. So we schedule the appointment for 8/1 at the MSPCA and head home. Whole time we're in the car I hear this soft whispery "mahhhh". Sounds like she's wheezing at first but then I realize that she's meowing, but she lost her voice. Check the thread, street doc mentioned that was a thing. Okay, so no change. We head home: She basically doesn't stop purring from the instant she gets out of the carrier. She knows she's home. She wants to be in my lap pretty much always (she is in my lap right now as I am typing this post). We have a couple of false starts with the litter box until I realize she doesn't like the hooded box. Take the hood off and she uses it just fine. Decide to trial a top-entry box instead because I don't like an open litter box in my room. She uses that just fine too. Healthy appetite, eating and drinking, no sign of worms or blood in her poops which are solid and healthy-looking. That first night I'm laying in bed snuggling with her and I feel her belly and it feels, idk... lumpy? Like maybe there might be kittens in there? Nipples feel swollen too. I freak out a little. Call the MSPCA the next morning, they have a cancellation and can get me in on Friday. Discuss it with my mom who says she thinks she's probably close to 6 months old. I agonize over the decision but I ultimately decide that terminating the pregnancy and going ahead with the spay is the most compassionate option, because a) I am not financially or otherwise equipped to deal with a litter of kittens and moving her into a foster situation to raise the kittens would be stressful since she only just found a forever home, b) there are enough cats in the shelter/foster system and on the streets that we don't need to add to that, c) if she is as young as we think, carrying a litter to term might be a health risk for her. So I drive her in Friday morning feeling sick to my stomach but ultimately like I made the right choice, drop her off, go to work and can't stop worrying all day. I pick her up around 3:30. The techs all tell me what a sweetie she was. Not pregnant. Spayed now, microchipped and registered with my information, FIV/FeLV negative (recommended re-test in 6 months), low-grade heart murmur that "might be nothing, but pls follow up with regular vet", one fractured toof. Donations from goons in the Boston thread start coming in to help me out with the costs and I literally burst into tears because I'm so overwhelmed and happy. I have never understood happy crying until this point. She also likes to steal my chair whenever I get up. And her voice is starting to come back, so when she yells at me for food it's now a soft creaky MAAAH instead of a whisper. She bit me today and broke the skin. Even hissed at me. Demeanor instantly changed after I put her down and she started headbutting me and rubbing against me. I think I picked her up wrong and scared her. So now I'm on a week of antibiotics to prevent infection. Even with all that, I have completely fallen in love with this cat. I went out today and got some more treats to see if I can figure out what she likes - turns out it's fish flavored stuff. Ordered her a custom tag. We're both adjusting to our new lives. I had been planning on getting a cat, and Aphra happened to come around at just the right time. I'm as lucky to have her as she is to have me. venus de lmao has a new favorite as of 03:41 on Jul 28, 2019 |
