I liked everything about Awakening (only FE I've played) except managing relationships to make children. I wasn't interested in any subsequent FE's cause I didn't want to manage children. I assumed this game had a children feature but if I read the OP correctly, it doesn't not! I think I'll be trading in Octopath in the very near future to help fund this game.

So, I'm just kind of wondering how exactly you get more attacks up on your enemies in this. Like I get what people have been saying about weight, str/5, don't use Steel weapons etc., and that having +4 Spd over an opponent gives you an extra attack and so forth... but I'm just never really even close to being able to do that even on my speediest characters. The enemy, meanwhile, will gleefully throw 2x attacks and counterattacks at me all day long. Now I'm still winning fights and all so it's not a critical problem or anything, but it makes me feel like I'm not really understanding what I'm supposed to do to make this happen?

Bean posted:I got the game yesterday and I'm enjoying it, even if I'm barely in it. Anyone have any stuff I should know so I don't mess up too badly? I'm not totally new to Fire Emblem but I've only played Awakening. Someone will probably give you a nice list of stuff, but here's a few things that I, also an Awakening-only player, found different or useful: - Hard isn't so bad: take it from me, who only played Normal Casual in Awakening, finished Chapter 4 on Hard Classic without ever coming close to losing a unit. - The game tells you exactly which of your units will be attacked by enemies on their turn (including before you finish moving!) with big arcing red lines, so take advantage of that by luring enemies in with units you know can take a hit. - On a similar note, everyone should have a healing item, and you shouldn't be too shy about keeping you unit's health topped up. - ^^^^^-Double attacks are not just having 5 extra Speed anymore: it's now 4 extra Attack Speed (AS), a derived statistic of (Speed - [Weapon Weight - Strength/5]), and Weapon Weight can't drop below 0. In other words, take your Speed, subtract Weapon Weight, then add 1 for every 5 Strength you have. This makes Steel weapons a dicey proposition for the first few chapters. - You don't get a beefy pre-promote like Frederick to carry your through the early game. However, both the MC and the house lords have excellent bases and growths. Everyone's gonna have a different experience, but my Byleth and Edelgard have a nasty habit of exploding enemies and sucking up experience. - You have a whole ton of different ways of attacking in this game: your units get Combat Arts (weapon-specific special attacks) and Gambits (special moves and spells from a company attached to your unit - a band of mercenaries, some Church priests, etc). Often you'll find that a regular attack is too risky or not powerful enough, but a Combat Art gives enough of a bonus to damage and accuracy to make a clean kill, or a Gambit can push the enemy away and root them to the spot for a turn. Remember that you have options! Harrow posted:I'm not very far yet but I am getting almost exclusively lovely level-ups so far (like maybe once I've seen more than 2 stats go up) and it's making me worry. When you change class, if your unit's stats are low enough, they'll be bumped up to that minimum level (it's different from the regular stat bonuses from the class - you'll see a little level-up screen). Pity StatsTM! Anyway there's plenty of time for everything to even out. My Ferdinand was crap for ages until he got a level that his every stat but Res and it seemed to cross him from a threshold from poo poo to Not poo poo. The average growth total for characters is ~340%, with a few dropping below 300% and Byleth and the Lords at ~370%, so seeing a fair amount of 2-stat levels isn't overly weird. The Commoner and Noble class also don't add anything to growths (ok Noble adds 5% to Charm, who cares). loving annoying, though. Coucho Marx fucked around with this message at 15:51 on Jul 27, 2019 |

Chapter 5 kinda starts to ramp up because they start doing pincer armies, and taking more than 3-4 units for one character is a bit much. Abuse gambits and abilities that limit movement. Locking down multiple enemy units when 6-7 are coming at you is a godsend.

I took one look at the 35 attack, enough AS to double anyone, Counterstrike, AND sitting on a 40% evade tile and noped right out of considering that. I suppose I could have seen if Knightkneeler did enough, but I somehow doubt it. It's theoretically doable I guess, if you've extensively prepared for it, but it's not like the Blue Lions really need an early Dark Seal anyways, what with Mercedes and Annette being your default magic users and neither can use it.

Question for those who "get" what the character building wants: I'm not super screwing myself over by playing around with characters skills a bit am I? This isn't something I need everyone to laser focus on a later class I want them in or whatever?

Started as Blue Lions. Thought I wouldn't like this house that much so I decided to get it out of the way first but I ended up liking most of the characters in it. I also spent ages trying to find a way to get the Dark Seal off Death Knight and then once I got it, after sacrificing a few units (on Casual, it's fine) I find out only male units can be dark mages... Guess I need to poach a guy from one of the other houses.

Yeah, you get gifts and tea ingredients (and more seeds) from the greenhouse. If you're exploring, plant and harvest every time since it doesn't use up an activity point.

golden deer is the land of healers and axe users so many axe users jesus christ that's a lot of axe users Hard seems rough early on imo if only because healing is relatively weak. Lysithea and Marianne have mostly been glued to keeping Hilda and Sylvain upright. I know it gets better later, but I feel like it wasn't pretty much a vulenary in earlier titles. Game is also, uh, rather poorly optimized for what it is. The FPS gets shaky and it has a similar power drain to Breath of the Wild of all things, plus load times obv. It's nothing like super awful or anything, but it is kinda noticeable. I'm surprised - was Warriors in the same boat? Amppelix posted:Isn't that another event? I have run out of those spells before, but so far I've been giving them reason and it's worked out well for when they're out/don't need to heal. I don't know if it's worth putting healing magic on non mages. Maybe Byleth so she can go mortal savant later on? Also might do Lorenz as a holy Knight I guess.
