{Arabiolysis} Chapter 5 - Understanding the Others

After spending literally half the book in the angsty teenage years, Nathen is moving on to his angsty collegiate years. Well - trying to, at least. First Saudi Arabia has to let him go:

Wasn't he just talking about empathy? Whatever. As it turns out that King Abdul-Aziz High didn't have the accreditation needed so Nathan storms out:

Good thing he's not materialistic like the Lebanese. Anyways, Nathen's dad finds him a different high school to rubber stamp his documents and nobody learns any lessons and nothing changes.

Abruptly Nathen drops the fact that he's actually Palestinian? I dunno - something something about never feeling 'at home'. He certainly doesn't feel at home in Saudi Arabia. Have you heard that he doesn't think it's a nice place? If you're not convinced yet, just wait until you read all these cut and pasted facts:

Nathan continues with facts about the Saudi's treatment of women (it's bad) and their treatment of people who have HIV (also bad). He mentions over and over that if you're an expat with HIV they'll deport you back to where you came from and how he sees it as very, very immoral to out someone as being HIV+. He's also very dismissive of Arabs as being a 'bunch of followers':

Nathen takes a few more pot shots at the Middle East and here ends another chapter. Praise Allah.

Up next: Chapter 6: Nathen beds his cousin and then most of Montreal.
Hey Thots, it's your editor. This "Nathen" character you've come up with is too unsympathetic, I don't think anyone will buy it. You should definitely tone him down a bit.

Thanks!

He honestly came across as nice and not too deluded in person, though I only exchanged a couple words with him because it was busy with small children wanting a photo with garfield and I knew I would eventually let slip something about the internet. That niceness might be because he's great at manipulation, I don't know.

They did have him and garfield go up on stage because they were 'gold' sponsors of the festival. The MC didn't really seem to get it. They had an entrance song that included that creepy 'don't leave me' slogan. The word 'entergaging' was uttered by Mazri.

The booth was white and generic so Mazri's orange suit was actually how I identified the booth at the festival, they were pretty far back and the festival was crowded. The woman in the booth serving food didn't really seem too into her job, and failed to tell people there was an app, just telling them about the physical location. I can't blame her.

The crowd was a mix of millennials who Got It, and small children and their parents who were confused as to why garfield was at a middle eastern food festival but glad to have something to entertain their kids anyway.

Just want to highlight that he’s making GBS threads on Arabs for buying international brands instead of coming up with their own in this, the book he wrote before licensing a major international brand instead of coming up with his own.

{Arabiolosis} Chapter Six: Homo Sapiens

quote:

Mazri's Law #6 The evolution of science and technology has turned the Homo sapiens from thinking species into feeling species. Self-reflection, self-awareness, and self-introspection involves thinking. Lead with good thoughts.

I read once about a phenomena where after staring at analog TV static for long enough, people would start to 'see' images in the snow. An optical illusion of a sort. After reading enough Mazri I can almost make out cogent ideas buried in his 'Laws'.

Nathen uncorks a few good stories now and then - we start chapter six off with a doozy:

quote:

I had no sight of female flesh nearby in Riyadh, as my favorite cousin Safa had left to Beirut, where the daemons cleared the battle for my special destined sexual lifestyle to blossom further. It all started with my German cousin without going to second base. The kiss and smell of his neck made my heart beat faster with overexcitement, but I kept my composure, as I always had an ego that played a part of its own, which soon would grow into disaster.

He was shier than I was as I always had to make the first move. My character was always a strong one where I would always make sure I get what I want; because if I didn't, depression and insecurity would be a consequence. I was a risk taker and a source of trouble, the start of any success in the corporate world. He had caramel soft hair showing his attractive German genetics. I always had a thing for soft, lighter hair than mine, as it is thicker and darker. We attract what we aren't!

We used to call each other from our house line and talk as we waited for one another to say: "Come on over, mom left with my siblings to shop at the mall." We also used to plan sleepovers where midnight was the most intense and erotic moment. The beginner feeling of romance swept us away. We didn't know much!

After 3 years of sinful temptation, they left for Germany for good where adversity hit them - a hideous separation struck their parents, and their father marrying for the second time secretly in Tunisia with a baby step-sister they have never met.

All the hot cousin-bangin', dad-abandoning action that audiences crave awww yeah

quote:

I found the search for available men a thrill in Montreal. I was certainly a brave, rebellious, and adventurous, but lost young man. The fire of ambition was there, never died! I turned to men for men chat sites to meet new singles. I went out clubbing every weekend in order to meet a stud and fall in love. I was forever drowned in this lifestyle for four years to come thinking that was the only single path to true love.

MontREALHAWTChat4U: [m4m] ISO Garfield roleplay (Liz ok)

Nathan proceeds to flunk out of college (he glosses over his first year in university in a single sentence, so this is somewhere near his sophomore/junior time frame) right about the same time Mom comes down with breast cancer. Mom's hospital scenes are quite dramatic:

quote:

Dr. Panatschi scowled at the nurses and ordered them to quickly take her upstairs and inject her with three different kinds of antibiotics so that her blood would come back over 8. If not, her life would be threatened. As she looked out the window and saw the light of God shining down on her, she felt a sense of surrender to his will and woke up with good news -- that her blood was now 8.

Mom's 8 bloods win out and she's now cancer free, btw. Good job Mom.

Unfortunately, Nathen's learning some hard lessons about life after getting academically suspended. Things turn dire in the Montreal winter as the heat is cut off juuuuust kidding Nathen's dad brings him back to Saudi Arabia and gives him an executive position:

quote:

I went back to Saudi Arabia for work as I was cajoled by my convincing & religious father to move back with him to Riyadh as it would be more beneficial and financially stable for me. (...) I could also learn on the job as start a career in his IT firm as Marketing Executive, which has forever determined my destiny in branding and earned me an entire career due to one decision I have made which seemed a simple beneficial opportunity.
(...)
The extreme boredom in Riyadh caused me to travel often and spend my inflated salary in London, Beirut, Dubai, & Spain.

The little boy who loved Hot Oprah is all grown up now, I guess.

Nathan cuts and pastes a number of pages worth of information about Beirut (beautiful but troubled), HIV (it's bad), poverty (also bad), and something nonsensical about the fear of death (only bad if you let it be, I think). He winds up the chapter with what I guess is self-introspection?

quote:

I have understood my deepest insecurities and what led me to the devil in disguise. I learned that I had promiscuous behaviour full of fantasies due to suppression. I understood that I wanted to be in the arms of people and be loved due to the inner-void in an oppressed country. I wanted to feel secure, loved, and cared for. I wanted to tell the world "Look at me, I am here, do you see me?" ...oh yes, they did see me...as a sex object.

I feel ya Nathen. The world sees me as a sex object too. It is a heavy cross to bear.

quote:

What is the theme of Chapter 6?
Since Adam & Eve, human beings are self-expressive. Adam & Eve have married their children proven acceptable in a given period of time as norms are relative to time, but not vice versa. Seeking love in different ways is freedom of expression creating unity and a sharing society, rather than a divided nation spreading hatred for future generations to acquire.

Let your faith guide you to your true self.

I have no idea what the theme of Chapter 6 is.

Up next: Chapter Seven: Brand brand brand? Brand, brand-brand brand.
