Even 1980s rubes were no where near as dumb as the wrestlers just automatically assumed they were.

I vaguely remember hearing about a poll in a southern newspaper in either the late 70s or early 80s asking if people still thought wrestling was real and everyone in the Georgia Championship Wrestling locker room expected about 80% to think it was real and then it turned out about 80% knew it was fixed outcomes. Who cares? I'm not expected to stop watching Luther because it's a fictional TV show and no real world polis would get away with doing what he does.

Jim Cornette is dumb and mad because a younger generation no longer view every single thing in wrestling as carnies with absolute contempt for their audience. poo poo is dumb.
The story as I remember it being told was that it was one of the main JCP towns in the early '80s, Ole guessed it would be something like 90%+ thinking it was real "because our work was so realistic," and only something like 1% thought so in the actual poll. So much more damning than you actually remembered it being. NintendoLogic at PWO, though, posted a few weeks ago that he found the actual newspaper and it's not at all as it's been described:

quote:

You guys know how Dave likes to claim that no one during wrestling's heyday thought it was real and cites as evidence a poll conducted in the 80s by the Charlotte Observer that found that only 1 percent of the audience thought it was real? Well, I went into the Charlotte Observer archives, and the real story is quite a bit different. First off, the poll was conducted in 1990. More importantly, while only 1 percent of respondents thought wrestling was "very real," 21 percent thought it was "somewhat real." 72 percent said it was "not at all real" while 6 percent had no answer. The poll's margin of error was plus or minus four points, so that means that even as late as 1990, roughly a quarter of the population of the wrestling hotbed of North Carolina had yet to be smartened up. That's obviously nowhere close to a majority, but I'd be willing to bet that the vast majority of ticket sales came from that sliver of the population. To me, that's pretty clear evidence despite all the protestations to the contrary that wrestling's appeal has historically been rooted in the perception of realism.
John McAdam tells a similar stories involving an annual Busch breweries sports poll including a question like "is pro wrestling real or fake" circa 1989, but I haven't been able to find any clippings about it.

As for the larger conversation:

Yes, Cornette has gotten considerably more mean-spirited and annoying lately and it's gotten really grating. He's less willing than ever to admit getting something wrong or see different points of view. He's increasingly mean spirited and crude when he disagrees with someone. It's stuff that was always there, but they've gotten more pronounced as the more likable elements have been eroding Hell, even stuff like his odd, increasingly frequent insistence on comparing everything to anal rape has gotten uncomfortable to listen to.

Dave didn’t say “everyone knew it was a work”, but he has said the believably was never nearly as protected as people thought.

Re: The newspaper poll asking about realness, it's going to depend on how you define real and how the question is asked. If it's specifically asking about whether outcomes are fixed, that's one thing, but the use of the word real has a lot of room for interpretation. "The outcomes are predetermined, but the action and danger is very real" or whatever is a valid way to describe it.

There are things that a talent may do or say in character that is not indicative of who they are in real life. It is important for the fans to know that and that there are boundaries as well.

I love Corny but he is stuck in 1986 forever. Almost- Pink is playing a character called Pink, we don't know Alicia Moore. Generally celebrities present a marketable facade to the world that they can interact with. We don't get actual Chris Pratt (TBF most glimpses are awful), we get the idea of Chris Pratt the celebrity.

Pro wrestlers could do this..... But it's tiring and hard and generally celebrities hire people to do it for them.

Comparing movie stars and wrestlers doesn't really work because movie stars play SEVERAL different characters across a ton of different films. Whereas, most wrestlers (besides Ed Leslie) usually one use one or two names their entire career. Actors will do tons of media/press using their real name where most wrestlers don't do that.

I'm a bit more sympathetic to NXT Uk than most because they didn't really have anywhere to go locally upwards. The UK scene was exploding but to get above the UK scene your choices were constant trips to Japan, which is exhausting and difficult, constant trips to the US with no surety to long term stability, or ITV which we all know was a disaster. NXT UK was the best game in town when announced and people here were justifiably hyped for it, its just that despite being supposedly cut from the same cloth as NXT its invisible. AEW didn't exist, hell NXT UK predates All In i'm fairly sure, so people being "shouldn't have signed" when it was the best option for a lot of the European scene.

Yeah. I heard a rumor that it was created to give to Toni Storm since she had a stipulation in her contract to be the champion within a certain amount of time. I believe that is how she is able to still work Stardom as well.

Personally I think she will be gone from WWE the moment she can. But it is incredibly interesting how some of the UK talent is under a delusion that WWE is going to magically start treating them like they matter. Osperay and ZSJ are the only two it seems that were smart enough to stay away and have flourished outside of that realm. The NXT UK brand in general seems to be dead along with the careers of everyone involved.

I'm not gonna pretend to have rovert-level access, but afaik at the very least the Welsh contingent of NXT UK is pretty happy just working their normal indie/home promotions and taking WWE's money on top for a couple of safer WWE-style matches a month.

I expect that's true for a lot of them, since I can't think of a time when "former WWE superstar!" has ever hurt anyone's ability to get booked in the bingo halls and leisure centres after they're gone.

Well let's be honest at least half of the NXT UK roster isn't going anywhere. This is the best thing to ever happen to them, an extra 50k a year for the occasional match and they probably see an extra 100-200 quid for indie bookings because of the WWE affiliation.

What is sad are people like Jordan Devlin, Mark Andrews, Wolfgang and Alpha Female who are stuck in an awful situation where they would be heavily in demand elsewhere and have much better careers outside of WWE. Alpha Female's situation just pisses me off since she is 37 and will likely never get a real shot despite being very good and having a great look.

I can't imagine the moral of Seven and Bate would be that great considering they had probably the best matches in WWE in eons and the company just plainly not caring about them. But then again I don't seem to understand the mentality of a lot of people who work there.

It's fine to be happy with your working conditions, that doesn't mean you need to throw a temper tantrum about another promotion giving its workers access to a union and publicising it so that others might feel pressured to follow suit.

It wasn't that long ago that she stumbled pretty hard against Edge. I also think she had an angle against Rousey that she could hit pretty hard but when she doesn't have that it's just name-calling and trying to get Meta, which is never as clever as people think it is.
