Time passes uneventfully. Infiltration is at an all time low.

Woah poo poo it's not that it takes 24 hours to transit to the alien dimension, it's that it takes until the witching hour!
https://i.imgur.com/S1pFMKu.gifv

Holy gently caress that was bad. Real bad. I dunno if our guys are going to be able to make it home. No going back now.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrD05HVGVIQ

woah, the map is big, and gross

I send out Cockler to scout & we find the first pod thing
https://i.imgur.com/5zwWEO1.gifv
So far, so good. I don't know how many of these fuckin things there are tho.

We begin infiltration and don't find any more pods, but we do run into some aliens:
https://i.imgur.com/zq2tDJ5.gifv

We're able to keep them at bay, and also HukHukHuk sets one of the pods on fire while Lurkbeast blasts another one. Worringly, they're using psi against our guys, but we're tough enough that it doesn't do much.
https://i.imgur.com/h6npubF.gifv

I had Ron & Rabbi take a side route, but they were too slow and ran into aliens while exhausted. Also it turns out fire is a great way to take out these pods, just takes a few turns. Gonna start making sure to bring fire missiles too, there may be additional sabotage missions like this one.
https://i.imgur.com/f8tjaH3.gifv

A long cut of some real 3 stooges poo poo where we just throw explosives all over the joint:
https://i.imgur.com/QcNkHLW.gifv

Now this is the real question: The second transport is pretty severely damaged, those guys could easily get shot down. How the gently caress are we going to get them home? Can't call for reinforcements, even if we had them. If I had been less focused on loot I could have put extra chairs in the ships, that way we could just load everyone into the best ship and cross our fingers. Too late now.

There's not too many UFOs right in between us and the escape, but a couple are pretty strong, and every motherfucker on the map is going to come hauling rear end. Welp, gently caress it.

Somehow, some kind of way, we blew up the alien building and survived. Nobody got hurt, but our transports are a loving trainwreck. The only thing left to do is wait for them to come home. Biology begins analysis of the next alien assault zone. In the meantime physics has a breakthru:

Neat. Will be useful for the next time.

robos are currently exhausted, we don't have a perfectly good relationship with the Sentient Engine Liberation Front and no machines are willing to get recruited right now. If you really NEED robotic android lifestyle you will need to wait until an in game day or few pass until some droid decides to quit their job at the bullshit factory. Plus side is if ur android you don't have to worry about getting trained, that poo poo is all firmware these days.

Currently there are a lot of decent humans and mutants ready to kill alien scum, but either way is actually fine -- I don't expect we are going to have any more missions until they drop more aliens, we have the city on lock atm and our guys survived the alien nightmare dimension. This time. So pick the guy you like.

There also nerd slots available but they get like 1 second of action at most and generally look at computer screens all day. P sure several got shot in the abdomen with explosive munitions tho. Basically the same thing as my last job.

literally one more shot would have killed the second ship and 8 of our best and brightest, it was a god drat miracle.

If you're looking at the olds there's not really to much to deal with. IMO TFTD & UFO are essentially the same game except there are a few changes. TFTD is like the palette swap of UFO, it's EXTREMELY similar to the first one, compared to the changes they made for the game we're playin in the thread even. UFO is the root of the franchise and extremely 90s XFiles Area 51 style, TFTD is an evolution of the concept that makes it so you have to fight underwater a lot. It adds a half dimension to combat, where some weapons work underwater and some work on land. TFTD is more difficult due to a bug in UFO where whenever you reloaded a game in UFO it reset to the easiest difficulty -- in TFTD I've heard that the easiest level is harder than the superhuman difficulty of UFO because they didn't know about the bug and just cranked up the difficulty based on feedback.

Dunno if that is really true, but the real bottom line is you should be able to buy all this poo poo for like $5 in some combo pack on steam or gog, and then tool around and find the one that appeals to you. Both TFTD & UFO are global instead of apoc being based around one city. TFTD was more futuristic iirc and had stuff like the EU and African Union compared to the more literally individual countries that happened in UFO

There's also a couple other xcoms that are extremely weird games that break the mold of tactical-strategy and make it fps-strat or fight sim / strat. I haven't played any of those tho.
Also my intro to the franchise was TFTD and imo it's a lot better than UFO. That feels like too easy and imo the graphics and music in TFTD are a lot more intense and cool once you start playing it. Real fan of the atmosphere, it's pretty oppressive & I always thought they did a good job of sucking you in. There's a bug where you can crash the research sequence and make the game unwinnable but I've never personally activated it, even being a dumbass kid.

It's also a decent into hell trying to wrangle the ui of super old games like this, compared to what we have now, but it its what it is.

For the next expedition, is it possible to up-armour the transports somehow? Would giving them more than one anti-missile system each make any difference?

Nope, there are no armor modules. If we could crack the code on shields we could try that but we haven't gotten the ufo wreckage we need

The evasion matrix I think would give extra jamming but only verses missiles, same as the defense turret only shots down missiles apparently

I dunno for sure why our guys didn't shoot at anything on the way in or out but aliens didn't use missiles this time. That's sort of the only thing we can defend against, but it's not exactly a waste. I feel like alien missiles would really gently caress us up

SniperWoreConverse
Mar 20, 2010

Gun Saliva
yes but not that we can build. Next best thing would be probe, it can at least hold a weapon on it but can't carry any mans or equipment. Has the same gun slot as the transport, so anything 2x2 that the transport can equip. We've got an alien gun sitting around but it's not really perfect. Can still load up some plasma or machine gun too.

Angry Diplomat

Are the probes unmanned? How long would it take to build an ungodly swarm of them so we can unleash a violently distracting cloud of hornets to take the heat off our surgical strike teams during the next incursion?

SniperWoreConverse
Mar 20, 2010

Gun Saliva
probes are unmanned. Best case scenario we could put out one per day per huge workshop but it's unlikely that we'll have max brainiac engineers. Right now we only have the 1 big shop. It prob takes like 1 or 2 days or something to research each mission, but it will take longer to repair our ships cause they're turbo hosed. I guess we could just cram everybody into the new ship

HBar
Sep 13, 2007

It's 37000 skill hours for a probe+light beam, vs 47000 for a biotrans+light beam. And the biotrans can tank a huge amount of damage while the probe can't. They can use vehicle equipment, serve as backup agent transports, and have better resale value if we outgrow the need for them. So it makes more sense to mass produce bio-transports instead.

On the other hand, one advantage of probes is that they're small and a little harder to hit. So if the aliens keep missing them and hitting buildings instead, it might make more orgs hostile to aliens and friendly to xcom. But bio-transports are still the better deal overall.
