i like animation and i like japanese animation. i like the shows written and directed by cool ladies. i like the shows about Waver being a magic detective. i think its cool that as a gay woman there are more and more shows about gay woman i can watch in anime lately.

performative hatred for things is weird to me, especially when a lot of it comes from genre fiction fans who are criticizing other genre fiction for the same problems that are prevalent in things they like oftentimes. its kinda a boring take in my opinion.

Oh I can play this game.
Low art vs high art arguments are dumb. Personally I believe people should take in a variety of media from all types of sources and try new things, (they don't really have to force themselves to keep on engaging with a type of media that does nothing for them of course).

Anyway "go read real lit" types who say stuff like this in response to conversations about problems with genre fiction are ignoring how much of real lit is also full of creepy stuff written by smarmy white guys about other swarmy white guys wondering if their art really matters or something while they infantlize women.

Eh plenty of genre writers take influence from a ton of stuff outside of their genre. Like yeah a lot of it is by the numbers, but even like people who try to write "real literature" are often by the numbers as well.

Like there is a difference between like an art house film and like uh, terminator 2, but both are like valid forms of doing stuff. Art isn't like some smash brothers tier and most of the ideas about low stuff can be applied to the high stuff and vice versa.

"high art" "real literature" in a lot of ways are just kinda like patriarchal constructs to let people stuff themselves up. its sorta a fetishization of the artistic process, that these subset of people and the people who read/take in this subset have a greater appreciation of the process. Honestly its just a higher level of like stand up comedians who forget to tell jokes and give interviews where htey talk about how the comedian's sacred job is to hold a lens of society, or the whole method acting thing which is just male actors trying to "masculinized" their craft some more. its all "process" porn/fetishization

How is white phosphorus being in a military shooter any more offensive than every other weapon that's already been in it? Bullets and bombs have killed more people than white phosphorus by a country mile. I don't get the sudden outrage.

WP is a very controversial weapon of war; it's intended, legal use is for obscuring smoke screens and illumination. Classified as a chemical weapon, deliberately using it against personnel is a Geneva violation (among other treaties regarding chem/incendiary stuff).

Unfortunately, recent conflicts still see reports of WP being used to directly attack targets, with offending parties denying their use. Combined with WP's excellent properties for causing tremendous suffering (turns out elemental phosphorus is really bad for your bones) makes WP a real WTF decision for games that aren't A: Pure Mil-sim (ARMA), or B: Making a point with it (Spec-Ops).

But hey, maybe Activision is going to use their billion-dollar franchise to highlight humanitarian issues in war with their multiplayer killstreak bonuses, and have every round end with the top scoring players being tried at the Hauge.

yeah nothing wrong with that.

sorta related, but like its funny to me how you see these attitudes within even genre fiction stuff. like scifi fans act like their preferred genre is greater and about bigger ideas than fantasy, but then like cyberpunk fans are that... but even more so because they treat normal scifi the same lol.

I enjoy reading all kinds of books, from stories that are probably considered more classically "real" or "higher" literature to stuff that is about a fat orange cat who eats a lot of food that cats should not eat while his owner fails to solve a murder mystery

Yeah but you don't have real-world nations doing real-world warcrimes with nuclear weapons to make things uncomfortable. WP's presence in media as something you kill bad guys with normalizes it to your audience, making restrictions on its use in real life ever so harder to enforce.

fiction set in the real world is boring as poo poo compared to non-fiction, which is why I just read non-fiction instead. Almost all the fiction I consume is in the form of video games

e: specifically history is way more interesting than non-genre fiction so I just read history books instead

my post was half sincere (as in I honestly do not care for non-genre fiction) and half shitpost (I wanted to one-up the "read a real book" crowd with non-fiction)

To me, learning about stuff is where the real fun is in reading. In fantasy, the stuff you're learning isn't "real" but it's still learning about the constructed world. And of course, non-fiction scratches that itch even better, so that's what I read.

I don't like literature discussions because it seems like a contest to see who is the most snob, but this is a good way of putting lovely advice in a nicer light.

Just the concept of "genre lit" is ridiculous to me.
