Never forget that Verhofstadt earn way, way more for consulting with a weird Luxembourg banking group and a mining company than he does with his (drat good) MEP salary.

Tesseraction posted:Perhaps a German speaker in here can help me out with an idle curiosity. I was using the term bean counter earlier and worried it might have a US-racial connotation (see: "beaners" as a racist term for Mexicans) so I looked it up. Thankfully it's nothing of the sort, but the English usage apparently only appears in the 20th century, whereas the German term Erbsenzähler is easily traced back to the late 1600s. However my German is rusty as poo poo so I'm struggling to successfully find an etymology for it, most of the German sources I find suggest it's a reference to Mendel's contribution to genetics via documenting peas, but that wouldn't explain the 1668 usage with the modern pejorative streak. Any Teutons got any idea? After a bit of googling it seems the original meaning(from the Simplicissimus) was that of a extremely stingy/miserly person. As in someone that even counted the peas their family and workers got to eat. That's not explicitly mentioned, but it fits the serving half rotten food/boiling the last bit of fat out of the already gnawed and licked clean bones, etc. In the part where he is called Erbsenzähler, he left some tripe by the open window, the hungry kids stole it, wolfed it down only halfway boiled and blamed the cat. Erbsenzähler weighed the cat and found that it was, including bones and fur, lighter than the tripe he was missing, which is probably where the more modern meaning of a pedantic person comes from.

You could start with Reform or Revolution which specifically addresses the Bernstein reformist/sucdem point of view. The gist is Luxemburg was a revolutionary and Bernstein was very much not, and history has proven how utterly impossible it would be to achieve genuine socialism through the ballot box alone and from a position of gradual reform.

Do you really believe that falling out of the customs union would be irrelevant, especially now with the German economy in the doldrums? If the worst case projections are true and the UK really does lose like 7% of GDP in the immediate aftermath of a no deal Brexit it seems very likely the rest of Europe is going to fall into recession too
