Drone_Fragger posted:I'm not really a big fan of guns, but honestly the one of maybe like 5 times you should have them is when you're in an area where there is a piece of native wildlife which will attack and kill a human. That's like the only time you should be drawing a gun and shooting something, preferably repeatedly. But also: stop it bear. A friend of my family moved to Alaska for a year. He wasn't a gun person. After his first hike in the bush, he saw a big rear end grizzly and it saw him. He realized that he was part of the food chain and not at the top. He carried a rifle on his walks after that. Never needed to use it but better safe than sorry.

I GIS'd the address and found an old pic of this house before it became somebody's sick project. You can see the tree it was built around in that pic lol

Also relevant for me at the moment since the group I work with is looking into the possibility of doing some work up in the arctic where getting stranded and meeting a hungry polar bear is within the realm of possibility. "Would the contract budget cover firearms" is a question that is legitimately coming up https://www.wideopenspaces.com/10-best-bear-defense-guns-pics/

Cyka blyat OSHA related: I remembered some poo poo from old job. The company expected floor personnel to move tugger carts by hand. They were never intended for this, and almost all were broken in a way that made you exert even more force than was safe. Not that the non-broken ones were any better. We brought it up multiple times to hr/safety and it never went anywhere. The doctors and nurses that would visit the plant would bring it up to them as well, and tell us to keep reporting it. Osha would show up, and magically nothing would happen. (the magic being money changing hands or some other clout bullshit) I'm happy to not be there anymore and never have to go back, but I have friends there still and they say nothing has changed for the positive. This is a global company that has the means to fix things, but never will.

Re: bear chat. Guy at the gun club I go to works for the federal Government (Canada), and he, and people in his department do work in the arctic on a regular basis. One or the job requirements is to have a firearms license, because up there they need to carry when they're going about their work because polar bears don't give a gently caress and will kill you just for looking at them the wrong way. Then, they'll probably eat you too, just for the hell of it.

tater_salad posted:It would be nice if planes had parachutes that's all I'm gunna say. Not only do they make airplanes with parachutes, but some airplanes are designed so that with the engine shut down they naturally descend no faster than they would in a parachute landing. The guy in that video may have even made out better than if he'd had an airframe parachute because he was able to pick a nice clean flat road to land on. They might even be able to fix the problem and fly the plane right back out
