Europe collectively decided that the place for refugees is on the bottom of the Mediterranean or inside a Libyan death camp, there's no need to sling mud here.

Anyway, that specific homeless policy was instated over ten years ago.

almost lost some friends because we got in such a huge fight about me calling their dad a racist piece of poo poo for claiming that "all black homeless" work together and "get welfare, food stamps, and free houses, and beg two hours a day to afford an escalade". its astonishingly ubiquitous despite being transparently stupid

in the case of the person in question, he's just a dude who is so uncritically immersed in one of the worst parts of American labor culture that he's inadvertently internalized some of the worst parts of the discourse. he's a good buddy who's a petit-bourgeois contractor, in that his dad owns a high-end house renovation business and while they technically do the work personally, they also hire hands sometimes and only do really expensive work on older houses. he's going to inherit the business and makes probably two times what he would be just as a regular contractor with no formal education.

dude isn't even a chud and neither is his dad. they're both lifelong democrats and generic libs who hate trump and smoke unbelievable quantities of weed, but their whiteness and prosperity resulting from the business has given them brainworms about how hard other people work.

we once got in another fight because he and his wife kept insisting that people get disability for just being super fat and lazy, which is unfair because disability is so much money! this was literally a result of talking about how his wife's parents, after decades of poverty, being uninsured, and just poor decisions without a financial cushion, had to apply for disability and medicaid to not die. like despite having this concrete example of people in desperate need in his personal life, when he thinks of welfare, he only thinks of some vague acquaintance he is sure gets welfare for his fatness and no other reason.

it's very discouraging because these are the kind of people who are about as progressive as its possible to be in the american context but that context is so poisoned by decades of neoliberal propaganda surrounding the value of "hard work" they simply cannot wrap their minds around the basic tenets of humane economics.

Oh speaking of people who aren't chuds, I just got back from vacation last week and part of that was visiting my relatives. My uncle in particular was fun to interact with - he's basically a traditional northern-state conservative, in that he's for low taxes and small government but on social issues he's completely fine, thinks gays are ok, didn't even misgender my trans wife or anything, and he's pretty OK with unions because the teacher's union got him a pretty sweet retirement plan that he recognizes isn't really A Thing for most people. Anyway I think Trump has completely broken his brain. He hates Trump and everything Trump stands for, yet Trump represents basically everything that was just under the surface of the conservatism he's supported for his whole life, and it's clearly tearing him apart at the seams. Like my mom got talking to him about socialism (cuz she's a good ol' rabble-rousing socialist), and he just couldn't stomach the term, but when she phrased it in different words and mentioned Trump didn't like it he was totally for it.

My favorite part was when we got talking about how New York state (where he lives) was giving absurd tax breaks to companies to move to the state, like 10 years with no state taxes on top of all the incentives they're definitely already getting from the state and cities and counties. Someone mentioned the goal was to "create jobs" and he almost immediately went "well that's good! create jobs, lower taxes!" etc. and then I mentioned that as a result the cities in the region were clearly facing budget shortfalls and unable to cover basic infrastructure upgrades and maintenance and he immediately flipped to "that's bad! i'll have to pay for that from my taxes instead I bet! they should pay fair taxes!" and as the conversation went on he kept rapidly oscillating back and forth between "taxes bad, praise be to the job creators" and "wait everything around where I live is falling apart and the city needs money to fix it and stuff still needs to get paid for, if they don't pay taxes then I bet I'll have to pay higher taxes! Taxes good, tax those drat corporations and the rich!"

I'm not sure if he'll ever wind up figuring out or admitting that he's actually a pro-labor socialist but at least it was fun to watch :allears:

What I find funny is that people are disgusted at the idea of pan handling even though the guy in this example would have to work literally every day for an entire year to make that amount, which most people would consider unreasonable work hours. Also that a homeless person who drinks is some kind of failure even if they pay for the alcohol with legal tender.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars stolen, criminals confess, no one prosecuted

quote:

...a King County Superior Court judge approved a settlement between the corporate owners of Sodo’s Pyramid Alehouse and employees who said the company had been stealing their wages for four years. The company is now paying out $450,000.

...

Employees claimed that the company repeatedly failed to give employees required breaks, deleted hours off their timesheets, failed to pay overtime, and collected tips that were supposed to be paid to the employees. Brian Drew, a former bartender at Pyramid and one of the employees named in the original lawsuit filed in April of last year, said that the restaurant industry needs a culture change.

So, that bartender will probably never be able to get a job again now that his name is attached to that lawsuit. And somehow this appears in the newspaper, yet no one has been arrested; it's very strange.
