I did all of that like crazy and the only thing I ever got when I talked to her for months was the option to ask her for tea.

Like, I sat at C into ‘this bond will take time to develop’ B for months, and it wouldn’t give me the option to give her gifts or even get her as a temporary party member until after the spoiler.

Are you sure it wasn't saying you have to wait for her to talk to you (ie: fast travel while exploring then go to wherever the talk icon appears)? Because her C/B-Supports have nothing to do with the story at all and I am definitely sure I recruited her before the spoiler.

Positive. I recruited every other girl in the game by the middle of pre-timeskip, so I spent all the rest of the time choir/tea/meal sharing with Hilda to no effect up until near to the very last map when she just up and asked to join, then I got FINALLY got her B Support sometime after the timeskip.

I assumed it had to do with not being able to have her on Edelgard’s route but who knows? I’ll try again in NG+ with max professor rank and see what happens.

What other stuff can a dancer do? Can they cast spells or just swing weapons? I thought making Byleth a thief would retain her spells from classes but it wasn't the case, so if I make Mercedes a dancer I want her to be able to heal as well.

as far as i can tell there are some poached units that don't rejoin immediately, you need to get to the chapter where they appear as an enemy and you'll get the option to recruit them after you beat them, assuming your support level is high enough. i assume it's route based, since i kept lysithea while other people are saying they had to fight her.

That's definitely an edge for Edelgard.

Everybody was at the monastery waiting the second Byleth got back. Not even one mission apart.

I guess it's true what they say. Once you commit high treason for someone, you're pretty much committed. Or, to quote Milton, "Devil with devil damned firm concord holds."

Finally got around to beating Felix's paralogue. I'm still not convinced it actually is possible to save all the villagers, specifically the one that starts by the exit and makes a run for it only to get incinerated by the mage blocking it. As cool as the reward for doing so sounds, I'll just have to do without it...

I have Mercedes, but I don't think Physic would have saved this particular guy (because between the mage and another guy right there with a sword, he would die in one turn) unless I spammed Stride to get a bunch of my units to the exit and clear it out before the villager got there.

Yeah, I struggled with using gambits and dodging a counter with Byleth before coming in for the kill with Edelgard my first time though.

Then oneshot with Lysithea second time.

And then Sylvain with his busted lance the third time.

4th time through I'm just going to buy Hubert his A-rank and Dark Spikes him again.

About this, can they be beaten by any unit in order to persuade them, or does it have to be Byleth?

I also don't think it has to do with support level per se so much as if you managed to poach them initially. At least that's what I hope

Hubert already learns nothing but Dark Magic spells. The only spell the Dark Mage classline gives you is Miasma Δ, which is a spell Hubert already learns from leveling up Reason. And neither Dark Mage nor Dark Bishop teach Dark Magic Uses x2, that's an ability only Gremory has, and Gremory is female-exclusive. Dark Tomefaire comes from the Dark Knight class, which you don't need a Dark Seal for.

No, none of this makes any sense.

Thanks for the answers earlier. I know it's not hard to recruit people if you focus on their support, but for this run I think I'll focus on Dorothea to nab her for the dance, and then Ingrid and Felix in that order since I'm already thinking my Byleth is leaning in a similar direction to the latter.
